ok..saw this trailer in theaters with bruno. at first i thought..wow, this is pretty cool. but..death race anyone? this movie still looks cool..but what an obvious rip off. if these guys win 30 matches..they get set free from prison. hmmm...

GAMER is a high-concept action thriller set in a near future when gaming and entertainment have evolved into a terrifying new hybrid. Humans control other humans in mass-scale, multi-player online games: people play people...for keeps. Mind-control technology is widespread, and at the heart of the controversial games is its creator, reclusive billionaire Ken Castle (Michael C. Hall). His latest brainchild, the first-person shooter game "Slayers," allows millions to act out their most savage fantasies online in front of a global audience, using real prisoners as avatars with whom they fight to the death.

Kable (300's Gerard Butler) is the superstar and cult hero of the ultraviolent "Slayers." Kable is controlled by Simon, a young gamer with rock star status who continues to defy all odds by guiding Kable to victory each week. Taken from his family, imprisoned and forced to fight against his will, the modern day gladiator must survive long enough to escape the game to free his family, regain his identity and to save mankind from Castle's ruthless technology.

GAMER stars Gerard Butler (300, THE UGLY TRUTH), Michael C. Hall (Dexter), Amber Valletta (TRANSPORTER 2), John Leguizamo (RIGHTEOUS KILL, ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13) and Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer).

Game is a near-future action/thriller starring Gerard Butler (Kable) as the champion of an on-line game called "Slayers". Mind-control technology has taken society by storm and "Slayers" allows humans control other humans in mass-scale, multiplayer online game. With his every move tracked by millions, Kable's ultimate challenge becomes regaining his identity and launching an attack on the system that has imprisoned him.

Death Race, Rollerball, The Running Man, etc. I'm sure it has elements of all of them.

The action scenes were poorly shot, but the humor was fantatic and on target.

I loved it. The Crank movies rule. And this has the same weird ass charm. It's also funny as hell, and a lot of nods to online shooters such as Halo and COD. Hall was fantasticly creepy, his dance number was epic.

Terry was great as well.

Leonidas was a bit weak. His character needed more...character.

Best stuff was the teabag thing, and the over the head third person view cam shot. Gears of War needs a scene just like that.

8/10

So was this any good or what, it seems a lot of people on SSH have missed but I may go and see it next Friday, is it worth it?

I liked Crank but I didnt like this movie. Its got a few thrills and Butler is cool, but Neveldine and Taylor needs to broaden their horizons a little in terms of cinematography and style

♪ I've got no strings... ♫ C'mon, Butler can act! He was playing a character controlled by a kid 90% of the time, what more is there to expect from the man? This was a great way to kill time and I'm surprised more people aren't talking about it here.

Neveldine/Taylor are brilliant, and it's so sad how their satire flies over heads with people getting caught up in their "ADHD" style. Their portrayal of how much sicker media can become, to the point of people actually being "actors" in a pornographic Sims-styled "Society"... disturbing stuff beneath that great action. The man in the motorized chair will never be forgotten. :o

How ironic ! I was a step away form seeing this but reviews actually kept me away. Now I'm not sure I should of done that.

I think its sad that Neveldine and Talyor have to rely on the crutch of such distracting action movie gimmicks when they clearly have the ability to go above and beyond while still dishing out great action and thrills. The satire works but if its followed by said gimmicks than its not good. Just imagine if the camera stayed grounded, the villain was less hammy, you could actually see what was happening in the Society dance club, and the silly little video game effects were gone, the movie would have been infinitely better.

I look at this movie the same way I do Starship Troopers. The satire is great, but it means little against the backdrop of a bad movie. But thats just my opinion. I want to like Neveldine and Taylor cause they seem like cool dudes, but this and Crank 2 arnt helping
