Jamie Foxx is in final negotiations to star opposite Gerard Butler in Law Abiding Citizen, a psychological thriller that Frank Darabont is directing for the Film Department, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Written by Kurt Wimmer and Darabont, the script follows a successful assistant D.A. (Butler) who finds himself at the center of a vigilante plot hatched by a traumatized victim of the legal system (Foxx). Foxx's character is devastated to learn that, because of a plea bargain, one of his wife and daughter's murderers will be set free. So he unleashes revenge on the killers and those who made the deal.

Butler and his Evil Twin partner Alan Siegel are producing along with Warp Films' Lucas Foster. Film Department's Mark Gill also is producing.

Executive producing are Film Department's Robert Katz and Neil Sacker.

Oooo This sounds promising.

Beat me to it.....it does sound good. Big fan of Darabont.

Sounds good. Love Kurt Wimmers work, Foxx and Butler should make for some good on screen chemsitry.

Ain't-It-Cool-News reports that director Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption) has left the Law Abiding Citizen production.

The psychological thriller follows a successful assistant D.A. (Gerard Butler) who finds himself at the center of a vigilante plot hatched by a traumatized victim of the legal system (Jamie Foxx). Foxx's character is devastated to learn that, because of a plea bargain, one of his wife and daughter's murderers will be set free. So he unleashes revenge on the killers and those who made the deal.

There's no word yet on who might replace him and how this affects the filming.

F. Gary Gray Takes Over Law Abiding Citizen
Source: Variety
October 16, 2008

Variety says that director F. Gary Gray is leaving one film and signing on for another.

On Thursday, he pulled out of plans to direct Eric Bana in Armored for Millennium Films. While it appeared that Gray would be replaced, Millennium Films' Avi Lerner told the trade that the film is now dead.

Meanwhile, Gray is negotiating to replace Frank Darabont as director of Law Abiding Citizen, a drama that begins production in Philadelphia this December with Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx starring.

Foxx will play a lawyer who finds himself in the center of a vigilante plot hatched by a traumatized victim of the legal system. Butler plays the vigilante. Kurt Wimmer wrote the script with Darabont.

Not sure about this....I preferred Darabont. Gray is very hit or miss (Italian Job to Be Cool). At least there filming in Philly.

Gray missed the mark with 'Be Cool'. His other movies were okay at best. So I don't expect a whole lot with "Law Abiding Citizen"

Wasn't he the director of 'The Negotiator' ?

I actually thought that was good thriller.

The Negotiator is an excellent thriller.

Not watched it in a while...

Four Board Law Abiding Citizen
Source: The Hollywood Reporter
January 5, 2009

The Hollywood Reporter says Michael Gambon ("Harry Potter" films), Leslie Bibb, Colm Meaney and Theresa Randle have come aboard the Film Department thriller Law Abiding Citizen. Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx already have been cast in the F. Gary Gray-directed vigilante movie.

The Longest Yard screenwriter Sheldon Turner recently came on to do production work on the script as the film moves toward its Jan. 21 start date in Philadelphia.

Butler, Alan Siegel, Lucas Foster and Mark Gill are producing; Neil Sacker and Robert Katz are executive producing.

"Citizen" is set in motion when a district attorney orchestrates a plea bargain that sets free the killers of another man's family. The aggrieved victim then seeks personal justice from the D.A.

Writers Kurt Wimmer (The Recruit), David Ayer (Harsh Times) and Frank Darabont (The Mist), who was once in line to direct "Citizen," have worked on the script.

Hmmm, when I first saw the thread's title I really thought it was about the untitled rom-com about Butler playing a bounty hunter sent out to retrieve his ex-wife.

The plot does look like it's taken directly from an episode of The Practice.

Trailer

First 30 seconds and I was "Meh, seen this before" then it turned really interesting, looking forward to it.

This looks interesting

So, based on the trailer it looks like the movie starts out as nothing special and then switches gears when Butler becomes a psychotic villain. Definitely way more interesting than a standard revenge flick. But I'm uneasy about what look like Saw-ish torture scenes. They're almost always gratuitous in movies like this and end up being more reprehensible than cathartic.
