EA sports to lock out multiplayer in used games

yeah, that doesn't make the least bit of sense

Well, actually it does make sense. If you lock out multiplayer in used copies, people who want to play multiplayer will have to buy a new copy.

Wow I don't play the games but EA proves yet again it'll take every opportunity to screw gamers over.

Well, by buying used games, gamers are kind of screwing them over, so it kind of comes full circle, don't you think?

I don't think so because not everyone wants to buy a game a full price. It's not cool if you're saving yourself money on a game but losing out on multiplayer

Yeah, well, you are saving yourself money and all, but it's strike against EA money-wise. They're just trying to find ways to make sure you're spending the money towards them, and not the retailers.

EDIT: Okay, not the best of ways to say that, since you're spending money towards the retailers either way. They're making sure that they get a 'rightful' cut of the pie from units sold that the retailers may get otherwise

I understand the reasoning but its a HORRIBLE decision. I really hope this bombs or better yet never gets implemented.

gamestop is already saying that they approve of it, unfortunately I think it will be implemented, thank god I barely play EA sports games

I understand you, thankfully I don't play that many EA games, Saboteur was the last thing I played from them

The car manufacturers don't whine like *****es when someone buys a used car instead of a new one. EA should grow a pair and shut up.

But then since their sport titles (aside from golf and nascar) are simply roster updates with fluff, buyers are getting ****ed even if they buy new.

I'm sure if they could find a way to realistically minimize used car sales, they would probably try it, if they haven't already in some form or fashion. I think it's a crap move and all myself, but it's not difficult to see why they're at least trying; same with the DLC in package stuff recently.

The only EA series I play online is the Burnout series but thats a day 1 purchase for me anyway

Simple solution? Pay the extra five ****ing dollars for a new copy.

Its only $5 if you are buying used copy from Gamespot. Other people, like myself dont buy used games from them. We get it from other sources, like Ebay, Craigslist, online forums. Others trade games via Goozex (I do all the time), Playswitch, etc... And theres also renting from Gamefly, Blockbister and other sources. Its NOT that simple

Either way, you're still screwing the people who made the game when you buy used.

And if you're talking about picking it up used months after it came out, then I can't imagine you would care about multiplayer anyway, so this wouldn't really effect you.

people that get used games months after a game comes out dont care about multiplayer? You are very mistaken with that statement

And Id have to disagree with you that buying used games is screwing over the game companies

If you're buying a game months after it comes out, you probably won't have a hard time finding it new at lower prices anyway, especially these sports games

I bought MKvs.DC almost a year after it was released and there are still plenty of players online.

Online prices are for the most part always cheaper and trading is only worth the value of what you are willing to give up. The games I want, I tend to buy new. The games Im in no rush to play, I trade for

Burnout Paradise, my favorite racer sill has a very active online community and that was released over 2 years ago

EA isn't just doing this for their sports titles. So those of you saying "well i dont play EA sports titles so this doesn't bother me" are in for a rude awakening. They did this for Mass Effect 2 as well as Battlefield:BC 2.

I'm completely, 110% for this. If you are going to buy something used, you dont deserve the full package that a customer who pays full price gets. You should get what you pay for. If you want to save money and buy 2nd hand, then you should suffer any consequences that comes with that. If we are talking about a game, then that would be what EA is doing, extra DLC etc, if we are talking about a car then that would be mileage, wear and tear, warranty etc.

I dont think your car analogy is quite right. The wear and tear faced with games would be scratched discs, damaged cases, manuals, and in some cases none. A better analogy would be for the car to have no tires. You dont sell a car with no tires. You can turn it on and run it, but it doesnt mean its completely usable.

And as far as not deserving what full price customers get, well thats the purpose of the preorder bonuses which they give out for free to those who buy the game used and shut used game owners out and in some cases end up charging them for later on. This is taking things a bit farther and too much IMO. Sony did this with their recent Socom PSP title, which required an online authentication code. They charged $20 for that, making a used copy far more expensive than a new one. Although this was done to deter piracy, but ultimately it amounted to the same thing. They got alot of flack for it. This really shouldnt become the norm.

I'm so very glad I don't care about multiplayer in most games.

I wonder what'll happen if this proves successful and Activision follows suit. All the Modern Warfare fans who couldn't necessarily afford a full-priced new copy are gonna be screwed.
