E3 2009

That motion sensor thing for PS3 was amazing.

How was it amazing, it's the Wii-mote, we've seen it. No innovation in the product. Oh wait, it's got some 3-D capabilities, isn't that what motion-plus is for?

microsoft wins e3 for me:

microsoft: B
sony: C+
nintendo: D

I pretty much agree, although I might give Microsoft a B+ and Sony a B-.

The only thing I found odd about Microsoft's conference was the focus on Rock Band Beatles since it's multiplatform, one exclusive song doesn't deserve the treatment Microsoft gave it, that are the Tony Hawk game, when Project Natal's skateboarding was a lot cooler.

Sony shouldn't have spent so much time on PSP in my opinion, at one point I thought they wouldn't get back to the PS3.

Nintendo sucked big time, the only thing I cared about was the last 5-10 minutes. Everything else was basically Nintendo giving the finger to the core gaming audience.

it would be perfect for me if square announced a remake of FF7, it's not gonna happen but i can hope :(

I think all three of them had pretty solid B to B minus shows. All of them seemed to bring their A game with some slight hiccups.

I can see the lesser score you guys give Nintendo considering the majority of you guys dislike Nintendo.

I can only speak for myself, but I don't dislike Nintendo.:whatever:

And even if I did, I certainly wouldn't let my personal opinion of them override whether or not I thought they gave a good presser.

They did better than last year, I'll give them that, but their press conference was still very bland and they only showed two games that I have any interest in; Golden Sun DS and New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Microsoft and Sony on the other hand were both more entertaining and showed many many many more games that I'm into. Thus, my scores.

The PS3Motion thing blew my mind. As did Natal. And here's why;

Natal is essentially the "first" step in artificial intelligence. That boy that was being talked to on the demo was responding in real time to what the "player" was saying. That's amazing on it's own, but add that it's literally a full, free-ranged motion sensor and you start opening new doors. Only downside is that it appears to not have a "focus point", which is going to mean ******edly big "hit boxes", or too way to small. It's the next step towards virtual reality, afterall. However, I don't see it being any more popular than the PS2's EyeToy, until the next system where it's already integrated in and such.

And then, theres the PS3Motion. If you watched the demo of this and wern't blown away, then you simply can't grasp what's happening. A few things off the top of my head that impressed me about it;

1:1 ratio. Seemless between presenter and presentation. Full range (like the Natal), however WITH a focus point, for pinpoint accuracy. I mean, the dude had to grab an arrow, knock it, pull and fire, as opposed to the Wii where it's just click A 4 or 5 times, then aim and fire with the Wiimote. The PS3M was like actually holding the bow, or sword/shield, or whatever else the presenter was holding. And that light that he picked up and cast dynamic lighting was absolutely amazing.

But, again, I can see where some people will just see it as a "wiimote" for the PS3, adding nothing but wagglan gimmicks.

Guess I'll rate.

Sony - B+
Microsoft - C+
Nintendo D-

Nintendo was better than last year, but that's not saying much. Metroid alone couldn't save their conference IMO.

Microsoft, a multiplat shocker just isn't going to win E3 for them to me. FFXIII and MG:Rising seemed more like a "In your face Sony!" rather than a "Buy our console, here's this awesome game you can only get here!" deal. However, it was an above average, show. Alan Wake wow'd, as did SC. Even tho it's a timed multiplat, MW2 also looked great.

Sony was just really solid again. No megaton like they said, but some good shockers nonetheless. FFXIV, The Last Guardian, Agent, Mod Racers, MGS:PW, GT, RE, and AC for PSP, and a few others, all new titles. Playable footage of GOW3, and especially Uncharted 2 just floored me. Plus they announced AC2 having connective features with the new PSP AC game.

Tho I think if you're a 360 or PS3 owner you won this E3. Both stepped their games up, both put on a good show. This was a better E3 than last year.

Two Mario games and Golden Sun? Come on now, Metroid was the best reveal, but they did have more fairly big reveals there.

Also, I'm guessing Sony's megaton announcement was FFXIV as a PS3-exclusive (his words, though it's doubtful it would have stuck). And it would have been a megaton one for sure...if it didn't end up being another online FF. If it had been a real deal next installment as an "exclusive" it would have been a huge thing for Sony

I was very disapointed with the "Sonymote".
I already knew i would be, but even so.
So, basically, what Sony did was to replace the sensor bar with the Playstation Eye for a more 1:1 experience, and replaced the Wiimote and Nunchuck with two Sonymotes.
So, besides the more 1:1 experience, they basically created the Wii...on the PS3.

At least Microsoft brought innovation on the all motion control and made it their own product

I really hope they never make a FF7 remake. They'd probably angst it up, take out all the fun yet lighter or humorous parts of the game (Like the Honeybee Inn) and retcon the hell out of it to add that Gackt guy and other ****** ideas the spin-offs brought.

I do wonder tho, now with all 3 having major motion control schemes if 3rd parties will start making multiplat motion sensing games. More or less the Natal, PS3 Motion deal, and Wii+ remote will all give a nice full range of motion. Even tho Natal lacks controllers, I could still see motion being added to both in bigger games in small ways.

Like in Uncharted, to turn a valve to open an air tight sealed door you had to spin your PS3 controller. I could see the Dualshock, or PS3 motion deal being used for that, and at the same time Natal allowing you to do the same motion with your hands. Not that it's a huge deal, but now that they all have the capability and it's a hot thing (atleast to mainstream) maybe more developers will add it in to bigger titles.

You didn´t watched the Nintendo presentation, did you?
Because in Resort, you have a bow and arrow, EXACTLY like what Sony showed.
And full range......you have two remotes, the wiimote and the nunchuck...errr..i mean, the sonymote A and sonymote B.
The only thing you have better than the Wii is the 1:1, but, for all i know, what´s the reason Wii Motion Plus was made.

Microsoft's Natal is just Playstation 2's "Eye Toy" if the PS3M is just Wii with 1:1.

Seriously, the Wii isn't really even a true motion sensor experience like they said. It's a complete gimmick and everyone knows it. However, the PS3M's abilities are far surpassing the Wii's standard Wiimote, and anyone who can't see this just doesn't understand. Give it a year and when you see a game like Demon Souls using exclusively the PS3Motion capabilities you'll **** your pants.

Exact quote from conference said:
Proud to announce that Final Fantasy 14 will be a Playstation 3 exclusive at launch.

That means it'll be on PS3 at launch of it then branch out later.

games are meant to be played with joysticks or controllers....these motion sensing peripherals are toys, pure and simple....

That means it'll be on PS3 at launch of it then branch out later.

Ah, my bad then. I must've misheard. That still would have been a big announcement if had been a 'real' sequel.

IMO, the highlight of Sony´s presentation was the Modnation racer...i liked i a lot.
That´s the one thing that Sony is doing very right and be different than all the others, to focus on player creation (this and LBP).

Then again, i bet that Rare or Molyneux will make that sooner or later too.
But create a game where you can go about all genres, not just focus on platform games (LBP) or racing (Modnation).

nothing for psp wowed me since it was either franchises i am not familiar with/care for or remakes. the gameplay for ACII and UCII was great. GOWII looked cool with the brutality of it and modracing was looked fun. also, the last guardian looked really beautiful i could care less for anything else sony showed.

bungie needs to get off halo's nuts and make some more new and original games. conviction was friggin sweet and pretty innovative imo. alan wake definately delivered, especially given the fact that it was all but a forgotten memory by most. fans of FF and MGS should be extremely happy now. NATAL was the big gun this year. like it or not, this technology is going to lead the way to a new way to gaming. excluding the wii **** microsoft is trying to do, the fact that you can go as far as to scan item and vocally command the ai was awesome.

nintendo sucked balls; sweaty, duckbutter balls. aside from metroid this gets two big thumbs down.

Part of it is that I'm just not feeling Nintendo atm. I bought a Gamecube last gen, but this gen Nintendo just isn't doing it for me. All of their releases are running together for me. This may sound harsh, and I do love Zelda, but I'm just tired of seeing the same franchises repackaged over and over, or repackaged gimmick waggle games.

The new Super Mario Brothers was just multiplayer Mario Bros. 1 to me (which I've played to death). I'm sure it'll be fun, but like $5 from the virtual store/Live/PSN and play for a week then forget about it fun (Like half the PSN games I bought lol). I never was interested in Mario Galaxy so 2 didn't appeal to me. Golden Sun I agree with and forgot about, I have 2 for GBA SP and still love it.

The rest of the conference was just boring to me, and even Metroid and Golden Sun couldn't counterbalance the rest of the show.

The "New Super Marios Brothers" is just the DS game with multiplayer ported to the Wii, ya know.

I liked it to. Especially since the track creation was so easy.

I'm glad this genre is making a come back. RPG Maker was letting you create the game, and release it to others on PC years ago. I loved, LOVED RPG Maker, in fact I have RPG Maker 3 for the PS2 on my shelf still. They still release one every now and then, but it never REALLY took off.

So my hope is that with LBP taking off, and Mod Racing now, hopefully it'll help RPG Maker get a new, big console release again, and do well.

RPG Makers took off over in Japan when it was first around, and was pretty big around 2000, but the internet just wasn't ready for it.

If it was released now as something new I bet it would be huge. Back when it was "popular" there wern't easy ways for anyone to just make an entire website dedicated to housing the hundreds upon thousands of animations, spells, backgrounds, sprites and tile sets that the average RPG game should take. You'd be luck to find a site with a list of other sites for games currently being made, and of them maybe 2 or 3 would be full releases, with the rest just having ****** little "tech" demos.

But damn if this Mod Racer game doesn't look awesome. That track creation just drive around mode was awesome.

Shut up, not it's not, it's the most newest thing ever. Ever.

One thing, looking back at Sony's conference, that was odd was how lowkey some of the stuff felt. Like, when he confirmed Lost Planet 2 on the PS3 (which was something that was thought 360/PC) and then he unveiled an exclusive Rockstar game and a Resident Evil for the PSP and just kind of...went on.

I guess there's was no enough for either of those titles to show or whatever, just kind of weird. It was like, 'Oh well, we got a PS3 exclusive coming up from Rockstar called Agent and...moving on'
