We're not talking about the modern world population, but the population that existed in 1200 AD, when Genghis Khan was busy growing his empire to Mid-Europe.

Around the year 1200, the world population was thought to not number more than about 400 million. That is all the people in Africa, South America, North America, Europe, Asia, and the Mid-East.

You can easily type into any search engine the words, "world population in the year 1200" like I did to confirm this fact.
