I was thinking alot about this today...There are so many amazing actors who are just the most popular film celebrities in the mainstream hollywood industry, yet they have not won a Oscar yet.

In your opinion, who DESERVES AN OSCAR THE MOST based on what you have seen from their acting accomplishments?

Here are the main ones...Try to choose from this list, but do explain if there really is someone else from the (other)

I voted O'Toole, but of the modern actors it is ridiculous that Carrey, Bale, and Oldman haven't even been nominated yet. The three of them have given some great performances, definitely nomination-level stuff at least and arguably winner-level stuff.

Cruise is probably the best to not get one but recently he has not been doing such meaty roles that guy like damon and leo are doing

The fact that Gary Oldman has never even been nominated, let alone wine, proves that the Oscars are ridiculous, pointless rubbish.

Someone explain how the greatest ACTOR in the world can't get an award for ACTING.

you should vote for Gary then...Its really funny, I almost forgot to add him, than I realized...Wait a second, what about the commish aka the badass from LEON...He had to be in.

My choice went to Johnny Depp, simply because of his versatility to take on any role and just nail like its really him...Just fantastic, he can also sing too.

I do know if Johnny plays Shantaram soon, he should get a favorable nod to win... That is the role every foreign actor wants, but he got the rights!

Tom Cruise (Got robbed blindly for Magnolia)

Bill Murray (Should have won instead of the tremendous overacting by Sean Penn in Mystic River)

Ed Norton(Beningi?Really?)

I voted for Cruise because there's only one choice but any of these would have sufficed.

All of these actors had the best performance of the year and were beaten by inferior performances so they fit the mold for this thread.Gary Oldman and Chris Bale are great actors but their filmography is more impressive than one specific performance which is what the oscar awards(or should award).

That's why an actress like Hillary Swank has 2 great performances and 2 oscars with an incredibly weak career beside those 2 films while Meryl Streep has such a great resume and yet just 2 oscars as well.

I'm a big Gary Oldman fan but I can't think of a performance of his I would've given the Oscar to. There's definitely a few he could've got nominations for though.

I voted for DiCaprio. O'Toole and Finney definitely deserve them but I think at this point if they were to win it would be a career award. But DiCaprio is hitting his prime now and has the potential for some more excellent performances.

I'd say all of the actors on the poll can put in truly top notch performances, Oscar winning performances.

I voted for Oldman though because it is just utterly ridiculous that he hasn't even been nominated yet.

they are good, they get good reviews, they are praised, they get money, over the years they still get roles.

why do they need a golden naked men?

Oldman - this is just baffling
DiCaprio - nominated three times and still hasn't won. I get the feeling he won't win until he's older
Bale - like Leo, he probably won't even be nominated until he's older.
Depp - was he nominated for Ed Wood?
Carrey
Cruise - his performance in Magnolia was outstanding

I thought I heard somewhere that early reports coming in from The Fighter are saying that Bale will be nominated. Anyways, this is a pretty tough choice because most of them are all great actors but I'd say its between Oldman, Bale, DiCaprio, and Depp. They all deserve an oscar or two and they'll all probably win before their careers are over. I mean Jeff Bridges finally won one last year so some of the best actors gotta wait.

Mickey Rourke - straight up robbed for the Wrestler
Robert Downey Jr
Edward Norton

O'Toole. He's in a league of his own and most of these actors are still pretty young and doesnt feel THAT due.

Crap, how could I forget about RDJ??

Well to win an Oscar most of the time you have to be in a Oscar bait movie. You know the true life story of such and such period piece over coming adversity stuff.

Most these guys have no intrest in starring in those kinds of movies.

Not true...just look at the best supporting wins of the last 3 years:

Bardem-Chigurh

Heath-The Joker

Waltz-Hans Landa

All were extremely cool, fan favorites and critically acclaimed.

You can add Anthony Hopkins as Hanibal to that list and so on...

Gary Oldman is consistently good but he doesn't have that kind of a marquee role.

I'm talking more about leading role than supporting and I don't mean everytime just alot of the time the people who seem to win leading actor fit that formula.

For Your Consideration and even Tropic Thunder parodied it even.

Jaime Foxx in Ray
Daniel Day Lewis in There Will Be Blood
Adrien Brody in The Piano
Forest Whitaker Last King Of Scotland
Phillip Seymour Hoffaman - Capote

All those guys gave great performances but they also fit into the oscar nomination box that hollywood likes to tick off.

I'm not saying they can't win just often the type of movies and roles they play in those movies are not the sort of movies Hollywood picks for Oscar Nominations. They seem to be changing that now though due to the ratings slide and adding more popularist movies to the shortlists.

Well villians are kinda oscar-bait.

Nowdays they just give the win to whatever actor they happen to have a hard on at that moment. Its only in the supporting categories they seem to have a clue about acting.

DiCaprio, Depp, and RDJ need an Oscar win IMO.

you are 100% right.

and the studio support is also important. if the studio is not promoting you for the oscars you have 0....... ZERO chance of nomination.example?
Sam Rockwell and Moon.

Tom Cruise should have won for Born on the Fourth of July and Magnolia.
