For those of you working in your 20's

In the UK we've got an increasing amount of pensioners (cos they aren't dying as easily as they used to), so the State Pension is suffering. The more old people we have, the less you'll receive per week so I would suggest not relying on that, but setting up personal or company ones in addition.

If you start full time employment at 18, there's no reason why you can't start contributing to a pension fund. All companies should have some sort of pension scheme set up, and if and when you leave that job, the money can be transferred to the new fund. Even if you pay in a small amount, it'll build up over the next 50 years.

I've had an IRA since I was 19

That is awesome.

I myself have been real dumb with my money, and I am in the process of resolving that issue as we speak...to actually plan better for the future.

I have a company one, which is also joint government, since I work for the government. Whatever I put into my pension, they match it.

this is some great advice. Now all I need to do is graduate from med school and get a job. Then I guess I can invest once I start earning.

Well this is all nice and grand. You know, money for the future and all. Me I'm looking to find enough money to live independantly now. Never on my wages could I save £1000 a month. I barely make that at all a month.

Not to mention the astronomical price of houses in the UK :down

All I can say to that is:

"Eat, drink, and be merry; for tomorrow we die."

"Cross that bridge when you get to it."

"Live for the present, die for the future!"

"Pass 'GO' collect $200."

If you plan on dying young, sure. I actually don't, though. You'll change your mind when you get older and suddenly find your priorities have changed.

I'm also on the powerball plan.

Too bad I know someone who won the lottery...that pretty much means I am screwed...cant win it because I know someone that actually did win it.

I plan on being broke and homeless.

^It would be funnier if Mr. Belding was the one giving it.

Greetings all.

I have some words of Wisdom.
If you are 20-25 and working, please make sure to start putting money towards your retirement. You may not believe that you dont need to now, but the more you do now, the more you have later on.

I am not an expert in this....this is more just a little Public Service Announcement.

The big issue in investing to prepare for retirement thru IRAs....Roth IRAs...ect..
Is TIME.

The earlier you invest, the better.

Thanks for the advice Malice. I have an IRA already

I'd love to start saving some money, but as it is right now, I need most of it to eat and pay rent.

Pshhhh...I spend my extra money on hookers and booze.

I'm 24 and I started putting money towards my 401k 2 years ago.
