A major new update has gone live for Firefall, bringing with it new types of weapons and weapon damage types.

As the name suggests, Patch 1.1: Elemental Destruction is all about ways to unleash different elements upon enemies to bring about their ruin. The update's newest weapons are the plasma flak cannon and bio injector, however even older weapons can get new modifiers to change their damage type. The additional weapon modifiers include thermal, flaming thermal, bioactive, virulent bioactive, electrical, charged electrical, beam, laser beam, microplasma, and emissive microplasma. Even grenade launchers have gotten love with new ways to throw out explosives in a spread or cluster.

Patch 1.1 also adds five dynamic encounters, two new ARES job boards, and a hardcore version of Kanaloa the Destroyer.

Check out Massively's previous in-depth look at the new weapon types of Patch 1.1.

Firefall : Chosen Offensive - Final Assault Coming October 5th

Posted Oct 02, 2014

EXCLUSIVE QUESTIONS FOR THE MMORPG.COM COMMUNITY:
Q: It's been a long time since any studio focused on holding in game events with the players LIVE. Ultima Online being the one everyone points to. Do you think this is something you can do on a regular basis?
A: We’re always planning live events for our players and are releasing them on a very regular basis. One of our goals with Firefall is to create a truly unique experience where there’s always something different going on in the world. For example, on top of the Chosen Offensive event, we’re also running a live event called “Codename: Crossfire,” where the Chosen forces are facing off against bandits and/or other Accord soldiers, and players get to join the Accord forces in extinguishing both the Chosen and bandit threats. These live events, along with our dynamic events, really change the environment for the players and we’re definitely planning on new and exciting live events for the future.
Q: What about pushing the narrative? Would you ever use these events to sort of write the story for the world, based on the outcome?
A: We have a lot of flexibility for these live events in terms of what direction we would like to take the players. That said, nothing is ever out of the question here at Red 5 and we would love to explore ways where we can tie the live events into the game’s lore.

Q: If you could do the event over, what would you change about it? Something you learned for next time?

A: If we were to run this event again, we’d like to bring in additional variations of Chosen bosses. Right now the players are only able to engage the menacing Chosen Earthbreaker boss, but I’d be very interested in seeing other types of Chosen bosses with different abilities assaulting New Eden. It would give players a much more dynamic experience. On top of that, we’ve learned a lot from the event and will use that knowledge on how to improve our future ones!

Players are invited to attend the third and final Chosen Offensive. The developers will be suited up in elite Chosen monstrosities and will be taking on the players in a battle royal. The event is slated to take place on Sunday, October 5th from 11:00 a.m. PDT to 2:00 p.m. PDT (2:00 p.m. EDT - 5:00 p.m. EDT). Developers were trounced last week by the players and devs are out for revenge.
Scott Rudi, Director of Design at Red 5 Studios, had a few words to share about the epic experiences from both the players’ and developers’ perspective.
Q: How did the idea for the Chosen Offensive events begin?
A: The idea behind the Chosen Offensive actually began back during the final months of beta when we did the Doomsday event, which was a similar engagement where we (the development team) hopped into the game as elite Chosen bosses. The original thought to do this came around during a brainstorming session on creating more challenging content and someone joked, “Why don’t we go in the game as bosses and kill the players?” We ran with it and the rest of it is history!
Q: What has been the reaction from fans?
A: We’ve had overwhelmingly positive feedback from our player-base for the Chosen Offensive events. Not only is it a challenging way to keep our players on their toes, it also gives us the opportunity to connect with our fans directly. It’s cool and refreshing to see our players post screenshots and videos of the encounter along with a message, “Thanks for allowing me to rearrange your face 5 times over, RudiKazootie.” I’m pleasantly surprised with how cool our players are and how much they get into the event – they have fun fighting with us and we have a great time hanging out with them online.
Q: Can you share any cool stories about unexpected results from the Chosen Offensive?
A: I think the coolest part about the Chosen Offensive is the level of interest we received. From the first Chosen Offensive weekend alone, we were able to raise our concurrent user-base by over 200% which was absolutely amazing. These results along with the overall community enjoyment factor really motivate us in coming up with more creative content for the players in the future.
Q: How does the dev team prepare for the Chosen Offensive event?
A: (Laughs) Well first we worked our butts off to get the event set up, and then we have a briefing for everyone who will be participating in the event to go over how we want the overall event to go as well as go over some ground rules, like no jumping into the middle of Copacabana and nuking all the new players who’re just trying to learn how to open their world map (as tempting as that sounds, really). After that we all just jump online and have a great time with the players.
Q: Describe the Chosen Offensive from the player’s point of view.
A: We’ve had multiple players give very different accounts of the Chosen Offensive encounter, but I think one of my favorite ones started off with something like, “I was biking my way to Copa and then I saw a Chosen Earthbreaker fly over my head, raining death on the town.” I mean, most players probably look for our locations in zone chat, but it’s refreshing to hear that some players just get sucked into this epic boss battle while going about their own business. It’s this type of uncertainty in our encounters that I think makes it extremely fun and unique.

During Wintertide, players can try their hand at Whack-an-Elf or take part in a grand melee snowball fight. Completing Wintertide events makes players eligible for some awesome gifts courtesy of special vendors in Copacabana, Dredge, and Kanaloa Research Station.
Father Wintertide: Father Wintertide’s rocket sleigh has been shot down by bandit scoundrels and he requires your aid! Help him by collecting parts to fix his rocket sleigh and defending the presents from the villainous bandits. Be warned though, these bandits have brought some serious firepower with them and they mean business!

Snowball Fight: What better way to celebrate Wintertide than rolling up a ball of snow and planting them in your friends’ faces? To make it official, we’re putting up Snowball Fight arenas all around the world so that you can challenge friends and strangers at any time. Visit a Snowball Fight arena and let the battles begin!
Whack an Elf: Admit it, we’ve all thought about bonking these little annoying humanoids from time to time. Well now you can! Whack an Elf is a personal game that you can spawn on demand, which will allow you to lay waste to the pesky elves with a festive holiday hammer. The more of them you wreck, the more points you’ll receive and the more prizes you can get!

Firefall is prepping an all-new crafting system

Good news for those disillusioned with the state of crafting in Firefall: Red 5 is preparing an "all-new crafting system" to replace the current setup. New crafting dev Gortok spoke a little to this on the forums over the past month, saying that as a person who's designed four such systems for MMOs, he finds Firefall's crafting both pointless and grindy.

Fortunately, Gortok has ideas to make it all much, much better: "It will take some time, and my plan is to actually rip out the existing recipes and research, replace the entire thing from scratch, and implement an entirely new system for the actual act of crafting. There are a lot of great things that we lost, and I want to bring some of those feelings back without the complication and confusion"

Some of the changes include restructuring research, consolidating recipes, crafting in batches, and making thumping "more desirable" again.

Listen up grunts, did you honestly think you'd live forever? Well, you won't. No sir, you're going to head back to the front lines of Firefall with its upcoming patch and probably die. Then we're going to drag your corpse back to the base, jolt it with enough juice to make you glow in the dark, and send your reanimated wimpering frame into even more harm.

But that's the fun, eh?

Firefall's posted a new video that highlights the big upcoming patch. Features incoming include the Amazon Warzone, the big game hunt, the reputation system, and improvements to loot and ranged weapon modules.

Firefall : The Future of Red 5 with Chris Whiteside

Posted May 26, 2015

Chris Whiteside is best known in the gaming industry as the former Lead Producer of ArenaNet on Guild Wars, then the Design Director for Guild Wars 2. After roughly five years, Chris decided to part with the Bellevue, Washington developer. He went into consultancy, but that only lasted a little bit as one of the companies he consulted for was Red 5 Studios, makers of hardpressed but excellent MMO Firefall. In short, the studio’s been working quietly to not only find its groove with Firefall, but move into other areas as well. We caught up with Chris to chat about Red 5 and the future of his new studio.
Read more of Bill Murphy's Firefall: The Future of Red5 with Chris Whiteside.
Chris started by noting that there’s no doubt the Firefall team has been through a great deal before finally finding exactly where they wanted the game to go last year. One of the things that drew him to Red 5 was the sheer amount of design and boundary-pushing going on behind closed doors at the studio. The team, which is still growing every day is very collaborative and eager to show the world that they’ve got a game everyone should be playing.
They know this is a big challenge, but Red 5 and Chris knows they can deliver.
FF1_t.jpg

I asked Chris what he and the team think Firefall is at its core. Quick and to the point he replied: it’s an MMO. It’s a world. He continued, “We’ve done a lot of work to make the shooting side of things as tight and responsive as they need to be. The minute to minute gameplay is there and solid. But now we want to push the social side of things, focusing on the Army vs. Army, the Guild vs. Guild, alliances, grouping, and more valuable and easy to discern open world content that gets people together.”
I asked Chris to draw parallels to Guild Wars 2, because the open world content is kind of their hallmark, to which he said, “What we’re trying to do with Firefall is a lot like the stuff we tried to do [at ArenaNet]. The ‘Golden Path’ story content has been fine-tuned and works really well to drive people through the narrative these days, but our core concern going forward now is the open world system and its content. We want to make the world feel more alive and have it gel to draw people back in on a daily basis.”
FF2_t.jpg

To that end, you can expect to see the next few months of Firefall updates bring in systems that pair people together easier, without hassle. There will be big UI improvements, new big fights, and loads more dynamic content all coming. Going forward Red 5 will also be opening up a shared development path, similar to what Planetside 2 does with the roadmap of design points and letting players decide where and what to work on next.
FF3_t.jpg

Chris said that with, “The next big update, is a sort of “Re-Master”. The basic open world, refinement of the core experience, and social systems are all being evolved. There is a huge revamp on top of the initial experience. The community has been noticing our meandering direction with the pillars of the game, and we’ve noticed it. We’re working on polish, narrowing the focus down to what works. You have a frame, you’re a hero, and you’re working with others and focusing on the story that drives the world after the Firefall catastrophe. And to really do that as best we can, we need to make the entire game feel more social.”
Chris went on to explain that Red 5 is making progression and rewards feel more impactful. Itemization is getting tweaked to feel like it matters more, alternate advancement is in the planning stages, and progression is finally about to make you feel more powerful. Not just more powerful stat-wise though, but with more meaningful and situational abilities and weapons. They want players to push strategic shooting and attacks over just firing away at tons of bullet sponges.
To that end, I asked Chris is Firefall was the only project in the works. To which he replied, “Firefall is currently the only game in development, but we’re looking at expanding into more intellectual property that we can create internally. We have more stories to tell, but there’s nothing official to announce just yet.”
FF4_t.jpg

He went on, “We’ve been through the fire, and we’ve grown close. These guys have bonded into a truly collaborative business, and our overall plan is to become the best online world building studio in the business. We know what people remember from our checkered past, but we know we can prove we’ve come through the fire and controversy ready and raring.”
I wondered then aloud, what about Firefall on Xbox One or PS4? Coyly, all Chris could say was that he’d be happy to answer that in the upcoming months, but no comment for now. But boy, wouldn’t Firefall on the PS4 or XBone be something special? Wink, wink.
To end our conversation, Chris seemed pretty amped for the next few months, “It’s an exciting time. We’ve got a lot to prove. But at the same time, there’s almost less pressure now. We don’t mind having to prove ourselves, but we’re glad to have the support from our financiers over the long period. We’re staffing, building, and working away to make Firefall exactly the game we know it can be. We’re pretty sure the players will be happy when they see what we’ve been building.”

Firefall : Its Groove Found, Its Future Bright

Posted Sep 30, 2015

To say Firefall has had a long and controversy filled history would probably be an understatement. There was a time when developer Red 5 Studios seemed destined for a fate similar to that of Flagship Studios. But problem child founder Mark Kern was ousted, Chinese company The9 invested 20 million dollars, and perhaps most telling... Chris Whiteside was brought on to lead the studio and future development of Firefall.
Read more of Bill Murphy's Firefall: Its Groove Found, Its Future Bright.
As we reported a while back, Chris brings with him a wealth of experience, most notably from his time with ArenaNet and the Guild Wars franchise. Just recently at ChinaJoy, Red 5 revealed at the Sony press conference that Firefall is making its way to the Playstation 4. We caught up with Chris last week, after giving him some time to recover from the jet lag, to chat about all things Firefall and just what players can look forward to in the coming weeks and months.
Army%20V%20Army_t.jpg

First up on the chat docket was the impending PS4 version. There's no official launch date in mind yet, but they hope to even make it so that PS4 and PC players are on the same servers. It really depends on a lot of things, but they hope they can make it happen. It will definitely make use of the controller's 6-Axis tech, vibration, and touchpad controls though. Will it be on the Playstation VR (formerly Morpheus)? That's one Chris couldn't comment on quite yet.
Moving on from the PS4 chat, since it's still a ways away, we started talking about all of the big changes and additions coming to Firefall in the next several months. Chris and Red 5 feel that, even before Chris joined, the team has figured out exactly what they want Firefall to be: an MMO first, a shooter second, with a focus on exploration, story, and crafting. What that did was give them a clear mission and path towards making Firefall the fully-featured world it was always meant to be.
With that in mind, Chris was super excited to tell us that Army versus Army PVP, Corps versus Corps massive scale territory control is very nearly ready for primetime. These open PVP zones will be huge persistent territories with forts, structures to build and upgrade, and will present players with the sort of futuristic siege warfare they've been craving since FF was in alpha. Along with the warzones, there will be player contracts to let players work for hire in armies, armies will have their own looks to put on weapons and frames, there will be progression within armies, you'll be able to own siege weapons, new kinds of mechs and of course frame upgrades.
Journey%202%20concept%201_t.jpg

Polishing is the name of the game right now when it comes to live and future Firefall updates. They've been fine-tuning the leveling experience, adding new missions, massive new raids, and so on and so forth. Red 5 is happy now to have that core game in place as they start serious work on the next evolution of Firefall. First is the army versus army PVP stuff we've long been waiting for, but after that? How about a big continuation of the main storyline? It'll bring us to a whole new place on earth as the Melding is pushed back even further.
What kind of place? That's the fun part. We're finally going to a city, folks! For the past several years we've been in lush jungles, frozen wastelands, volcanic landscapes and so forth. But Red 5's newly energized staff has been working hard on some serious urban landscapes. Think of the kind of vertical level design that can allow with Firefall's trademark jetpacks. Stadiums, skyscrapers, subways, sewers... a city (Chris wouldn't say which city) simply makes a lot of sense in the sort of science fiction setting Firefall employs. It's about time we took the fight against the Chosen there.
Speaking of taking the fight to the Chosen, Chris also let slip that sometime in the next year we just might be going off-world to quite literally take the fight to the Chosen directly. But there wasn't much more to say on that topic just yet.
That's not all that's coming to Firefall soon though. PVP is finally making its long-awaited return, this time without the forced emphasis on eSports. As Chris put it, “If eSports happens organically, it happens. Our main goal is to provide the tools in the game for the players that want it.” With that in mind, with three different PVP modes and maps are coming back for starters. PVP will have its own progression system, its own leaderboards, ranking system, and more. There will, of course, be rewards for those who partake as well.
Journey%202%20concept%202_t.jpg

A new raid is coming in the near future too, and with that will come frame upgrades, and legendary weapons that players will have to craft with components found from around the world. That's one thing Chris helped the team focus on when he joined: the loot side of Firefall. There is a much larger emphasis on loot, finding it, and crafting it these days than there was just a year ago. Chris believes that one of the best parts of MMO gaming is finding new items, and Firefall is now flush with loads of them to uncover.
It may seem like Firefall's been quiet since officially launching. But that's part of the plan. Red 5 and Chris know that Firefall's been a laborious game to make. But it's also been a labor of love for a lot of the people who've been there since the beginning. For a long time, Firefall had trouble figuring out what kind of game it wanted to be.

That time is over. Firefall is an MMO. Red 5 believes in the MMO, they see the genre as the ultimate potential for what a videogame can be: a virtual world where fantasies come to life. Firefall is Red 5's own brand of science fiction fantasy epic, and they can't wait to show us all what's next in the game's long-awaited content updates. As always, we'll be watching and waiting, and playing when the time comes.

Firefall : UPDATE: Employees to be Paid December 30th

Posted Dec 30, 2015 by Suzie Ford

UPDATE: (DEC 30): GOOD NEWS! According to Gamers-Haven.org, Red 5 employees will be paid on December 30th after the company missed last week's payroll deadline. However the same report indicates that "according to reliable source inside the company" several employees were let go last week and, as with layoffs at the end of November, did not receive severance packages.
We are still awaiting comment from Red 5 on these issues, and we have closed the thread and article related to the Facebook spying allegations until further investigation and corroboration can be completed. We are currently in discussions with Red 5 Studios, and await their response to these allegations. We apologize for jumping the gun in our report, and will do better in the future.
(Dec 28): After reaching out to representatives at Red 5, we were told they had no statement or comment to make at this time.
According to a Reddit post and an anonymous tipster, Firefall developer Red 5 Studios has failed to make its latest payroll deadline. According to information we've been sent, current CEO Jun Zhu's share of the company is worth approximately $45M (via 13D disclosure recently filed) but let employees know shortly after that the company would not be able to meet its payroll obligation.
Unnamed "insiders" claim to have received an email in response to inquiries stating:
Hi Team, I regret to inform you that Red5 currently does not have the funds necessary to meet our payroll scheduled for today Friday, December 25. Due to this, there will not be payroll paid this week. Red5 and The9, our parent company, is currently working to resolve this, during the holidays, as soon as possible. We are hopeful we'll be able to resolve this and will update the team immediately.
Stock prices closed out the week:
The9 Limited (NASDAQ:NCTY) opened at 3.55 on Friday. The9 Limited has a 52-week low of $0.90 and a 52-week high of $4.49. The firm’s 50-day moving average price is $3.03 and its 200 day moving average price is $1.72. The firm’s market cap is $82.36 million.
Unsubstantiated sources indicate that the failure to pay employees may be an indication that remaining assets are being sold off and will "forfeit the company on Monday".
At this point, this is all the information available and is subject to confirmation by company sources within Red 5 or parent company The9. We have reached out to representatives and will update this post as we learn more.

Firefall : Red 5 Announces All Employees Have Been 'Paid in Full'

VentureBeat.com has obtained a statement from Red 5 that says that all employees have been paid what they are owed. The statement does not indicate if they were paid on the date expected (December 24th) or, as we reported this morning, earlier today. Regardless, it is good to hear that employees have been paid.
“Red 5 Studios, Inc has paid all employees in full. Recent rumors of Red 5 Studios’ financial situation are not accurate.”

Firefall : The9 CEO Celebrating Chinese Launch by Gifting $1.5M

Posted Jan 03, 2016

To celebrate the launch of Firefall in China, The9 CEO Zhu Jun is gifting players "red packets", up to ten million of them,
contents of which remains unknown though MMOCulture opines that it is not out of the realm of possibility that real world cash will be included.
This news comes closely on the heels of last week's reports of Red 5 employees not being paid on schedule before Christmas, though that situation was resolved on December 30th.

Firefall’s update is live and servers are up, but old characters are still offline

January 22, 2016 13 Comments

The most recent Firefall patch faced some pretty significant downtime due to issues with its implementation; players were updated on the state of the patch yesterday with a full rundown of the technical issues facing the team. The good news is that as of this morning, the game’s servers are online and the patch is running. Bad news? Existing characters aren’t ready for play as the team runs through the remaining issues with character migration. Community manager FadedPez continued to keep players updated:
The update is now live, but without migration. Characters created prior to the start of the maintenance are currently hidden. Don’t worry, they aren’t gone! We’re continuing to work on our migration script. We’re getting really close with it and once it’s completely done and tested we will deploy the script and pre-existing characters will be visible again (with no changes to them). At that point, you may step through your character migration and get back to playing your character.

Firefall updates players on missing items following patch 1.6

February 10, 2016 5 Comments

The most recent Firefall patch had some significant issues when it first went live, but those issues are still being sorted out now. Players were not properly compensated for the modules that they had before the major system update, and the first fix turned out to not work as intended. So the team is trying again, bringing up the pre-maintenance database, running scripts, and awarding players a new set of compensation packages.

Compensation is also planned for epic prototype cores that players previously held. Kanaloa weapons are also not salvaging properly into Titan tokens, so the developers will be awarding tokens to players who owned these weapons while allowing salvage of said weapons for lesser amounts. It’s proven to be a rocky road for the studio getting players back up to speed after the patch; hopefully the latest round of compensatory gestures will settle things for good.

Firefall’s 1.7 patch tomorrow brings Devil’s Tusk zone content, elite ranks overhaul

Firefall’s 1.7 is on the public test server and is due for deployment on the live servers tomorrowday. The big news is the arrival of the Devil’s Tusk zone content refresh and multi-phase world event. The Baneclaw boss fight returns as well with signature weapon drops for all archetypes; optimization work likewise continues, and leftover migration issues are still being investigated.

Perhaps the most significant (and most controversial) addition in 1.7 lands in the form of retroactive experience curve adjustments for elite ranks. Red 5 explains,
“The topic of Elite Ranks has been under discussion since their implementation in Update 1.6. The team has been monitoring system behavior as well as player feedback. Making a big change like this does not come quickly, easily, or lightly. There have been many debates internally on the subject and the team feels that implementing a curve where the amount of XP required per Elite Rank will gradually increase as a battleframe gets further into the system.”

Firefall is coming to PlayStation 4 and mobile platforms

June 18, 2016 18 Comments

We won’t lie: We’ve been a little concerned for the future of Firefall over the past year. But if the dev team has anything to say about it, the game is either going to go down swinging or emerge triumphant for a new generation.

Firefall recently announced that it is preparing at least two new versions of the game, one for the PlayStation 4 and one for mobile: “Red 5 Studios cherishes the Firefall IP and we are continuing to make the game in the best way that we can. Additionally we are working to bring the IP to other platforms such as PlayStation 4 and mobile.”
There are no details yet as to when and how Firefall will make the transition to console and mobile, but it’s certainly interesting that plans are in the works for it, don’t you think?Read more
