please keep in mind i am semi tech-******ed

i want to get an external hard drive to boost up the memory i have. My desktop is only 40 gigs (got it dec 2003), and with as much stuff as i have I think an external hard drive is the way to go.

i have a lot of my music on here, and i take a lot of pictures of tons of different things, so i want something where I can store it all. and, i'm a kinda broke college student, so i don't want something that costs an arm and a leg.

i was hoping someone could recommend a really good one that is efficient and reliable, without costing my whole paycheck. a really user friendly one that is easy to figure out would be great too :) thanks

Desktop hu? Dont bother with an external hard drive then, they arent really ment to be running stuff off of and are made for mass storage to backup files. I have had nothing but problems when i had one and took it back.

What i will recommend tho is! Get another hard drive (say 350gig) move the jumper pins to the slave setting and wack it in your computer along side your main hard drive. This is what i do i keep all my music and important files on it. so if my pc does crash i lose nothing because its all on the slave.

Its REALLY easy to install a internal hard drive to act as a slave, basically plug and play

I have a Wester Digital external hard drive and it's great. I've run games from it and haven't had any huge problems. Mine has a 233 gig capacity, considerably more than my laptop's internal hard drive. I store mostly large-ish video files, although some music and pictures and word files that I don't use very often too.

I have an 320 gig external and it works like a charm - I would recommend a 250 gig - You can get them at any store basically. Newegg sells them for $105 - My dad got me this so I can make my trailers and stuff

I am also interested in getting an external hard drive as well to upload dvd files and make trailers as well. I'm wondering what the usual prices are and how much gig does it have.

I had the same problem too with my computer. So I got a Seagate 300 gig external. It's the best thing I've ever gotten and so far I've had no problems with it. (I think I just jinxed it :()

I got a new for $120 on ebay. It costs about $300 in stores. I'll try and find the seller for ya.

thanks for all the recommendations guys

when i get my tax money back, i think an EHD will be my splurge
