Most game movies aren't generally considered "great" but some can arguably be called "good" if not "decent"

Live action movies only -- no anime. Too many in that case and fewer of us have seen a lot of what's out there.

Prince of Persia -- this tops my list.

Resident Evil (1st one) -- not bad, but not enough for me to want to see the sequels.

Tomb Raider (1st one) -- A decent story and action scenes. Not a top action movie, but really not that bad either.

Mortal Kombat (1st one) -- This couldnt' seem to find the right balance of comedy and dark action, but it's still fun to watch, especially considering it's 15 years old. It was the first Hollywood movie I remember seeing with Hong Kong style choreography as opposed to two guys just trading blows like in a Van Damme movie or any other movie about one action star. Bridgette Wilson and Chris Lambert were seriously miscast IMO, but the guy who played Johnny Cage was pretty dead on.

I will now list them in alphabetical order.

Prince of Persia and the two Resident Evil sequels (Apocalypse and Extinction) are okay movies. And so they win by default.

Mortal Kombat is an awful film. Tomb Raider is incredibly dull and a complete misunderstanding of the character (she Indiana Jones, not James Bond).

I find that interesting because the only thing I liked about the movie was Daniel Craig.

Silent Hill: Not only do i think this is the least terrible video game adaptation, i actually find it to be a really good film.

Mortal Kombat: Loved it as kid. Still love it.

Clearly when people think of video game movies that don't suck they think of this...

Prince of Persia sucked. The closest game-based movie that doesn't suck is the first Mortal Kombat.

The first Mortal Kombat

The first Street Fighter

DOOM is cool...

^ now that I look back on the DVD features you're right, my bad.

Prince of Persia is the only one I would dare call "good." Mortal Kombat 1 was cheesy fun, but only if you accept that it's a campy B-movie. Resident Evil was dull and uninspired, and it felt more like the movie Aliens than Resident Evil, and on top of that it was more of an action movie than a horror movie, so it's only enjoyable if you can get past the genrefail. Overall it was just a mediocre zombie action film that really didn't have much of anything to do with the games, whereas the sequels were terrible zombie action movies that had nothing to do with the games.

As for Tomb Raider... Nah, that one's just stupid. If there must be a third movie on my "watchable game movies" list it would be Silent Hill simply because it had amazing visuals. The first half of the movie was just a woman wandering around shouting "Sharon!" though, which is why I can't call it "good" and instead it's just "OK."

Agreed on both.

I still heavily disagree with people who think Silent Hill was a bad adaptation. They have to be the types like this one friend I have who is an anal fanboy. He *****ed and said the movie sucked simply because Pyramid Head was in it, when Pyramid Head was supposed to be James Sunderland's nightmare. His personal manifestation meaning someone else's would have looked different. Talk about laughable reason to hate on a film. As an adaptation I think those people are wrong, as a movie it was still pretty good in my eyes but does have it's flaws.

Much like Mortal Kombat not being a good film per say, i'll say the same goes for DOOM but it was fun. It would have been better if it stuck with demons from hell but I thought it was a fun action/horror movie.

My list of game movies that I don't think suck.

1. Silent Hill
2. Mortal Kombat(most accurate video game to date followed by Silent Hill)
3. Resident Evil(only because it could work as a prequel to the games and it was more enjoyable than the sequels)
4. DOOM(not great but fun and better than the majority out there)

I'm hoping the Tekken movie is at least on par with the first Mortal Kombat. It looks to have decent fights and is trying to be visually faithful to the characters for the most part. I don't doubt the dialogue and overall story won't be good but I just hope it's fun with some good action.

Clue was a great one but i'm only going to stick with video game movies.

Tomb Raider was the best, but they shoud've sexualized Angie even more. It was almost tame compared to the games. :awesome:

Yeah, most SH problems are it's length and some dialogue, which even the director admitted to. As someone once said, it was more like watching someone play SH then a movie. They did get the feel of the movie right though.

Clue..heh, didn't even think of board games. I read somewhere that Monopoly was optioned as a movie not too long ago. I think the multiple endings were "rationed out"' so the one you got depended on the theater you went to, and they just collected them all for the home video.

Yeah, Clue was awesome. Very quatable movie.

As far as video game movies....uhhh, I hate to say it but probably the Resident Evil movies. Mainly because they just said f**k the story and made their own stuff up. As long as you don't go in knowing or caring about the game, it was a pretty good bunch of movies. Everything else was pretty much meh to craptastic. Dead or Alive? Surprisingly decent.

Dead or Alive was an amusing movie simply for the overall cheesiness and fanservice. It was a guilty pleasure movie, the kind that you watch while no-one else is around and play your favorite scenes in slow motion and use freeze frame everywhere. It was pure cheesecake and knew it, and did what it could to make itself entertaining, so mission accomplished. It's not like the source material was particularly highbrow stuff to begin with.

Not a single video-game-based movie has been made that I didn't hate.

silent hill was definatly the best...

then Mortal Kombat (1 only)...then Resident Evil ( 1 only)

Clue is technically the best but thats a board game

Does no-one enjoy the Resident Evil sequels? I find the original movie awful, but Apocalypse and Extinction are loads of fun. Admittedly, Apocalypse is not a good movie by any means, but it's not a bad one, and that elevates it above 90% of everything else based ona video game. Extinction is a genuinely good action/adventure/zombie/post-apoclyptic/Mad Max combo. So that's my vote for best ever movie game.

i had a love/hate relationship with MK1

it was goodfun, but where was the GORE??? the FATALITIES????
thats what MORTAL KOMBAT IS ***damnit!:cmad:

other than that it had a kickass soundtrack:awesome:

Mortal Kombat was one of the better videogame films, many people say that it's cheezy but come on, it was 95', it managed to have everything that was in the MK game. I have yet to watch all of Tekken, I have only seen bits and pieces of it, but from what little I did see, it looks to be really good, people complained about Jin being weak but IMO, he was a very decent hero, he didn't lean towards being a villain until Tekken 5. The film itself borrows most of it's elements from Tekken 5 and it leaves out stuff like Kazuya's rivalry with Heihachi.

Silent Hill is the best IMO. At least on a technical stand point. It also got the feel of the games down pretty well.

MOOOOORTAL KOMBAAAAAT!!!!!!! :D That was cool back in the day. But I think it has aged terribly. Some of the fight scenes are laughable.

Doom was ok... I'm not too bothered about accuracy to the source as long as it is good in it's own right. But i feel them changing it from not being about Hell took away from the film. If they stuck to the games, it could of been really unique. Like The Keep, set on Mars, with more action and demons!

But no, they turned into some generic "genetic experiment gone wrong" crap.
