The reason why I am starting a different thread from the Andrew Garfield is Spider-Man thread is because this is more focused on ones aspect versus the overall discussion of Garfield playing the character as a whole. One thing I noticed from the recent pictures is that there doesn't seem to be any change in his build since he was signed to play the Spidey. In the 616 universe, Peter is 5'-10" and 165lbs. Not too built, not too skinny. Yes, I realize that this reboot seems to be set more in the Ultimate universe where Peter/Spidey is significantly slimmer than the 616 Spidey but come on, Garfield looks like he is over 6' tall and weighs no more than 145lbs. I am sure what they are going to do as they did in the previous movies is have Garfield wear a very form fitting muscle suit under the costume (Routh did in SR) but at least there was some training and some muscle gained prior to starting filming. I know we haven't seen a pic of the costume or even a recent pic of Garfield with at the very least a t-shirt on but his legs in the pics with Emma look about as thick as a stick.

Thoughts?

IMO, Spidey should always have a slim, ''swimmer's build." It compliments the acrobatic style, and makes it look all the more impressive when he heaves a car over his head. I'm sure Garfield is plenty toned underneath the coat he was wearing in those set pics that were posted recently, and if you can't tell... well, I guess that's the point, isn't it? Wouldn't be much of a secret identity if Puny Parker looked ripped all of a sudden, would it? ;)

Garfield is in better shape now than he was when he was first announced. I can see the difference. However, Garfield just needs to look toned and defined, the suit with muscle padding will do the rest. However, I agree with the notion that spidey should have the body of a swimmer in his early years, as he gets older, he should have the body of an olypic gymnast. I just hope this movie has Garfield really doing something impressive where the audience has nothing but respect and admiration for his power. To be fair though, we havn't seen Garfield in any clothing that sheds any light to wha his body looks like but I'm sure we'll see soon enough.

Spider-man's limbs should be somewhat lanky like a spider.

As far as muscles, the comics are always lacking realism.

I was just watching glee and the Asian dancer, Mike Chang was prancing around with his shirt open and the guy is ripped. Now, ordinarily, he looks like any unassuming guy, probably the same or roughly the same build as Garfield.

i just posted this in anothr thread..

He's being trained by the best, with a perpose, not just to genereic big, they have a body style in mind for him.

The idea is he will be ripped but he shouldn't look big when he's wearing normal clothes.

Look at Cam Gigandet as a perfect example of how a person can be muscular yet, appear skinny.

i imagine that's sort of the stlye they will be going for with Garfield, zero bodyfat, and a more nimble, athletic like approach.

Exactly. Peter/Garfield right now doesn't need to look like he's hulking out of his clothes but when his body is on show, those looking should be impressed.

He should be fat, but not too fat. I personally don't think the tub of lard approach would look too good on screen, but some cat owners prefer a big scratchable belly, so it's entirely subjective.

I see what you did there:yay:

Garfield has the right build, even 616 often uses this build

'Nuff said. ;)

Oooh just look at that bicep. :woot:

I just got this off his website, and remember reading somewhere he use to do ballet when he was a kid or something and now does pilates, cant remember where though.

On training for Spider-Man: “I want to feel stronger that I’ve ever felt, and I want to feel more flexible than I’ve ever felt. I want to feel powerful. You don’t want to just be a pack of meat—it has to be an open body. It does something to your psyche, and it does something to the way you move.”

He has a website? :wow: Show me the link!
And I thought he used to do gymnastics and his father was/is a swimmingcoach.

his build looks like the Spider-Man i prefer, but i don't think you can havea right or wrong build for him anymore as he's been drawn so many ways it's just down to personal preference now, i enjoyed the Raimi movies(even 3 had it's moments) but the one thing i never liked was his build, He looked great in the final fight with the green goblin but other than than he was a bit bigger than the Spider-Man i wanted to see. This Spider-Man though certainly looks the part for me.

I thought Tobey had a perfect build myself.

Garfield looks like Ultimate Spider-Man without the defined muscles. I'd rather have Garfield than some guy who looks like he could beat Lou Ferrigno though.

I kind of wish this wasn't a reboot, and just a live action TV show.

it's the first film of the serie, so i wont bash my head against a wall... but damn it looks hard for hollywood to find muscular actors. In my opinion, little garfield looks like a 8 years old little girl, shape speaking....

and a 'LEAN' silent figure...

spidey was never meant to be massive. I think spidey I think 'swimmer' rather than 'boxer'.

and that arm (i wont call that a bicep) on that black & white pic remind me of kermit the frog

Look for other pictures of him. His arms are pretty defined.

hey maybe (hope so) i'll change my mind when i see the movie. but i'm really not sold to the girly shape up to now. But like i said, i guess he'll do some push ups between movie 1 and 2...

You must know some muscular girls.
