Kidz Bop is something of a joke to the musical world. You take a playlist of overplayed pop songs, gather a group of kids to sing them, record it, and go platinum. Kidz Bop has danced around profanity before with some quick editing. However, no amount of dancing could have prepared Fall Out Boy to the reaction they've garnered for the apperance of their hit "Dance, Dance" on Kidz Bop 10.
The songs overtly sexual lyrics hardly seem to work well coming out of a twelve year old's mouth. A sample line: "I only want sympathy in the form of you crawling into bed with me."
The outrage caused so much havoc, that FOB bassist Pete Wentz addressed the issue in his FallOutBoy.com blog.
"I've gotten one million e-mails and IMs about 'Dance, Dance' being on Kidz Bop," states Wentz, "Here's the answer: We don't know what's going on, because they can use a song without your permission. However, I can't imagine some young kids singing 'crawling into bed with me' and all. If they change the lyrics, I believe they need to get permission. We're looking into it."
Apparently, the makers of Kidz Bop (Razor & Tie) do not need the artist's permission to feature a song (provided they pay royalties). However, permission is needed if lyrics/music need any sort of editing.
Thanks to MTV News for the heads up.
