Funeral songs

My mom has told me she want's "There's a River" by Steve Winwood played during her funeral. Miami Vice fans should recognize that song as the one that played when Larry was found dead.

I've heard it....it IS sad and pretty appropriate.

Myself...I have my choices but I find it doubtful that a funeral home would play metal during a service.

My Picks-

1) A Tout Le Monde- Megadeth. I've been told this is a suicide song but I've never felt that way about it. I've always felt that it was about a guy who was terminally ill and finally accepted his fate and wrote a note to his family/friends to tell them that everything would be ok because he'd accepted what was gonna happen to him.

2) Watching Over Me -Iced Earth. I find this one uplifting and cheery despite the fact that it's about a guy dying. Dude's death was tragic and horrible, but the singer believes his dead friend is still hanging aroud, looking out for him. Whatever you may believe about the afterlife, that's pretty positive ****. I like the idea that our friends sould come back and watch our backs. I know I would if I could.

3) This one's totally up for grabs. I'd love for something like Weird Al's "Dare To Be Stupid". I've been to my fair share of funerals and they are always ultra-serious affairs. I won't be around for my funeral but to me it's about "honoring the guy who died" and I wouldn't haunt anyone who added a few laughs during my funeral. I love a good joke and wouldn't mind being honored that way.

at my nephew's funeral, this was one of the songs they played.

Angel Standing By- by Jewel

lyrics:
"Angel Standing By"

All through the night I'll be watching over you
And all through the night I'll be standing over you
And through bad dreams I'll be right there baby
telling you everything's going to be alright
When you cry I'll be there baby
telling you were never nothing less than beautiful
So don't you worry
I'm you Angel standing by

Well, I'm not a fan of metal. Though I like what some would consider metal. Though, most of it is hard rock to me. In fact most of what I consider Hard Rock is pretty much metal that doesn't suck.

I like "real metal" Pantera, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Alice in Chains, Metallica. This new ****, Cradle of Filth, Sacred Reich and assorted excrement is just goth ****.

nothing wrong with a little 2nd generation metal...

Yeah, I'm a Sabbath fan as well as sort of Alice in Chains. Metallica, I can tolarate. But yeah, most new stuff of anything is bad. I was analyzing the differences between old and new music and I found that most of the stuff that gave old music its charm is all but gone in the modern scene.

Vince Gill's song "Go Rest High On That Mountain" has pretty much been played at all of my relatives funerals who have died in recent years. It's a great song but it doesn't fit women very well at all. Simply revising the "Son Your Work On Earth Is Done" part to "Child Your Work On Earth Is Done" would make it more universal to use for both male & female.

I know your life
On earth was troubled
And only you could know the pain
You weren't afraid to face the devil
You were no stranger to the rain

Go rest high on that mountain
Son, you work on earth is done
Go to heaven a shoutin'
Love for the Father and Son

Oh, how we cried the day you left us
We gathered round your grave to grieve
I wish I could see the angels faces
When they hear your sweet voice sing

Go rest high on that mountain
Son, you work on earth is done
Go to heaven a shoutin'
Love for the Father and Son

That was my interpretation of it as well, and a good choice. I would consider it as well. My other choices.

1."Blaze Of Glory" Jon Bon Jovi

2."Cemetary Gates" Pantera is a good choice as well.

Modest Mouse - Satin in a Coffin.

You were laying on the carpet
Like you're satin in a coffin
You said, "Do you believe what you're sayin'?"
Yeah right now, but not that often
Are you dead or are you sleepin'?
Are you dead or are you sleepin'?
Are you dead or are you sleepin'?
God I sure hope you are dead

Well you disappeared so often
Like you dissolved into coffee
Are you here right now or are there
Probably fossils under your meat?
Are you dead or are you sleepin'?
Are you dead or are you sleepin'?
Are you dead or are you sleepin'?
God I sure hope you are dead

Now the blow's been softened, since the air we breathe's our coffin
Well now the blow's been softened, since the ocean is our coffin
Often times you know our laughter is our coffin ever after
And you know the blow's been softened, since the world is our coffin
And now the blow's been softened, since we are our own damn coffins
Well everybody's talkin' 'bout their short lists
Everybody's talkin' 'bout DEATH!

You were laying on the carpet
Like you're satin in a coffin
You said, "Do you believe what you're sayin'?"
Yeah right now, but not that often
Are you dead or are you sleepin'?
Are you dead or are you sleepin'?
Are you dead or are you sleepin'?
God I sure hope you are dead

"Always look on the bright side of life"

Hooked on a Feeling - David Hasselhoff

If they could play the music video, that would be just dandy.
