Nintendo’s latest Paper Mario: Color Splash trailer takes us through Prism island with the Rescue V Toad squad as our guides. Rescue Red uses this episode to show off the abilities of the Rescue Purple squad. When there’s an area out of Mario’s reach, the Purple Toads can be used as a ladder. In the video’s example, Mario climbs up the Toads to reach a fire extinguisher, which he then uses in a fiery fight with Morton Koopa Jr.

Paper Mario: Color Splash Rescue V Episode 3 Stars Blue Toads . August 30, 2016 . 9:00am

Paper Mario: Color Splash’s third Rescue V trailer introduces us to the Blue Toads and their sneaky habits.

In Paper Mario: Color Splash, Mario is able to call upon groups of Toads to aid him in his adventure. Each color has its own specialty, and the Rescue V series of trailers is dedicating an installment to each one. Last time, we saw Mario use Purple Toads as staircases, and this third episode shows how Blue Toads can sneak and find their way into any location.

This Paper Mario: Color Splash trailer gives an idea of what Blue Toads can do. In one part, a Blue Toad is hiding under a cardboard box to remain unseen. In another, he’s in a locker with some coffee.

Paper Mario: Color Splash Draws Inspiration From Previous Installments . October 4, 2016 . 12:00pm

Paper Mario: Color Splash doesn’t just pull concepts and ideas from Paper Mario: Sticker Star. It also references Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door and Super Paper Mario.

47 comments Read >

Paper Mario: Color Splash is one of those games that looks to the past to help shape the future. Everywhere you look, it’s referencing previous entries in the series, employing nostalgia to create clever callbacks, and using things that worked in the past in new ways. It may most obviously resemble Paper Mario: Sticker Star, but there’s plenty of other references there too.

The writing in Paper Mario: Color Splash has the same clever writing and snappy, self-referential quips as many games in the series. Characters are self aware and break the wall, just as they did going all the way back to the original Paper Mario on the Nintendo 64. They show an awareness and insight of their roles that’s a series trademark. Their remarks are snappy and insightful, . In one of her first lines introducing Mario, Peach says, “And this is my… friend Mario. He jumps on things and hits them with a hammer when necessary.” When Huey gives Mario the ability to bring color back to the world, he says, “The paint you just absorbed is basically my blood, sweat, and tears. You’ll have time to shower later.”

Its introduction even is a callback to one of the best games in the series. Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door began with a letter. Peach summoned Mario to Rogueport, packing a map inside to initiate adventures. Paper Mario: Color Splash begins in a similar manner. A colorless toad has been mailed to Peach, and Mario, Peach, and Toad head to Port Prisma to investigate the situation. It prepares you for the adventure in the same way the earlier game did, giving you a hub to rely on and leading you to a bigger mystery with a simple start. Port Prisma itself is very similar to Rogueport in layout and offerings, with the same

But, let’s go back to Huey. He shows how Paper Mario: Color Splash never shies away from a pun. I mean, the paint can assistant is named Huey. When he’s introducing Mario to concepts, he says he’ll give him a primer. He is a repository of clever quips that are often a stroke of genius. It made me want to brush up on my own art-related puns, because because he kept thinking of ones that were pure genius.

He’s also a callback to both Super Paper Mario and Paper Mario: Sticker Star. Huey is an omnipresent ally, like Tippi the Pixl or Kersti the sticker fairy, with abilities that allow Mario to alter the world around him. Mario’s hammer slams paint onto barren spaces, bringing color back, thanks to his new friend. He even introduces you to reality-altering abilities. One of the earliest ones lets you cut out part of the background background to reach otherwise inaccessible areas or unveil some sort of secret for coins. An ability similar to Super Paper Mario’s flip makes a comeback, altering your viewpoint and perspective.

Paper Mario: Color Splash’s battle system directly references Paper Mario: Sticker Star, only with cards that are liberally doled out and affordable in shops in place of more limited stickers. At the start of your turn, you pick out one or more stickers, depending on how many slots you have open, then choose how much paint to apply to blank cards to power them up. Once you flick the cards back up to Mario to trigger his actions, you again perform each ability in time, pressing the A button to hopefully trigger additional or more powerful attacks. Other alterations include the deck size gradually increasing to allow you to stockpile more cards and a paint stockpile that grows larger after collecting hammer pieces from defeated enemies.

It’s easy to look at early Paper Mario: Color Splash screenshots and footage and point out all the ways it resembles Paper Mario: Sticker Star. Because it does. The battle system and environmental interactions are directly inspired by the previous game. But, it also references many other Paper Mario games. It has a localization and script that calls to mind previous games, with an introduction that greatly resembles Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door. It has some reality-tweaking abilities like Super Paper Mario. It references games we’ve loved in natural ways.

Paper Mario: Color Splash will come to the Nintendo Wii U on October 7, 2016.

Resource Management Is Never An Issue In Paper Mario: Color Splashi . October 6, 2016 . 12:00pm

Even though you’ll often need to use cards, coins, and paint in Paper Mario: Color Splash, you’ll probably never run out of any of those things.

6 comments Read >

When I play RPGs, I’m an ability and item hoarder. My mages are forced to rely on physical attacks. I’ll revisit a nearby town and become the inn’s most frequent customer, rather than resort to elixirs and phoenix downs. I’m afraid if I use these items early, they won’t be there when I absolutely need them. Paper Mario: Color Splash is one of the few games where I’ve felt like it’s okay. I can go all out, because I’m never going to run out of the things I need.
Paint is Paper Mario: Color Splash’s lifeblood, both metaphorically and literally. Mario needs paint to bring life back to Toads sucked dry, repaint places and things so he can use them and proceed through the world, and battle. Fortunately, it’s doled out liberally. Most items in the world can be struck to get paint drops. Trees give green drops that refill the blue and yellow gauges. Trash cans give rainbow drops that refill everything. Even items that get squished after you smash them return to their natural states after a few moments, ready for harvesting again. Enemies drop paint when they’re defeated. Rainbow drops of paint fall on Mario once an area is completed. And, naturally, Prisma Port’s rainbow paint fountain is eventually restored.

Keeping Mario’s hammer filled with paint isn’t too difficult either. Paper Mario: Color Splash starts by letting you hold a maximum of 100 paint drops, a number that increases as you defeat enemies and collect hammer pieces. Even if you avoid enemies as much as possible, which is absolutely an option since it isn’t like Mario gains experience, all the opportunities to refill means about 200-300 max paint is more than enough to get through an area.

Paper Mario: Color Splash’s cards are the second resource you need to manage. Very early in the game, you get a deck upgrade that allows you to carry up to 99 cards. That is an ample amount of cards and enough to get you through most situations. Especially since the game is always finding excuses to give you free cards. Hit a question block? Here’s a card! Fill in an empty part in the environment? This card’s for you! Find a secret area? More cards for Mario the card king! Whether they’re painted or not, they’re always a helpful addition to your roster. Restocking is easy, since they’re for sale for affordable prices in town. Even with Kamek occasionally making a nuisance of himself and hiding which one you’re using so you’re wasting them, it isn’t the end of the world. (Annoying, yet, but it’s not the worst.) Even running out of cards completely during a fight is okay, because you can just buy one card each turn for 10 coins.

Which you can always afford, because Mario will never go broke. Within the first two hours of Paper Mario: Color Splash, I’d earned over 1,000 coins. I doubled it after reaching the first Roshambo temple. Since there’s no equipment and cards are so easily acquired, you’re always going to have a surplus of funds. Sometimes, I’d throw money away on the best cards, all because I could afford to do so. Which I’d then never use, because we’ve already established that I’m the sort of person who has to keep those really great cards just in case. (I’d rather use worn out items and basic boots and hammers forever!)

The only time I ever felt like I was wasting anything was during nonessential Paper Mario: Color Splash battles. There’s a flee option. You have to spend paint to try to make an escape attempt. Note that I said try. Even though all of these basic battles are pointless busywork, there’s a chance Mario will trip as he flees, forcing you to just take damage from some of the enemies as a punishment for trying to stop wasting time on an unnecessary fight.

When you play Paper Mario: Color Splash, you don’t really have to worry about Mario running out of cards, coins, and paint. The game goes out of its way to make sure you’ve always got the resources you need. You can afford the things you need. You can paint anything you’d like. You can use cards without worrying about running out when the going gets tough. Ample resources are always available, which gives you the freedom to do almost anything you’d like.

Paper Mario: Color Splash will come to the Nintendo Wii U on October 7, 2016.

Color Splash Producer Wants Next Paper Mario To Have A Different Gameplay System. December 19, 2016 . 8:30am

The producer of Color Splash acknowledged the lack of original characters in the game and said, if given the chance to continue the Paper Mario series, he would want to create a “different system.”

57 comments Read >

20161219_024701_thumb.png

Super Mario: Color Splash came out back in October for the Wii U, and many fans of the series noted the game’s lack of original characters, considering the majority of the game’s characters were Toads.

Color Splash’s producer Kensuke Tanabe recently spoke with Game Informer, and one of the very first questions asked in the interview was why none of the characters from earlier Paper Mario games had made it into Color Splash.
“Mario is not an IP that I created. From the position of someone borrowing the IP, I think it’s only natural to show respect to the person who created it, and let that feeling of respect guide us. When Miyamoto-san, the father of Mario, asks us, ‘Could you make a game with only characters from the Mario family?’ I think it’s only natural for us to give it our best shot. In other words, we are not currently thinking about returning to old NPCs.
Incidentally, I do think Color Splash may have proven that we can still make a game entertaining, even if our original characters don’t appear as NPCs. And with that belief, we will keep on continuing to do our best.”

Additionally, when asked if sidekick characters with their own abilities would ever return to the series, Tanabe said the following, noting that he would like to feature a new system should they create another Paper Mario game in the future:
“Personally, I don’t give much thought to how we are leaving old methods behind in any series, not just Paper Mario. I always prioritize thinking about how we can build new methods and new elements. Of course, there were some series where we have not made big changes to the systems, but sometimes that’s because we feel as though these systems haven’t been perfected yet, or the gameplay can be expanded even further. We felt both of those things in Color Splash. However, I do feel as though we reached the end of where Color Splash is headed, so if we get the chance to continue the series, I think we’ll want to create a Paper Mario with a different system.”
Paper Mario: Color Splash is available for the Wii U.
