i, for one, am pretty psyched about it... i've been a huge fan of the original Get Smart TV series for years, and i have the mega-boxset that contains all 5 seasons of that in a case that looks like a phonebooth... i know this won't be the same without Don Adams - his voice was half the character, really - but i'm trying to stay optimistic, and i think Carell has the ability to pull it all off, as long as it's well written... one of the reasons the old show worked so well, IMO, is that it had layers... one layer was the slapstick and catchphrases, but there was also satire and parody underneath... a little something for everyone! if the movie's writers follow in the footsteps of the originals, this'll be great, but if all they do is focus on one aspect or another, i'm afraid it'll fall flat like the other revisions of the series have done... The Nude Bomb, well, bombed, and so did the 1995 TV series (with Andy Dick as Max's son)... the best we've seen so far was the "Get Smart Again" special from the '80s, and it definitely could have been improved upon, though it did at least feel like it belonged...
Carell's definitely got some big shoes to fill, but i'm trying to be positive and hope for the best, and all that...
btw, i didn't read back through the thread to see if anyone mentioned it yet or not, but both The Nude Bomb and the 1995 Get Smart TV show are being released on DVD for the first time ever this June, before the new movie comes out... they're also releasing (on July 1) another original (direct-to-DVD) called "Bruce and Lloyd Out of Control" or something like that, which focuses on these "gedget-meisters" from the Carell movie... i dunno how good it can be without the Max character, but it's an interesting promo idea...
