George Clooney and the Coens to Hail Caesar

Just saw this last night, haven't read any descriptions, previews, reviews/complaints, other than one trailer, I knew little about this film going in.
So just jumping in to say great fun film, and love letter to the time period of Hollywood.

When Mannix literally slaps the communism out of Whitlock..OMG! LOL!
The man needs to get his film made, it's good for everyone, in the end that's what it's all about, I loved it!
What a great cast of characters.

I'm not too big on the Coens. They're hit or miss for me. A Serious Man was some straight up pretentious ****. I love The Big Lebowski, Fargo, and No Country for Old Men ... And that's it. Their fans kind of remind me of Ridley Scott's fans, where it's like, "Oh, you made Blade Runner, Alien, and Gladiator... and then 20 of the okayest films ever." Lots of hype and praise for a huge resume with only a couple of highlights.

There's no problem in making various films that are just good, three masterpieces are more than enough to prove a career. Coen fans mostly hype them because they like their style and because they're famous for great dialogues. Guillermo Del Toro only has one real masterpiece, and then a resume oof good-to-ok films, yet, he's also hyped to the moon. There's no problem in liking a filmmaker's style, even if that filmmaker just mostly does decent films. It's not as if bad filmmakers were being hyped.

I find people agree on the number with GDT but often not which specific film.

Finally got to see this tonight. I didn't know too much going on. I have to say I really enjoyed the movie. I was surprised to see how much of it mostly comprised of vignettes with Brolin's Mannix floating through. I found it thoroughly enjoyable. With each old genre the Coens take on in this film, each of those segments is the superlative of that genre. A cowboy film with the slickest rodeo clown tricks, the most choreographed dance and synchronized swimming scenes, the ultimate Biblical prestige pic.

Not to get into spoilers too much but this film also seems to take the premise of "What if McCarthy's ultimate nightmare of a Jewish/Communist plot were real?"

All of the cast are pretty great but I was really entertained by the extent to which pretty much every character ever were given roles throughout the film. "Hey its that guy!" "Which guy?" "All of them!" I particularly loved Robert Picardo as the Rabbi.

I personally loved the film. I can see how a lot of people weren't too taken with how loose the plot was. Though not as manic or labyrinth like it did bring to mind another Brolin movie, Inherent Vice.

This movie has somewhat been discussed and marketed as another "George Clooney Doofus" movie and it doesn't quite fit that bill given how small his part is.

I wish they'd go back to making movies with character actors and not big name celebrities.

The biggest name in Inside Llewyn Davis was Timberlake and he had only a side role.
