Can you think of any example when a movie based on a book, comic, TV series, cartoon, video game, etc. did something the filmmakers thought the fans would love and it just completely backfired and ended up becoming terrible?

Venom comes to mind. Guess that's more the studio then actual filmmakers though.

The Juggernaut line in X-3. It was a nod to a popular youtube video , but fans weren't impressed.

X-Men: The Last Stand.

First time I can really remember thinking in the theatre, that some scenes were there for no purpose other than just to give fans the familiar image. Hell, whole characters, like Juggernaut or Angel (who had slightly more development). The Danger Room fight scene was fan service to the bare minimum. Beast, who turned out better.

And in the same movie they have the ridiculous idea to kill Cyclops, and leave out Nightcrawler. Which would be the exact opposite of fan service. I don't know what to make of this movie these days.

Oh man, and that.

Gambit from X-Men Origins. The role was shoehorned in becuase he's popular, but it didn't play well enough for any sort of expansion or demand to return.

Fan service is usually terrible. Obtrusive and unneeded.

the juggernaut one is a great example

Could the same thing be said about Deadpool?

I thought the "I'm the Juggernaut b****" youtube videos came after the movie line?

You learn something new everyday.

I'd add to the list most cameos. I wouldnt neccesarily say they've gone wrong. I just think theyre played out. The Lou Ferrigno one in TIH was kinda lame. That's the only one that comes to mind right now.

Probably in a way, but oddly enough there was such a backlash afterwords that it actually got the Deadpool solo moving forward by showing Fox there was more interest in the character. It almost made him more popular, and fans still wanted Reynolds to return because of the pre Deadpool parts.

Not sure if he was shoved in the film because they knew he was popular or because they wanted a villain to take license with.

Yeah, it was before the movie. Brett Ratner loved the video so much that he put but the line in at the last minute.

Another one that comes to mind is Mortal Kombat Annihilation, with adding all the characters from the game into the movie with little to no development.

Now that I think about, with the exception of the first Mortal Kombat, all movies based on fighting games have done this.

Gosh where do I begin? I think shoving into the Reeves-verse was a mistake but they thought it was cool to keep it alive?

Yeah the youtube thing came out first.

It's a weird inside 'of the now' joke (IE Dated). In context, I guess the joke is fine but it's been largely forgotten. Now watching it, it's almost like Jones was waiting for an applause after the line delivery. It's weird. Stupid Ratner.

Alien vs Predator and the even more atrocious sequel Requiem. Requiem was in fact fan service done by fanboys with no concept of filmmaking and eager to relive all the notable bits of the previous films without adding anything notable to it save a godawful cheap gore scare with the "birthing" scene.

The first AVP at least had the excuse of trying even if it failed to accomplish its goal.

QFT, very QFT.

Also MOS with the action. A little too much, Snyder. I gladly take Henry talking and giving Lois those googly eyes, though.

I think this pretty much wins the thread.

I dont even think it's a terrible movie. I wont buy it or go out of my way to watch it, but I dont think it's the worst thing ever.

But, for sure, this is the worst case of fan service.

I still think AVP: Requiem is a worse piece of fan service but I won't deny Superman Returns is a very close runner up.

Not they..... Singer. He was supposed to be crafting a reboot of the Superman films, but instead set out to right the wrongs of the Donnerverse, and give it a proper ending.

That was admirable...... but it did nothing to help the franchise other than be, yes..... fan service. To himself, and everyone who loved S:TM and Superman II.

I'm not sure what to make of Sucker Punch.

Sucker Punch is fanboy deconstruction diguised as fan service. At least it tried to be.

Star Trek Into Darkness. Wanted to be its own thing while still being a Wrath of Khan remake.
