PS3 has best version of UT3?
Category: PlayStation 3, Posted: 08/23/2007 by Andy Groen, GN Staff Writer

Unreal Tournament 3I never would have thought it would turn out this way, but it looks like the PS3 version of Unreal Tournament 3 is going to be the definitive version.

CVG is reporting today that Epic is touting some fancy new capabilities for their PS3 version of the game. For one, Sixaxis controls are being implemented for controlling the hoverboards, and for the superweapon The Redeemer.

Also, Epic has stated that UT3 is going to run at a blazing 60 frames per second, and that both versions look identical. Now, take into consideration that the Sixaxis controls are only available on PS3, and also that the only way you can be 100% sure you'll get the full graphical experience is via a unified format (ala a console). Add keyboard and mouse support and it's looking like the PS3 version is the one to get.

I know most PC gamers won't want to hear it, but come release day, the console gamers might have a leg up on them for a change.

Unreal games have always been my favorite first person shooters to play online... the action is many times faster then all the others... and once you go back you feel slugish, i remember playing the hell out of unreal championship on xbox live... and then playing halo and getting really pissed with how slow everything was in comparison... the running was like walking, the reloads... the weapons didnt compare...

I have been eagerly awaiting this game and when it drops im grabbin the PS3 version and hook up a mouse and keyboard. i hope they still got the goop gun, i miss the races from unreal championship... especially the predator-like gen-mokai.

capture the flag with a gen-mokai who just pulled off a speed boost was damn near impossible to catch, or shoot rather

Mark Rein-

And the point is that we're more prepared today for PlayStation 3 than we were for Xbox 360 this time last year, and the engine is running a little better - we're X frames ahead with, let's not forget, a lot more polygons and a lot more materials, a lot more characters and a lot more projectiles. When you see UT, this pushes the engine a lot harder than Gears of War did. I know it sounds preposterous because of how great Gears of War is, but we're pushing this up another notch. I'm very proud of that, and I think it's good for us and it's good for our licensees.

TGS '07: Unreal Tournament III PS3 Pre-Show Update
Until recently, Sony's Tokyo HQ would have been a strange place to find Epic's upcoming online shooter. But find it we did.

TOKYO--Epic veep and all-around spokesman Mark Rein was on hand tonight at Sony's pre-Tokyo Game Show preview event at the company's headquarters to show off a recent build of Unreal Tournament III for the PlayStation 3, and also to talk about the future of the game's development on the platform. Production is indeed proceeding apace, and the game is still roughly on track to be released on the PS3 in November, in accordance with Epic's previous statements--although those guys can always fall back on their favored-developer status and play the "when it's done" card if they need more time.

However, the build we tried seemed quite solid, so we don't anticipate any major delays (in our own infinite game-development wisdom, naturally). Aside from a few texture-loading bugs and other prerelease quibbles, the game was running at a smooth frame rate and was quite playable in standard deathmatch against bots on a couple of the game's rather attractive maps. Rein reiterated the game's minor Sixaxis motion controls, which let you steer the default hoverboard vehicle by tilting the controller. The same controls also let you steer the redeemer supermissile after you launch it. Luckily, you won't be shoehorned into using the Sixaxis for anything you don't want to do.

In all truth, reams have already been written about Unreal Tournament III's enormous amount of gameplay modes, vehicles, weapons, and so on. You know that Epic likes to cram these games full, and Rein told us he's more interested in espousing how similar the PS3 game is to its PC big brother than spending time talking about unique PS3 features (of which there are few). But the most interesting thing to us was the confirmation that mod makers will be able to distribute the mods they make for the PC version to PS3 users as well. (You have to fill up that hard drive somehow.) There won't be any arbitrary limit on what modders can do on the PS3; as long as the mod or level or what-have-you can fit into the PS3's memory, it's pretty much fair game. How you'll actually access and play that sort of user-created content hasn't been announced yet, so look for details to surface soon on that, the release date, and anything else Epic has up its sleeve.

Some bad news. There wont be any cross platform afterall when the game drops, at least not initially, if ever

Epic: No Cross-Platform Play For UT3

Unreal Tournament 3One of the most-discussed games of the year has been Unreal Tournament 3, which will be exclusive to the PS3 and PC this year and should arrive in November (the Xbox 360 version will follow in 2008). Obviously, the game will have a heavy focus on multiplayer, so much has been made of the possibility of cross-platform play, and up to this point, Epic Games has not dismissed the possibility. However, it now seems they've made up their minds.

In a recent IRC chat Epic VP Mark Rein confirmed that the game will not feature cross-platform multiplayer. He did say this was certain for launch, but didn't entirely say the idea was impossible for the future. Here are his comments on the subject:

"The biggest challenge in doing cross platform play is syncronizing [sic] the builds such that the build on the PC is 100% compatible with the build on the PS3. Unfortunately (or fortunately) when you [develop] games on console you have a lengthy certification process to go through each time you release anything new."

"We looked at how this would impact our ability to respond quickly to things happening at internet speed on the PC side of the equation and realized that this would not be in the best interests of our very loyal PC userbase," he went on, "because we would constantly be holding on to updates to wait until they passed cert on the console platform."

Later, Rein added that we may eventually see cross-platform play "after the game has settled down," but even then we probably shouldn't hold our breath. Other topics were touched on during the discussion, and Epic talked about the levels of UT3 ("it's all about the color and crazy environments!") and also the fully realized map editor function. When asked if it was similar to the one we find in Halo 3 (it's called "Forge"), Rein kinda took a little jab at Bungie and remarked:

""You mean an in-game editor that lets you rearrange the furniture as opposed to the professional tool we actually made the game with? No, we give you the real editor we use and all the power you can handle."

Yep, that's why we love UT! Anyway, we'll provide more details as they become available, and we're crossing our fingers that the November release date sticks.

That's a shame, but I think mods are more important, along with Keybaord/Mouse.

Bloody dangit! I was hoping to kick the soggy rear ends of those PS3 fanboys online and show them who's boss. Grrr! :o :cmad:

You'd get pwned by me so it's probably for the best.

I think Im going to pick up the PC version. It'll probably be about $20 cheaper and will be a better game experience than the PS3 version. The only plus for me getting it on the PS3 is that I can play it on a bigger screen (22" vs 32")

I see this being a common response.

UT is a pc franchise first and generally pc gamers are snobs when it comes to consoles.

No one is going to go out and buy a ps3 (even at $400) and then pay more for the game on top when they can just play it on their pc. (in the case of games with majority pc fanbases)

Sony picked the wrong franchise

The amount of people with the horse power to run this game at the same level as the PC is small, that and for PS3 owners who don't have an equaly powerful computer, this is the best bet.

Yeah, my computer would implode if I tried to play it :(. PS3 version is just right for me.

that wasn't what I was saying

what I meant was this will not sell systems, it'll sell well to existing owners, but very few people will by a ps3 for this game (unlike halo 3 shifting 360s). PC gamers generally tend to get snooty about consoles and this game's main fanbase is on pcs

I know plenty of hardcore pc gamers and they seem to upgrade their pc's once or twice a year, usually in line with big new games, and they don't come much bigger in the PC FPS world than UT

ps3 is the best version of the game, and i don't care if people dnt buy ps3's for it, as long as i get to play it i'm happy!

thats a matter of opinion. I think PC will be the definitive version. But both should be great. Cant wait till it drops

The makers actualy said the ps version would be better though...

That article is posted at the top of the page and they said that bc the one thing the PS3 has that the PC wont have is motion control, which will be used for hoverboards and certain weapons. Considering how shoddy the motion sensing has been in most titles, I doubt PC players will be missing much and I hardly count the SIXAXIS as a factor in considering the PS3 version the better one

For Vehicles

Motion control > Controller > Keyboard/Mouse.

thats a matter of opinion and most people have no use for it and prefer the traditional ways of control
