What female actor would be best suited to play the Doctor? I'm not talking about an actress replacing Peter Capaldi, I'm talking about who would play the 10th and 11th Doctors if David Tennant and Matt Smith wasn't cast.

she would have been too young at the time, but looking at her NOW, I think Ophelia Lovibond of Hooten and the Lady would make a decent female Doctor...

Would like to see Atwell in the role. Heck, she's even expressed interest in playing the role in the past.

I posted this thread under "Misc. TV Series" because I don't know where else to post it.

With gallifrey and the time lords being Saved Just bring back romana With a new regeneration Give a spin off show and Problem solved

I am curious...

why does it make a difference if there was a female Doctor before or after Peter Capaldi?

are you asking who is the female equivalent of David Tennant or Matt Smith?

or is it more about what actresses were popular/good enough around that time (2005-2014) to have play the role(s)

sorry just seemed odd that you'd call out just those Doctor's to be replaced, instead of just suggestion a Woman for his next regeneration (or of any other time for that matter)

I wouldn't mind Ophelia Lovibond. Definitely don't want Atwell though. I'm bored of watching her after Agent Carter.

What if the Doctor is in bed with one of his female companions when he regenerates, and then he regenerates as a woman?

The Doctor is supposed to be kind of quirky/off-beat looking so I think the woman from Sherlock would make a great Doctor(even after Capaldi)

Louise Brealey

I think the Doctor would be more suited to play a transgender character if they ever change his (biological) sex. As in, he regenerates into a woman, but continues to identify as a male.

Ophelia Lovibond.

I think someone else on the main Dr. Who thread thought of an amazing throwaway joke that 12 regenerates into 13 as a woman, but then around the third episode into the new series, 13 remarks, "Wait, I'm a woman now! Fancy that." or something to that effect to infer that she didn't even notice her physical gender until that very moment.

In any event, I think what we understand as transgenderism wouldn't apply to the Gallifreyans; it would be like a centipede trying to apply its perspectives on gender and consciousness to a human being.

And yes, the next Doctor should be a woman. No reason anymore why that boundary shouldn't be broken anymore. The only logistical problem is the moment of regeneration when the new Doctor is stuck in clothes made for someone a good 7 inches taller.

And in Atwell's case, the completely opposite shape. :ninja:

I think it would be similar to the Dax character on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and the Dax symbionte. Some of its past hosts were male, but the ones in the series were female. He/She still remembered all of the past lives and past loves, but was forbidden to reassociate with any of the previous lovers. But Jadzia Dax broke that law, which led to the "lesbian" kiss on DS9, which wasn't really that, because the two parties involved were husband and wife before.

Ophelia Lovibond used to be in Elementary, but was sadly written out. Hopefully she comes back for a guest spot.

I think most people who have played Sherlock Holmes could probably play Doctor Who as well: Benedict Cumberbatch, Jonny Lee Miller, even RDJ.

Admittedly, it's tricky to establish a paralelism between a sci-fi concept and a real life thing without it coming distasteful or preachy.

From the Time Lords we know have changed gender in the show, the only relatively useful example is The General from The Day of the Doctor; we've only heard about the Corsair and the Master/Missy isn't exactly a paragon of normal Time Lord attitudes (or sanity).

The General seemed pretty okay with both his/her bodies and the people around him/her changed pronouns when he regenerated. I guess the Doctor wouldn't be different (though Eleven seemed at least a bit surprised when he thought he was "a girl").

Anyway, I also want a female Doctor Who already, at worst it won't be any worse than some less liked regenerations but personally I think they've got very interesting ground to explore.

They can have a female Doctor. It's not like it's going to be permanent. It will only last for a few seasons, if that, and then there will be a new actor. The thing about Dr Who's regenerations is that everyone has the chance to have a go.

Famke Janssen, but sorry she is busy filming movies and her own tv show. slay

Other option - Maggie Siff

I don't find Famke Janssen quirky or eccentric at all. She seems like she'd just be a regular woman.

^ That is incorrect dark raven, but I appreciate that you may not be familiar with her work. she is a TALENTED oscar worthy actress and can play anything :)

I agree with Ophelia Lovibond or Lily James.

Not sure about this retcon type stuff. I think we probably would have had something really notable if 10 or 11 had been female, but I also would not want to erase or lose what Tenant and Smith have done.

I would tune in every week if Ruth Wilson were the Thirteenth Doctor.

that's 5 for Ophelia Lovibond and for Hayley Atwell, 2 for Felicity Jones and for Ruth Wilson and one each for Rebecca Hall, Louise Brealey, Lily James, Famke Janssen, Maggie Siff, Emily Blunt and Esme Bianco...

could anyone else see some of their companions taking on the role if they were not cast?

It's just wishful thinking on my part. Here's another choice:

Esme Bianco

How come nobody voted for Emily Blunt or Kate Winslet?
