After 4 or so years my current PC is starting to show signs of approaching death so I have decided to go and get myself a new one.

I mainly use my computer to download torrents (Azureus), watch anime (Core Media Player), gaming and the odd bit of homework.

I've quickly realized that almost every PC now comes with Vista as standard. I've heard some real horror stories about how it has problems running software and just is crap compared to XP.

I'm no expert on this kind of stuff so I figured I'd ask you guys opinions on Vista. Will it really cause me more problems than it solves or is it not as bad as people make out?

Now you've got me interested, what's "signs of approaching death"? How bad do you need to get a new computer?

As long as you get a good warranty for a couple of years you shouldn't have that much trouble.

yah, why dont you reformat your hard drive, run virus/spyware scans, and just go from there.
i wouldnt buy a vista computer until they release a patch

I have Vista and don't have any major problems with it. If your interested in gaming, i advise you to check if they're compatible with vista.

I pirated my copy, but playing games on Vista... I don't know what happened, but every single game I try to play lags like crazy. It's probably because my graphics card isn't strong, but I never had those problems with XP. Must be all the bulls**t processes and whatnot.

It's still a very cool OS with gimmicks galore, haven't had many technical problems. At least nothing nightmarish. For the stuff you do on the computer, you should be fine if your computer is rigged for gaming.

I'd still like to know what he perceives as signs his computer's dying.

Yeah, all the transparency and what not does a number on your RAM. There's really no reason to get Vista yet, and XP runs better (at least as of now), but there's no outrageous horrible reason to avoid getting a new computer with it.

But if you absolutely need a new computer by all means get a Vista. There's no point in buying a computer with a last gen OS that's going to be worthless within two to three years. But for god's sake don't get a Dell, they're worthless pieces of crap.

I seriously doubt you need a new computer though. Why don't you give Geek Squad a call, I'm sure they'll be able to fix whatever is wrong with your computer.

To be honest the problems with my PC probably could be fixed if I sent it away for repairs but I have money so I'm gonna use this oppertunity to get a new system.

It doesn't sound as if Vista is that bad. I just had nightmares of getting it and then not being able to transfer data from my old PC onto it or not being able to download/watch my anime and the such.

Think I may just give in and embrace the change. Pretty soon most PCs will be running on Vista anyway. Such is the power of Bill Gates.

Vista is crap and turns a high spec pc in a slow running peice of ****. We had it at work and it was horrid so we formated and put Xp back on.

I very much doubt with normal gaming, watching videos, and using internet that it will give you any problems. Running very resource heavy programs is where the problems with Vista crop up.

Ditto, I don't use it for anything real intense but it works just fine. The only problems I have had are small but should be worked out eventually due to the fact that my problems only involve programs that have not yet been designed for Vista.

Will I have any problems running programs with Azureus and Core Media/Zoom player on Vista?

Do programs need to be specificly designed for Vista or can you get away using stuff designed for previous systems?

It depends. Some stuff will work fine no matter what. But larger programs that say they are meant for say; Windows 2000, Win Xp and Win Office. Require 30 MB of space a 1.7GHZ Processor etc. and does not mention Vista probably will not run on vista.

Smaller programs you should have no problems with.
