...are they absolutely necessary? The reason I ask is because I have a hard drive with 2 small fans that are built in and the have both stopped working. Personally I don't care because it made the computer much quieter, the tower is well ventilated, and it's in a good dust free area.

I just want to make sure that the next step down the road isn't hard drive failure. If anybody has input, feel free......

None of my hard drives have fans on them (i did buy a fan once but it was useless) and my system runs fine.

Seems odd that your computer would come with a HD fan on it, is it a unit screwed on with its own power socket or is it totally integrated with the hard drive?

No, it has 2 that are totally integrated on the bottom side of the drive. There was a point where a wire was touching one of the fans and making a rubbing noise. I opened up the tower and made things inside a little neater with some wire ties.

I always found the fans loud and annoying, so I'm kinda glad that they died. My tower purrs like a kitten now. I just hope it isn't a symptom of the hard drive eventually crapping out.

The hard drive or the inside of the case never really gets hot, I've got a sweet case fan in there. There's also a fan on the bottom of the power supply and the fan for the CPU that's pretty big and works very well.
