Christopher Nolan wins this.
I think Memento and The Dark Knight are better than any movie Fincher has done to date. Although I think 7 comes really close and I really do love fight club.

Fincher, although both are very talented directors for sure.

Fincher, I think. He gets better performances, bring more subtlety to his films, etc. Hell, he made THE GAME palpable. THE GAME.

Nolan's main edge is Wally Pfister, but that's not you know, him.

Nolan tends to pander a bit of late. And while that may be on his writers, it makes it into his films. Not a big fan of that.

Hmm,well I don't care for Nolan's other non Batman movies. To me his Batman movies go from average to sub par. While as for Fincher,I haven't
seen alot of his movies as well but from the stuff he has done that I wanted to see I have liked. So Fincher wins this very easily. Personally,I think Nolan is a bad Tim Burton wannabe for the most part.

This whole post in one big barrel of WTF.

My thoughts exactly. :funny:

I haven't seen a lot of Fincher's films, unfortunately. :csad: But from what I have seen, both have the same visual grit to their movies which is why I think people lump them together.

However, Fincher is definitely more hardcore with his work. Nolan's films rely more on sheer storytelling for their power instead of showing you anything truly shocking. That's probably why I have no qualms about watching Nolan films, since they lack gore and I hate gore. :o

Anyways, it's down to personal preference. :oldrazz: But I prefer Nolan because his films are more accessible to me and I like the headiness of his storytelling.

all opinions aside, this is stupid. stylistically, nolan is like the anti-burton

The things with Fincher is that he's made a few dumber movies with Panic Room and Alien 3 whereas so far all of Nolan's films have been incredible. Then again, when Fincher does great work, it is great. Zodiac, Se7en, and Fight Club were all incredible. This is hard, but I might have to give it to Nolan...Only because none of his films have been bad. If Benjamin Button would have blown me away, he might have won this round.

Nolan's made two great films, Batman Begins and Momento. Fincher's made two great films, Se7en and Fight Club.

Fincher doesn't let actors get away with the half-assed performances that Nolan does though, nor does he settle on average dialogue and corny one-liners.

I love Nolan, but Fincher's the better director. As of now anyway.

When it comes to comparisons like these I typically go with the elder director simply because he may have influenced the younger guy who came after him and given him a blueprint for success. For example, we know Nolan took cues from Michael Mann's Heat for The Dark Knight. Who's to say Fincher also didn't influence Nolan in some way when it came to dark films. Fincher was doing it first and doing it great so he gets the nod from me.

I'd say it's pretty much a tie as of right now. Both have made about the same number of quality films. If Inception turns out like I hope it does, I'll take Nolan by a nose.

Exactly.

Has Fincher ever talked about his own influences?

Nolan is pretty overrated, and a semi-one note director. Fincher actually has range and all of his movies have been watchable and entertaining in some manner. Can't say the same for Nolan.
