New Line Home Entertainment will release two-disc "Limited Edition" sets of "The Fellowship of the Ring," "The Two Towers" and "The Return of the King" with an exclusive behind-the-scenes documentary on August 29:

For each film, disc one presents both the theatrical version of the film and its extended edition through seamless branching, while disc two features an intimate, never-before-seen documentary created by Costa Botes. The feature-length documentaries, with more than 300 minutes of never-before-available footage, focus on a number of complexities and circumstances and affected the making of the movies.

Stay tuned here for when you can pre-order the sets.

More useless double-dipping.
I love these movies like you would't believe, but I'll just stick to my 3 Extended Edition DVD sets.

Same. What I have is good enough for me.

How can there be an additional 300 minutes of bonus material, each movie has two discs full already. I realize they were there for almost two years, but they covered pretty much everything important and unimportant already. Also, there's gotta be a drop in quality for the EE's of the movies if it's only on one disc.

I still haven't gotten the extended editions, so I may get these.

Dude, even with the new releases, the Extended Editions will probably be a better buy.
The movies are split in 2 discs, because they are very long, plus they have very good commentaries.

And the extras do cover EVERYTHING and are very rewatchable.
I doubt the transfers in these new versions are going to be that good, since they will be crammed in 1 disc.

If these new releases have good extras, I'll rent them and make a copy of the 2nd. disc and keep them, that's it.

I am done with double dipping. Piracy, here I come.

I already have as much LOTR DVD goodness as I'll ever need. I'll wait for the HD Blu-Ray release, thank you. :o

I already own all 3 Theatrical DVDs, and all 3 Extended Edition DVDs.

Only time I'll ever buy them again is when they come out on HD-DVD

Sorry, Timstuff...New Line is in the HD-DVD camp ;)

Me too. I have both versions, and don't really watch the original ones at all.

Why couldn't they put the extended versions on 1 DVD for the original sets? I hate having to replace the disc.

Yeah, i don't get that either. they would fit on one disc without any extra stuff.

The only thing that makes this tempting for me is that the entire film is on one disc, so I wouldn't have to change discs half-way through each damn time. But I guess image-quality has been compromised instead...

i need to know a bit more about that "never before seen documentary".

You guys know the primary reason the EEs were split onto two discs was because of FOUR audio commentaries, right? Audio takes up a ****ton of space.

So I wouldn't worry about the video transfer.

I think I pick these when they're on sale.

Get the extended. They're only $20 now.

I wish they put the complete films on one disc and then the complete commentaries on another.

That annoys the crap outta me. I'm already comfy, in the dark, haven't moved in a hour and a half, then I gotta get up, can't see, almost fall over from the sudden head rush from the lethargy, change discs, sit back down, and then realize I gotta go to the bathroom. Try to find the remote, find the pause button, find the light switch, and so on.........

Except I almost never watch extras, and I can't seem to bare to spend 90 bucks on 3 movies I already own.

However...
