Florida's stand your ground defense used to shoot SUV full of loud teens

I think I would have preferred the word "some". :woot:

But I don't think it's that "many" gun owners perceive danger when it's convenient. I think that people who purchase guns today are already scared. That's why I suggest taking a thorough self-inventory before purchasing. The person needs to ask themselves why they are buying the gun and what reason would they have to use it. Also if a gun is the right form of protection for their given situation. These questions should be revisited for current gun owners.
That is a very good way of putting it, and why it is a problem. We are depending on scared people to be self-aware enough to not put themselves in such a position. And this is why people are dying for no real reason.

Well...I'm not even sure in this case what's going on. I am not all that familiar with SYG laws in FL, but I'm curious to the laws for carrying a weapon there. Things are much more strict in my state. It seems odd to me that the man could legally keep a loaded firearm in his glove compartment.

There have also been instances of people walking out of an argument in a public place to go get their gun to come back for their opposing argument.

Some people just can't handle being told they're wrong. And some of them go get their gun and shoot the place up.

But hey, let's not generalize all of these "responsible gun owners," until they get caught being irresponsible. Too bad people have to die to find out which gun owners are irresponsible.

I'm all for the second amendment and castle doctrine, but this law needs to go.

Defending your home is one thing. Pretending this is the wild west is another.

People who get conceal and carry need strict psych evaluations.

Funny, the NRA is all for profiling...certain groups. Who look different...'merica.

NRA's a bunch of lunatics. I've been a lifelong gun owner...I want nothing to do with the NRA.

You'd be surprised.

I think it's like 80% of gun owners favor background checks.

Well..most legal gun owners, and/or those legally eligible don't really have anything to hide that a background check would uncover and hence prevent them from buying a gun. There's no reason not to favor it.

Waiting periods, purchase limits, overtaxation, format limitations, magazine and pistol grip bans, etc. on the other hand......

You are a rarity.
I like to think I have at least some sensibility. And I'm not a big fan of politics.

Found guilty of the four lesser changes, including 3 counts of attempted murder in the second degree. A mistrial on the murder charge. He is looking at the rest of his life in jail, which is good. But Jordan Davis' family still doesn't get their justice.

Of course the family didn't get justice, the victim was a black male. A lot of jurors will always believe the murderer of black young males if they are white or indenify as white. This scumbag guy still got away with murder. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets probation for the lesser charges he was convicted of.

I wouldn't live in Florida if it were the last place on earth.

Not going to happen. Mandatory sentence of 20 years for attempted murder. He is going to get 20 years apiece for the attempted murder charges. And a legal analyst on CNN just said they must run consecutively.

So he is looking at least at 60 years, plus another possible 15 years for the gun charge.

Still ********.

Okay, I believe you, I was just bitterly ranting. He lied about there being a gun and eventhough no gun was found the jury still believed his b.s. That infuriates me to know end.

I don't blame you one bit. This is beyond ridiculous. He goes from, "I saw a gun", to, "maybe it was stick", to, "I know I saw a gun". Obviously lying. For me nothing was more telling then his fiance. Never told he about a weapon, didn't discuss the fact that there were gunshots while she was in the store, drove 40 minutes and had pizza.

Shot at the van 10 times. Got out so he could keep shooting as they tried to get away from him. Didn't mention a thing. And clearly a racist. All you have to do is read his jail house letters. It is all there.

I will say one thing though. I can see there being a split on first and second degree. A situation where they couldn't decide on premeditation. That is the best we could possibly hope for.

I knew. Florida, you guys never cease to amaze. Everything but first degree murder this guy gets.

This thug will never be a menace to polite society again. Good riddance.

Watching coverage right now. The prosecutor just said that you can get up to 30 years for attempted murder, with a 20 year minimum mandatory. So yeah, gone for good.

But yeah, still not a murder, at least not in Florida. Great state.

yeah..I'm confused. The jury's all convinced he was attempting to murder people in the van by shooting multiple times at the van...one in the van died...there was no gun or credible evidence of any self-defense (if there were why would you convict on attempted murder)...but no murder conviction. I really hope it wasn't 2nd vs 1st degree that hung the jury. As long as he gets murder..who cares. What was going on the dissenting jury's mind...

The jury had no black men...only 2 black women out of 12...
4 white women and 4 white men. Prosecution?

Great technical victory...but moral one? nope.
