Sci-Fi Dune

I've thought about this myself. Not just for Dune but other big blockbusters on the horizon. Like how if the strike goes on for months I can absolutely see Disney/Marvel pushing The Marvels back to May even if it's 100% finished because there's no way that Deadpool 3 would be able to make that date.

Would give Marvels a lot more breathing room as well. November is too packed at the moment.

'Dune 2' Release Date May Shift to 2024 As Labor Strikes Rage On - Variety

I know I wanted this moved away from The Marvels, but pushed up.

Seriously I wouldn't be shocked if this happens if the strike goes through the fall. I just assumed they'd have gone through with Dune 2 and moved their holiday release slate instead.

I wonder if part of the move is because there’s still some slight additions and touches for post-production needed for the film, like ADR and the like, that can’t be done without the actors currently on strike.

Having said that, they wouldn’t have to do this if the people up top just acquiesced to the demands of the actors/writers in the first place. Of course, as the past couple months have shown, greed makes these Hollywood executives, who have never lifted much of a finger or have done any actual hard labor in their entire lives, do really stupid things to ensure their own survival and security. They’d rather burn through millions or cut off and eat their own limbs before humbly admitting to being wrong and admitting defeat. If and when they fall, it’ll be because of their own doing.

They’re quite literally the embodiment of this:

Either way, it f**king sucks.

it’s about the promotion. The filming is done. They have a star studded cast, but there won’t be anyone on a premiere to promote the movie

Finally got round to seeing this and liked a lot of it, can see why it has a lot of love here. Really impressive visually and can only imagine how incredible it would have looked on a big screen. Rebecca Ferguson and Timothee Chalamet were really good in this and held it all together really well. Some characters didnt get a great deal of screen time to really develop before they were offed but they served the story well enough being told.

I still think Sicario and Bladerunner 2049 are my fave Villeneuve movies but this still was a very impressive slice of slow burn of a sci-fi movie, he just "gets" this genre like so many dont.

Dune really was transcendental on the big screen. I saw it three times and I would've gone again if movie tickets weren't so expensive. It's a special experience, getting completely enveloped by that world. The sound design, the score, the visuals... I can't wait to experience it again with Part 2.

It feels unbelievable that the budget was only 165 million. The value Villeneuve brings with that money feels twice as much.

Yeah the sound design as well was incredible, even without the wonders of Dolby surround sound the sounds of the desert and vehicles were really enhanced by another great score similar to BR.

Just goes to show that money is not the most important thing but how you spend it is.

Assuming the delay doesn't occur, Dune is getting an exclusive 6 week IMAX window, so no worries about losing screens to The Marvels.

Has The Marvels moved already?
The Marvels was moved to November a few months ago after it was originally supposed to be released today. Dune Part Two is supposed to be out a week before The Marvels and if it isn't delayed due to the strikes, then there won't be any IMAX shows for The Marvels.

What's not great for its box office potential is its current release date. They really need to move it up a couple weeks so it has some breathing room before The Marvels takes all the IMAX/premium screens.

IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond thinks Dune: Part Two won't be delayed due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. The actors' strike prevents movie stars from promoting new movies, so studios are delaying films until they can be properly marketed. Gelfond believes Warner Bros. will hold onto Dune: Part Two's release date, however, because there's no other competition for IMAX screens from other movies for six weeks. He explained, "If you put it back in the gate, you've got to duplicate those expenses at some time in the future of putting it out of the gate. In addition, Dune has a very long run time in IMAX, up to five or six weeks."

Dune: Part Two has practically no competition in its first week, and even though The Marvels will be released the following week, the MCU has been inconsistent as of late, and they have mostly underperformed at the box office. The Marvels won't even occupy any IMAX screens either, which makes the Marvel Studios movie even less of a threat.

To be honest, I don’t think the promotion of the actors for Dune Part II or The Marvels is really going to move the needle one way or another, so I can’t see the studios caring to move either. The titles and trailers sell themselves.

They’re delaying a lot of the original lower budget fare because some of those rely entirely on the promotion of the actors they have.

That was before I knew The Marvels wasn't being released in IMAX (at least not if Dune 2 isn't delayed) but there's still this to consider:

Yeah, honestly I think we are just in a holding pattern currently.

‘Dune: Part Two’ Eyes Possible Spring Date, ‘Drive-Away Dolls’ To Delay: Box Office – Deadline
As of today, Dune: Part Two is not moving, but if Zendaya with her 200 million social media followers can turn Challengers into a counterprogramming success, she can certainly help in trumpeting the feature take of the Frank Herbert novel. Of course, it stands to reason that Villeneuve and Legendary are going to wait this sci-fi spectacle out; why would they allow it to become distribution collateral damage again?

I hear Legendary, which is in the pilot’s seat here on the pic’s fate, is in wait-and-see mode and has until September before Dune 2‘s next leg of marketing has to go.

If Dune: Part Two moves, where does it go? I hear there are three spring options, and you just have to look at the release calendar: March, April or a break in the summer connected to a possible Cannes Film Festival launch. Warners already has the following dates on hold in regards to where Dune: Part Two could go: March 15, where Legendary has its next Godzilla/King Kong movie; April 19, which they have on reserve for an event title; or June 21, an untitled open slot for the Burbank lot.

But again, if the AMPTP and SAG-AFTRA see eye-to-eye by Labor Day weekend, Dune: Part Two could stay exactly where it is on the calendar.

My biggest fear is that they will want to keep it near awards season and push it back a year.

If Sony is already delaying their slate to next year then I don't expect any big releases from the other studios to come out in 2023 either. Marvels, Dune and Aquaman all going into 2024.

Jesus, they're going to **** its box office potential for a second time in a row, aren't they? Either it stays where it is and loses a lot of money from the lack of marketing by its humongous cast or they move it at a later date with too much competition going on, like this summer or October 2021, and after a long while were interest might diminish a bit by not striking while the iron is hot and the hype at its strongest. I can't even, with these idiot CEOs who are shooting themselves in the foot due to greediness.
