Disagree with you there, if that ball had been heading straight to an unmarked French player's feet & a the ball strikes a player's wayward hand, it should be a penalty regardless of whether it was the intentions of the culprit.

But that isn’t a disagreement with what I said (I agree with the above). I was saying a handball can be a penalty even if there is no chance of a goal. Any foul in the box can be a penalty even if the player on the team that wins it has his back to goal on the far corner of the box.
