Juno star will play a roller derby star.

UK, January 16, 2008 - Ellen Page, who is generating award buzz for her star-making turn in Juno, is set to don skates and join a female roller derby team in her next film, according to Variety.

Whip It! follows the adventures of Bliss (Page), a rebellious Texan teen who rejects the world of beauty pageants in favour of the all-skating, all-fighting roller derby.

Real-life derby star Shauna Cross, aka Maggie Mayhem, has written the script, which will mark the directorial debut of Drew Barrymore.

"I've been working toward the goal of directing my entire life" says Barrymore. "Whip It! is a story that really spoke to me."

"I really admire how Drew constantly challenges herself as an artist" adds Page. "She's proven herself as an actress and a producer, and I have no doubt she'll bring great vision and creativity to the director's chair. I can't wait to kick ass on wheels!"

Whip It! is set to shoot in Texas this summer.

Marcia Gay Harden, Kristen Wiig, Juliette Lewis and Zoe Bell are joining Ellen Page and Drew Barrymore in Whip It!, the Mandate Pictures' roller derby comedy that marks the feature directorial debut by Barrymore.

The Hollywood Reporter says Harden plays an overbearing ex-beauty queen who would rather see her daughter, Bliss (Page), in pageants than skates. Wiig ("Saturday Night Live") plays Bliss' rowdy mentor, Malice in Wonderland. Lewis is Dinah Might, the star of Austin's top team. Bell plays a medical technician moonlighting as derby star Bloody Holly.

The film begins shooting this summer in Michigan and Texas.
