It was a failed attempt at humor. I find that picture truly disturbing, and I think I'd rather have gamecube graphics than see Mario like that.

If you blur your vision it looks almost tolerable... But seriously, why did they make him look like a 58 year old garbage man who hides in the bushes outside of an elementary school?

Honestly, this is why we don't need these characters updated in a more "mature" fashion. Nintendo's mascots look just fine in their cartoony glory. None of that Marcus Fenix ****. I wonder if this is how they're going to do Tintin.
