it's (Three Lions) a song that is self-deferential, much of what British & English humour is.

It was written by 2 comedians anyway: Baddiel and Skinner.

And wasn't the original meaning and context of the chorus about how it was the first time a championship match was played on home soil since 1966? (Euro 96). Hence, football's coming home. But over time the meaning changed to signify something deeper: that we'd take the cup home.

'It's Coming Home' sounds more assured than the reality of 'We don't stand a chance'.

Plus the sentiments (at the time) helped propel a team forward, (tabloid media took it to far though), I think also you have to include the timing of context within the release, we were at the height of 'Britpop', Trainspotting had just come out and it was considered the greatest era of 'youth culture' since the 60's and confidence within the country was on the up and a massive sway was part of the political dynamic that the Tories were finally on their last legs and the next year with the election they would finally fall.

I was 21 that summer and living in Manchester, at University doing my finals and it was a golden time for many. The song captured a 'moment', the team and country rode it.

I think I had just graduated and went off on holiday for the summer.

Yes, it is a true Britpop song, with lyrics rather tongue in cheek like many other Britpop songs at the time. Britpop was almost like a second British Invasion, except that technically the "second British Invasion" usually refers to the 80s with Synth Pop and New Wave. So I guess Brit Pop could be a 3rd British Invasion, which would actually be more similar to the original British Invasion from the 60s.

Although wasn't 96 when the Spice Girls and girl power started taking over?

Hard to believe that was all 20 years ago already. Seems like just yesterday.

Italia'90 Song. (Though I don't understand a word they are singing.)

I think if people believe the "Football's coming home" line to be arrogant depends on whether you're singing Three Lions 96 or Three Lions 98. The lyrics and attitude of both versions are quite different from each other. The 96 version is the classic, which is essentially a more humble "keep hope alive" song, while the 98 re-recording is more of a "we're going to win this" song.

This is a good analysis of the two versions:

And apparently some England fans are also singing the wrong lyrics in the chorus. Instead of "Jules Rimet still gleaming" they are singing "Jewels remain still gleaming" :funny:

So, I was hoping Argentina, ‘cause I love Messi. I was all about Senegal. Now I’m Team Croatia, and I feel obligated to root for Russia.
we have (had!:waa:) almost the same favs :mnm:

Tho Im not obliged to root for us (only for Dzyuba:drl:) but for some reason Im like 99% sure we'll win & I'll be mourning the team that actually can play this game aka Croatia, much more deserving one :csad:

Speaking of songs, this Argentina one that fans sang all over the city some days ago is so catch Im not able to throw it out of my head:woot:

Wonder if Deschamps's gonna risk starting Sidibe as RB. Pavard hasn't been very good this WC (which is obvious for a CB playing wide) and too defensive. Uruguay is playing solid defensive tactics so I expect Sidibe to make the difference on the right flank.

I see France beating Uruguay today to move on to the Semi final

It's definitely going to be a massive struggle for Uruguay without Cavani.

Brazil are losing to Belgium today...the Belgians got this

It wouldn't be a 'WORLD' CUP anymore if Brazil & Uruguay lose their respective games tonight.
