I'm sure this has been posted before but I'm too damn tired to look for it but anyway, how do you set a gif avatar with it it just posting the first frame?

re-read the words in bold again. Your avatar cannot be bigger than 75x75 and the size limit of your avatar is 46KB. As long as it's under those limits your gif avatar will work.
