Early Oscar buzz

Well, I think the decision for 10 comes from the backlash of snubbing both The Wrestler and The Dark Knight for best picture. Even if The Reader had been left out, The Wrestler and The Dark Knight both getting nominated would've required 6 spots, so the extra nominations were deemed necessary last year.

This year, I'm not so sure which movies are deserving of the top five. So far, I'd give it to Inception, Toy Story 3, The Town, and Black Swan, based on my viewings and general buzz. I have no idea what would make up the final six. I can see Buried, The Social Network, Secretariat, Hereafter, The Company Men, Due Date, 127 Hours, Fair Game, Harry Potter, The Tourist, The Fighter, and True Grit all having a chance for one reason or another.

I don't think any Potter film will be nominated for Best Picture. And since both Buried and 127 Hours have similar premise (guy trapped in a confined area), I doubt Oscars will nominate both movies, and right now it remains to be seen if these two are indeed Oscar-worthy films.

127 Hours has HUGE BP potential

I can see the academy honoring the whole franchise with a nomination for either Part 1 or Part 2 (or both), much in the same manner Return of the King earned accolades for the whole trilogy. And I hadn't really thought about Buried and 127 hours being that similar. Like I said, I can see situations arising where any of those movies could be nominated, provided they are any good of course.

I think Michael Douglas definitely deserves a nod for Supporting Actor in Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps

People seriously liked The Kids Are All Right that much?

Just curious LaderLappen, what have your heard about TSN that makes you think that it's going to be a big hitter at the Oscars?

I've been reading some great reviews about it and since I'm also looking forward to it I'm hoping that Never Let Me Go nabs some nominations, I could see it getting nominated for Best Directing, Best Adapted Screenplay and possibly Best Leading Actress for Mulligan.

Well the reviews couldnt be better. I dont actually read them but if we look at the Rotten Tomatoes again, it has a perfect 100% and a 9.8/10 score(17 reviews).

Interesting, I'd have to read the reviews though (which I don't really want to before seeing it) to get a feel for what kind of praise it's getting. I mean there are plenty of films that have achieved 90%+ on RT yet not get a sniff of an Oscar.

I'd be very happy to think that it has a chance with the academy though. :yay:

DISNEY GOING ALL-OUT TO WIN OSCAR FOR TOY STORY 3

October 6, 2010

The mediocre box-office showing of The Social Network over the weekend may redound to the benefit of the Walt Disney Company, which is reportedly planning an extensive campaign to win the best picture Oscar for Toy Story 3. The New York Times reported that Disney “has decided to take a deep breath and push Pixar’s Toy Story 3 with all of its might.” The decision to do so, the newspaper said, went all the way to Disney CEO Robert Iger, who decided that Toy Story 3 should become the first animated film ever to win the best picture trophy. The newspaper observed that in addition to the fact that the movie earned “rapturous reviews” as well as $1.1 billion — more than any other film released this year — “Toy Story 3 has the ‘it’s overdue’ argument going for it.” Until this weekend, The Social Network was regarded as the frontrunner in the Oscar race.
