The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences is pleased to announce nominations for the 16th Annual D.I.C.E. Awards (#DICEAwards), the industry’s premier peer-based Awards show. The Academy also revealed self-proclaimed nerd and video game enthusiast Chris Hardwick, founder of Nerdist.com and host of his own Comedy Central stand-up special, AMC’s Talking Dead, and newly announced BBC America’s The Nerdist, will serve as this year’s host.

Showcasing the breadth and depth of an incredible year of games, 63 games representing console to web-based to mobile, received D.I.C.E. Award nominations. Leading the nominations is Journey with 11 nominations, including Game of the Year. Rounding out the Game of the Year nominations are: Borderlands 2, Far Cry 3, The Walking Dead, and XCOM: Enemy Unknown. Several titles earned multiple nods, including The Walking Dead with eight nominations, Far Cry 3 with seven, Halo 4 with six, and Borderlands 2 and Dishonored both receiving five each.
The awards ceremony will take place on Thursday, February 7th at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Las Vegas during the 2013 D.I.C.E. (Design, Innovate, Communicate, Entertain) Summit (#DICE2013). The AIAS, in collaboration with media partner Variety, will live stream the Awards on Machinima in its entirety at 7:30pm PT / 10:30pm ET.

"The D.I.C.E. Awards are VERY important to me,” said Hardwick. “I have been playing video games since there were video games. I hope there is some type of Dovahkiin Shout that will make sure I don't mess this up. I will find one! If not, I'll just look like a psychotic, screaming a**hole leading up to the Awards."

Man was this a weak year in gaming, just looking at that. Seems light on categories but based on that, I would go with:

Game of the Year
The Walking Dead. Only bc Ive only played two of the nominees and this was the better of the two (Journey being the other)

Outstanding Achievement in Game Direction
The Unfinished Swan

Outstanding Innovation in Gaming
Sound Shapes

Action Game of the Year
Sleeping Dogs

Adventure Game of the Year
The Walking Dead

Mobile Game of the Year
Rayman Jungle Run. I got this free from a Starbucks promo and its REALLY fun.

Come oooooon X-Com! You can do it!

I predict Journey and TWD taking most of the awards, since they have everywhere else this year. I think the industry is looking to heap as much praise as possible on games that think outside of the same ol' same ol' killbox.

I would love for XCOM to win, bit I think it's going to be Journey or The Walking Dead. This was a big year for "emotional" games.

IA but I hope they also take notice of Sound Shapes and the Unfinished Swan, both of which are unique gems no one are talking about

I feel like Spec Ops: The Line has been shafted a fair bit when it comes to this year's GOTY awards. It might not have the production values of FC3 or Halo 4 but it's certainly a better experience than either.

Couldnt agree more man. Also there are more categories, those are just the "main" ones.

I agree as well. 2012 wasn't the best. Everyone focused on next generation I guess.

Yea i think that would make for a good argument as to the weaker lineup we saw. I felt there were some really good titles tho, just didnt seem to me like they were as numerous as they were last year. Im honestly not expecting much different this year either, looking at my anticipated games list, its fairly small with very few titles im super excited about.

I'm looking forward to a few games this year but once GTA V comes out my entire year is pretty much going to be dominated by that.

thats bc it goes back to his point that everyone is focused on next gen. All the games that are announced will be released in the first half of the year with little to no news of whats to come this fall. Publishers are clearly waiting on MS and Sony to make their official reveals of the new consoles before they can start making their announcements. I think you may feel differently in the coming months

I doubt it. I have seen zero indication that anything is in the pipeline that would really get me excited, at least not that will be released this year.

well outside of obvious sequels like a CoD, we have little clue what type of new IPs the next gen will bring. I think its too early to rule out the second half of the year when there still too much unknown about it. Im really interested on Sony's end bc alot of their big developers havent released a game in quite some time (Sucker Punch, Guerilla, for example). Its possible they already have something ready to go. SP especially doesnt dissapoint and considering they havent released a game since Sony purchased them nearly 2 years ago, I think they could have a game ready for the PS4 launch, if not very soon after, whether its Infamous 3 or a brand new IP

2012 was pretty lame, but it was inevitable given how incredible 2011 was.

I barely bought anything for 2012. I think I bought more nostalgic collectors titles for the old Nintendo consoles than any actual new games.

This. I used 2012 to complete my Metroid Collection and start work on my Castlevania one.

Now that we mention it I could use another year off.

My 2012 retail purchases were

Soul Calibur V
SSX
Twisted Metal
Amazing Spiderman
Spiderman EOT
Mass Effect 3
Catherine
Sleeping Dogs
PS AS BR
Assassins Creed 3
WWE 13
Max Payne 3
Tekken Hybrid
Journey Collectors Edition
Killzone Collection
DmC HD Collection
Ratchet and Clank HD Collection
Jak and Daxter HD Collection
God of War Saga Collection
Infamous Collection

Dang notice a pattern there? No wonder i thought the year sucked. Ive been playing a ton of old games

I completely disagree. Yeah the story was great but the experience was no where close to Halo 4. That had an emotional story and it was fun to play through. Spec Ops was a chore to play through

I got most of my Metroid collection complete. I just need to replace Metroid Prime Players Choice with a black label version and Metroid II for the Game Boy to finish it.

Indeed. I loved how the story was presented and it was a damn blast to play.

gameplay wise That's exactly what it is. But the story is absolutely phenomenal
