Fantastic Four: First Steps General News & Discussion Thread (TAG SPOILERS)

I'm seeing Sinners in IMAX on Saturday, I'm prayyyyying this new trailer gets played during it.

Just to see the full effect.

The difference between my ipad and tv was a big one. So I can't wait to see it on the big screen

Why are they saving him for 616? What if audiences fall in love with this version? You are going to undercut and not use Shalla-Bal? It would be a bad look if they do that.

I could possibly see in a sequel an angry Galactus returning to Shalla-Bal's homeworld (616 version or merged after Secret Wars) to take Norrin as his next herald as punishment for her inevitable betrayal, but whether we want to see another version of the same story involving a surfer being an accomplice to Galactus only to turn on him again, I don't know. It would make Galactus look incredibly dumb so I've no idea why he would do that.

For that to even happen, they really need to make both Galactus and Shalla Bal work in First Steps. For now that's all I'm concerned about.

Think about this. Audiences became so invested in Peggy Carter that the MCU ended up making Peggy Carter into Steve Rogers' one true love. Steve literally goes back in time just to be with her and have a life with her. Sharon Carter was completely marginalized and misused as a result. But that was because the MCU gravitated to Peggy Carter instead. Some of us, as Marvel fans, are disappointed about what happened with Sharon, but does Marvel Studios care? Do general audiences care? NOPE!

So realistically, if Shalla-Bal ends up working and audiences take to her, the MCU isn't just going to get rid of her and retire her to replace her with Norrin Rad. The optics would be terrible. Frankly, the optics would be bad either way.

Point being, they aren't setting up Julia Garner, an award-winning actress, in this role just to quickly jettison her.

I also don't see a good reason to "save" him for later. You're getting the classic Surfer origin now. They're not redoing the Galactus coming to Earth thing a 3rd time. Why wouldn't you just use him now, even as a variant, so people can connect with them now? Or even since the FF are no doubt going to be in the MCU eventually, why wouldnt you just have the Surfer move over with them in Secret Wars and use the story real estate that you've already done as opposed to have to reintroduce a new one later? It's the same with Doom. Why would we get a "real" Doom later on when they're investing 2 Avengers movies using RDJ? This concept makes no sense to me.

The views and likes in the first 20 hours are not exciting...

I hope the first teaser didn't damage the interest of GA.

Shalla Bal can still be in 616, and would be essential to tell the traditional Norrin Radd story.

But I’m not writing it. Just speculating on the plan, and since we had an alternate universe Shalla Bal in the comics, and since FF is set in an alternate universe, I’m speculating Norrin Radd will be the Silver Surfer in 616. 🤷‍♂️

All any of us are doing is speculation at the end of the day. I just from a storyline economic standpoint don't see why you would go about using a version of the Surfer you don't intend to be your longterm Surfer when you're already sending this FF to the MCU and doing the Surfer's origin this movie already. Cause you'd then if this isn't your long term Surfer have to reintroduce them to the audience yet again, and they won't adapt this story again. So I don't see why you would waste your screentime, especially as expensive as these movies are to make.

We could make a list of 1000 things Marvel did that we didn’t understand why.

But they did them.

We could, but this isn't like the John Krasinski thing which I would also fine under this was stupid to do but ultimately that was a cameo. So it was a minor role. Surfer here is probably going to be the antagonist we see the most in the movie given its hard to feature Galactus much in a fight. It would make much more sense to me to use this movie that already is telling the Surfer's origin as a means to spin the character off on their own. Since they're going to be here already

I don't think the CG is bad at all.
But SS design was better in RoSS.
There you could notice every muscle, wrinkle and such on his skin. It looked like a bare person made out of silver (with the obvious exceptions).
Here, she looks like someone wearing a silver bodysuit. Her silver skin looks too smooth and it feels odd.
Then again, we've only seen very little footage. I hope it ends up looking better on the big screen.

Again I still think Norrin Radd might show up, but at this point, IDGAD.

As long as we hear “To me, my board!” and the character can take a punch from The Thing that sends them clear across Midtown Manhattan, I’ll be a happy camper.

I dont have a horse in the race of we must get Norrin at some point, personally. I am perfectly happy moving on with this version as our Surfer moving forward. I am just coming at this from a storytelling POV. I just don't see any storytelling logic in purposefully making a one off Surfer. Which is why I don't think we are doing that. Now we are getting a replacement Falcon right now in the MCU. but that and Kate and Jane Foster and such all happened like a decade later. So I could see Norrin coming in later on in that capacity in like 10 years as a 2nd Surfer, but if we get Norrin any sooner than that and this version ends up a one off, that to me would be a Disney pivot. I don't think that's the current intention

Not gonna lie, it is kind of a bummer that Norrin Radd won't get his due on the big screen . But aside from that, I have no problems with the Silver Surfer they went with.

It probably didnt’t.
Unfortunately,
The Fantastic Four has ALWAYS been a tough sell.
Except, when you called them The Incredibles and made it into an animated film,
WITH NO ORIGIN STORY!
GO FIGURE!

It literally had a million views within its first hour of release.

We gotta stop making a dollar out of fifteen cents.
It's done fine. 13m views, 383k likes in 24 hours is pretty average for a movie this size. But a million views within an hour isn't the best measuring stick. Fans will flock once they know. It's more a question of staying power.

They did say somewhere that there is only one Galactus in the entire multiverse and this is him.

I still think Norrin Radd will get introduced somewhere.
Theoretically you could have a Norrin Radd introduced but…it does seem it would be a bit redundant considering this new female surfer is essentially serving the same role he did in his very first appearance in the comics, and Marvel doesn’t like to retread ground too much with stuff already adapted in previous movies. Not unless, of course, they bring something new to the table.

Which is why even though they are doing same Coming to Galactus story that was covered in RoTSS; they main differential in Marvel Studios re-adaption is that we’re getting a “proper” Galactus in all his gigantic purple glory and we’re getting Silver Surfer again, but this time they’re going with a different character entirely while essentially serving the same role as the original Surfer. So I think it’s pretty unlikely we’re seeing Norrin in any shape or form in the MCU just going by how Marvel doesn’t like to rehash too many elements that invites comparison to the previous movies.

That being said, I would love to see Norrin but I have to agree with Spider-Fan that I wouldn’t hold my breath on seeing on seeing him anytime soon.

It would be very funny of Norrin just showed up in Secret Wars. Which will have everyone, their mother, and duplicates of their mothers.

The teaser did much better and it's a problem because usually the official trailer of MCU movies is bigger than the teaser.

Why don’t more studios upload 4K trailers? Instead we get these blocky ass 1990s RealPlayer videos on YT.

Eventually there will be other trailer sites that will have superior versions like this one:
