The voice cast from the first -- Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone, Ryan Reynolds, Clark Duke and Catherine Keener -- are returning for the sequel. Kirk DiMicco and Chris Sanders are return to co-write and direct.

It was announced that Leslie Mann (This is 40) and Kat Dennings ("Two Broke Girls") have joined the film, which is currently slated for a December 22, 2017 release.

The Cars franchise is a vanity project for John Lasseter, and he's CCO of Pixar, Disney Animation, and DisneyToon Studios. Kirk DiMicco & Chris Sanders had no such luxury at DWA.

If Cars 3 does well, he's likely going to do more sequels.

Cars is also a merchandising behemoth.

Croods isn't even in the same solar system in that regard.

Yeah, as crazy as it sounds, Cars makes a lot in merch sales. Little ones love those toys.

That's one of the biggest differences between Disney/Pixar and Dreamworks. None of the Dreamworks Animation properties have been big merchandising behemoths outside of Shrek and maybe How to Train Your Dragon.

What's funny is that TheCroods was a surprise hit that made almost $600m WW (how many non Disney, non sequel animated movies do that well?) yet the cancel the sequel and greenlight dreck like Boss Baby.
I will be shocked if Boss Baby does more than half what The Croods did WW.

One Dreamworks movie I will check out and I hope is a hit is Captain Underpants. I got a kick out of those books when I was a kid.

Croods shouldn't really get a sequel. It's better on its own.

It's baa-aack!

Considering how much money the original made I was very surprised the sequel was cancelled, but it has been resurrected.
I wonder if the original had a sequel clause written into the actors contracts?
I'm sure both Emma and Ryan would both be more expensive now if they didn't, and that's assuming they would even agree to do it after all this time has passed.

Not sure it's a good idea, but we shall see. Universal wanted franchises when it bought DreamWorks Animation, but not sure this is the best sequel choice. What about Dragons 3? The second one didn't do as well as the first, but it still made over $175 million US and over $644 million worldwide, which was more than the worldwide take of Croods. It also got really good reviews. Better reviews overall than The Croods, plus a way more popular TV spinoff.

How to Train Your Dragon 3 is still set to be released March 1 2019 I believe.
Croods and HTTYD2 put up very similar numbers with very similar budgets.
Croods being a hit was pretty much a complete surprise while Dragon 2 was expected to do a bit better than it did being a sequel to a very well received first installment.

Croods:

Domestic $187.2m
Overseas $400m
Total $587.2m

Budget $135m

HTTYD2:

Domestic $177m
Overseas $444.5m
Total $621.5m

Budget $145m

Croods only did marginally better domestically. Negligible amount. I would say Dragon 2 is seen as the superior film among most viewers.

That said, I'm glad Dragons is getting a third movie and I hope they end it on a high, if likely a somber note.

Very happy to hear this is back on was disappointed when it got shelved.

Can't see why this needs a sequel. I thought the story was pretty much over.

Universal paid $4 billion for DreamWorks Animation, so they want return on that investment. The Croods wasn't a huge hit, but it made over $180 domestic and over $587 million worldwide. So, I guess a sequel to Croods makes more sense than say... Turbo 2 ;)

LOL, who has time for The Croods when most of the movies from 2020 still have yet to be released? Unless they go VOD like they did with Trolls 2, this ain't coming out Thanksgiving.

They’re really banking on Pixar moving Soul from that Thanksgiving spot.

Good trailer, im excited to see it.
