Game Awards 2018

Agreed.

Btw, I definitely think Red Dead 2 deserved it more than God of War, but thats just my opinion. Both games are great, but it gets annoying seeing people in the comments say the most ignorant s*** like "Red Dead is more of a movie than a game". No.....it's a beautifully well told video game that takes its time and fleshes everything out. it's master crafted in every way
That's always been a dumb criticism, and you could easily apply it to GoW as well. They're both cutscene-heavy games.

God of War deserved its award, though Spider-Man getting absolutely NOTHING felt wrong. I would've given it Best Performance or Best Sound Design, at least.

My highlights of the night were Persona 5's Joker as Smash Bros DLC and the Psychonauts 2 trailer. I'm still iffy about Ultimate Alliance 3, which is a bummer.

Apparently Rockstar walked out when they didn't win game of the year. I am curious if the reports get validated.

I doubt it's true, but super petty if it is, especially considering Red Dead still got A LOT of awards.

Exactly!

I still wish Red Dead 2 had won. BUT, atleast it wasn't fortnite haha
GoW was deserving of its win. Its been a long time since I played a game and felt it was near perfect but GoW did everything right. I really have no complaints about that game or ways it could be improved as any gripes I may have had were too insginifcant to affect my overall experience. RDR2 is a good game but it has alot more issues that IMO do take away from the experience than GoW. Nothing about RDR2 is what I would say is near perfect.

Technically God of War has no cutscenes. It's all one long take from start to finish.

My issues with Red Dead would have more to do with how tedious the gameplay can be, then anything else. But in terms of character and story, God of War might be my favorite game.

To each their own, but how is RDR2 not near perfect in any way?? Im genuinely curious as to the reason behind such a statement because that's a bold claim that the vast majority don't agree with judging by the critical and general audience response. Not to mention the game having a 10/10 almost across the board, and the highest rated PS4 game ever on metacritic as another sign of what people think.

The controls are pretty bad. Hell, the controls in RDR1 are better, and those are even dated. I just replayed RDR1 about 4-5 months ago to prep for RDR2, and I was thinking about how cumbersome the controls felt, and that I was excited for RDR2, because I was certain they would've polished everything up. I had no idea that controls and overall core gameplay would've been worse. RDR2 is a great experience, but as far as the core mechanics go, they have a lot to be desired.

As for the Game Awards, I was glad to see GoW get it. I thought it was a much better experience all around, both in terms of gameplay and story.

IDA with this bc the response Ive read and heard from many critics have commented on in regards to RDR2 was that it was overrated and didnt live up to the hype. Review score isnt everything. RDR2 seems to have more people divided whereas GoW was almost universally praised from the same outlets I follow.

I actually just got to Chapter 3 in the game so I still have quite a way to go but the game is VERY tedious and slow. There are too many mundane things it task you to do that slow down the pace fundamentally make it less entertaining. The moment to moment gameplay of this game is not fun as I find myself just mindlessly on the horse all the time to get to the next destination and the weak sauce "fast travel" doesnt help.

The combat is not good. The shooting is passable but there are so many other cover based third person shooters that do it better and make RDR2 feel archaic in comparison. The hand to hand combat is even worse. The series has not improved that much in this area in the 8 years since the last game. The controls are downright awful at times as I find myself doing the wrong action bc of the confusing way the controls are laid out. Animation could use some work here too. As combat goes, it definitely does not hold a candle to the fluidity of GoW.

Im on a regular PS4 and I don’t think the graphics are that impressive. The scenario and open environment for sure but the character models are not among the best in the business. Again since this was GOTY, GoW does it better here as well. That was the best looking game in the category. RDR2 was not.

Im still playing the game and enjoying it but it does not feel perfect to me. Few games do but even at this early stage, I can tell its not going to overhtrow the sheer joy I had with GoW earlier this year. How can I improve GoW? I cant really think of many ways but Im already compiling a list in my head of how RDR2 misses the mark and could be made a better game

I share the same thoughts.

I'm still trying to complete chapter 2, but it's not like I'm eager to see what's gonna happen next, though. With GoW I simply didn't want to put the controller down. I HAD to know what the next mission would unveal and was having too much fun exploring and fighting my way through since the start. My enjoyment came from the excellent combination of story and gameplay.

I keep hoping that the story in RDR2 is gonna take a turn and become irresistible, but even if it does, the gameplay isn't doing it any favors. I can't stop thinking that this game was way overhyped and that I shouldn't have paid what I did to get it.

Was so glad to see GoW win game of the year.

Not anything against Red Dead 2 (haven't played it yet personally, getting it at Christmas)

But God of War is honestly now one of my favourite games of all time now which is crazy when I went in thinking there's no way I will like it more than number 3.

I think the thing with RDR2 is you need to like immersion. I loved the game, but I also enjoyed the immersion. I liked staring at beautiful sunsets, methodically hunting animals, playing rounds of Blackjack. All for small payouts.

Some gamers just want instant payout. Nothing wrong with that. I can see if you're not, how RDR 2 would be tedious. The story was beautiful as well. But if you're just wanting to charge through the game, you may not build that bond with the gang.

I do agree though, I'm happy GoW won. As much as I liked RDR2, GoW was just better, to me. It doesn't take away from RDR 2 at all. Both games will stick with me for awhile.

Who I really feel bad for is Spiderman. A GOTY contender any other year. It just happened to come out against two other amazing games this year. Kinda like Persona 5, and Horizon ZD going against Zelda BoTW. While I liked both Persona 5, and Horizon better, Zelda was obviously coming out on top.

Visually RDR2 is perfect. I don't think anything beats it graphically. I think it's story and characters are on par or better than GoW. I mean Kratos is a bad ass but Arthur Morgan is just a different level. Never has a video game character been more compelling and believable as an actual person. I damn near cried at the end.

But... and it's a big but... RDR2 has some archaic and clunky ass gameplay mechanics. Unbelievable really considering how polished every thing else is. GoW is a bit button mashy but it's some of the smoothest and most fun gameplay ever.

I think RDR2 is undoubtedly the more ambitious and innovative game, with probably the most real world a game has ever had. But GoW executes what it goes for with unparalleled accuracy, has probably the best combat gameplay ever and a great story. So I can see arguments for both being Game of the Year.

Why would you want to fast travel through that world though? It's designed the way it is because it wants the player to be immersed into the world. Absorb the vistas, see the actual fully working animal eco systems, have random encounters etc.

When you're riding along then all of a sudden get bushwacked by Lemoyne Raiders or lured into a trap by Murfree folk... is when the world comes alive. Or when you're chilling out and fishing on the river, then see a Hawk swoop down and pluck a salmon from the water. Or hunting deer with your binoculars only to see it being stalked and killed by a cougar.

The level of detail and immersion is unparalled by anything. It just kinda confuses me when people moan about the game being slow paced and encouraging the player to breathe.

Plus there are forms of fast travel. They're just part of the immersion too. You get a train or stage coach. Not a teleporter.

I mean technically RDR2 isn't an RPG. But it pissed over pretty much all RPGs I've played on a console. Sometimes I wake up in camp, have breakfast, have a little chat with people. Then go hunting for an hour or so. Bring back some food for the camp. Then shoot into town, buy some ammo. Get my hair cut. Go into the saloon. Eat lunch. Have some beers. Play some poker. Go back to camp. Have dinner. Drink some more. Go to bed.

I mean if that isn't role playing... what is?

Bc the map is pretty damn big. I actually havent needed to fast travel yet bc Im still early on and dont have the whole map unlocked but I got a glimpse of it playing online and I can see that annoying when I do finish the story and have to do clean up with the side quests and collectibles. Games of this magnitude in 2018 should have more efficient fast travel

RDR2 isnt an RPG but in many way it likens itself to one without fully committing to that. You love it and think its near perfect, good for you, but you asked me why I feel it isnt and Ive presented my case

You can fast travel though. You can upgrade Arthur's tent to give you that ability. Or get a train or stage coach. The option is there.

And don't get me wrong, I respect your criticisms and opinions. I just kinda find it baffling when people say they don't like riding around on a horse or that it's too "non linear". To me that's like criticising God of War for being too fast paced and having too many blockbuster set pieces.

These are the STRENGTHS of their perspective games.

Thats just one aspect of the game and one I admitted I havent had to contend with yet. I made a long post criticizing other aspects of the game which are IMO bigger issues like the controls and shooting mechanics which work against me as a player and have not been improved all that much since the last game. I cant ignore or overlook that when a good portion of the game's gameplay relies on that

That's about how I see it. Mechanically GoW plays better. It's fine-tuned in just about every way for a focused and intimate experience. It's not really trying to innovate and it doesn't have to (other than the seamless gameplay to cutscene transitions which should become industry standard). RDR2 feels like a major step forward for open world games and is a true epic. Not since Skyrim have I played a game with a world that felt as big and alive and it's anchored by a narrative that resonated with me deeply. It has flaws certainly, ones you won't find in GoW, but I'm willing to be more forgiving on them in lieu of what it does so well. It's apples and oranges in a sense. And they're both great games so it's no one's loss.

This is a good debate to have as gamers. I was fine with either game winning GoTY. I had my prefernce, but both were good choices. Well, I don't care for the game awards show that much, it's been cringey lately.

However, having that many games, all having good arguments for GoTY. It's never a bad thing. The main complaint should be coming from your wallet, and personal time/life. That 3 GoTY contenders can come out so close to each other.
