Gift Cards

I often hear that giving a gift card as a present is pretty lame...what do you think?

well its like giving money.
some say it shows you don't really know the person because it's so impersonal. however i think its nice to have your own choice just in case i get ugly socks or pjamas

I prefer gift cards. Don't get me something you know I won't use. If it's a girlfriend, then yeah, she gets something physical in addition to a gift card, so in case what I got her sucks she can buy what she wants. As far as me, get me a gift card, preferably AMEX or Visa so I can go to any store and splurge.

My only complaint is if someone asks me what I'd like, I tell them plain as day what it is, and I know it's there. But they end up giving me a gift card for the store in queston.

Some people have this logic that you'd rather be surprised...that giving someone what you know they want isn't X-Mas....

I've been begging our local comic store to start doing giftcards because its much easier than me trying to remember the holes in my wife's collection.

From my family, I prefer a gift card so I can pick out what I want.

Gift cards depend on the person...

Never give them to your girlfriend/wife.

But for your friends they're cool.

I would definately say that they are a good thing... it allows the person in question to choose what they want or even helps towards something that they are planning to buy... people might say they don't like them but in reality the voucher/card will be used by said person and they'll be happy that they had that extra little bit towards whatever they got

I like giving gift cards to friends and mainly I buy the gift cards from restaurants that I like and know that my friends have not been too. Its fun to go to new places and not have to spend a lot of money especially if you end up not liking the place. I don't usually buy gift cards to stores, except for grandma, she always likes her victoria secrets gift card.

I personally do not like gift cards,its like the "gift you dont know what to get" gift.But its like what Terry said,better a gift card than something your not going to like or use.

i'd prefer, say, a $50 gift card at Sephora over $50 worth of lipgloss from Sephora, which i've gotten a couple years in a row -- they don't give me the receipt either, and i don't want to ask.

i don't buy gift cards for others though... i try to find *something* that they could appreciate the thought of.

there are instances where there is thought involved in getting someone a gift card -- like if you know someone who really likes music but you don't know what they already have (i.e. i would very much appreciate an iTunes gift card); and if someone just moved or is redecorating, then a gift card at at store like Pottery Barn or Williams and Sonoma would be nice.

Personally...I prefer gift cards. When I was a kid Christmas was awesome cause I would get toys, video games, movies, etc. Nowadays I get cloths. I have enough cloths, damn it. So, I tell people to just give me money or a gift card.
