Yeah Empire of the Sun is another one i've been meaning to watch...I will check those films out very soon!

And another one I just thought of: Public Enemies. He did a great job with that one, especially when you understand the background on his character. There's a lot of internal conflict that his character is dealing with. The audience isn't shown it through dialogue or action in the script, but they talk about in the special features. The guy he plays was a Southern gentleman and he was basically thrust into a modern, brutal form of law enforcement by J. Edgar Hoover. Bale does a great job of showing through his facial expressions the fact that he is a lawman, but he is conflicted about the behavior Hoover wants him to engage in.

That movie is a frustrating one because the acting is top notch from everyone involved, the recreation of the 1930's is great, and the subject matter is awesome. But there isn't enough character development on-screen, so overall it's just a good movie rather than a great one.

I love RDJ like everyone but i dont think he deserves an Oscar. That said i havent watched all his films so i could be wrong.

Do you guys have a movie in mind?

Zodiac. Have you seen it? He was awesome in that one, sort of a darker version of what he did with Tony Stark. While I think RDJ would have been a deserving nominee for sure and maybe even a deserving winner, Ruffalo was equally great and possibly even better in his Zodiac role. That movie was criminally overlooked by the Academy.

Due to some kind of screwy studio politics, Zodiac got delayed until just past Oscar season, and released in the awards death slot of early April.

Yep. Plus it was a bad release date for box office too. Not saying it woulda been a huge hit with a fall release date, but it probably would have done better.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
I havent watched it but i will some time, thanks.

He was good, but an oscar nomination? Hm... maybe...

Demon in a bottle! :awesome:

Why do the oscars care for the release date? Do the movies have to be fresh in their minds to appreciate them? Goddamn the academy sucks!

MATT DAMON
One of the most underrated actors out there. People raved (rightly so) about Leonardo Di Caprio, Jack Nicholson, even Mark Wahlberg in The Departed, but the true star of that movie, in my opinion, was Matt Damon. Excellent in The Talented Mr. Ripley. Compelling in Syriana. Bonkers in The Informant! And he's hilarious when he wants to be too, as seen with his obscene self-parody in Entourage. He's a dependable, versatile actor who, much like Leonardo Di Caprio, isn't given his due largely because of his good looks.

How do you forget Good Will Hunting? He totally should have got something other than best screenplay.

I think Harrison Ford will eventually get one. Not because of his selected work but for the 'career' Oscar.

Yea Good Will Hunting was immense. Everyone was great in that i thought.

Wasn't Carrey nominated for something in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind?

Lot of those actors probably deserve at least one win or least some nominations, but luck(if u wanna call how they vote for this stuff) has some role in it..
I also think they types of roles/movies some of these guys play as well plays into the minds of the judges..
*This is why I kindof like MTV's movie awards a little more, its more of the general public though I won't say those aren't a little skewed as well.

The academy better give Dicaprio an Oscar very soon.

RDJ in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang was ****ing awesome. So was Kilmer.

"You put a live round in that gun?!"

Indeed, RDJ in Zodiac was Oscar worthy. He pretty much was the Demon In A Bottle version of Stark. It was my first time watching him and I knew about him playing Stark. Once I saw his performance he was spot on.

"Jesus Harold Christ on rubber crutches, Bobby, what are you doing? You're doing that thing. That thing that we talked about. That I don't like."

The problem with many of these Oscar-worthy roles and films is they might not have necessarily been the best that year, amongst the competition. Taking RDJ in Zodiac as an example, it was a great performance, but it can be easily argued Arkin deserved it that year for Little Miss Sunshine (or even JEH in Little Children).

RDJ arguably wasn't even the best supporting performance in Zodiac. Ruffalo was awesome too.

Everyone on that list (aside from the obvious) has plenty of time left to make up for their Oscar robberies...

Especially guys like Depp, DiCaprio, Pitt, Oldman, and Damon.

Those are different years, Zodiac came out in 2007.

I dont think Arkin deserved his Oscar. I think he won only because he was old and has worked so long. He wasnt even the best supporting actor in the movie.

I voted for Johnny Depp, but i must add Lenoardo DiCaprio and Gary Oldman also.

Oh and to me Bale should have been at least nominated for American Psycho. I think that`s his best performance to date.

nope he was never nominated for an oscar for that...Which really made me upset.

His roles have been hit or miss, but the ones for Man on Moon, Truman Show (one of my all time favs), Eternal Sunshine are just mind-blowingly awesome.

My mistake. Ever worse, however, since Javier won that year and that was a no-contest category. :funny:

He would've went up against Russell in Gladiator. That would've tough to win since everyone loved him in that. Again, great roles, but this is just as much it is timing.

Well that exactly was my point at the beginning of this thread but obviously people just vote for who they like the most not who really had the best performance of the year.

RDJ in Zodiac? Are you kidding me?

Bardem and Casey Affleck in Jesse James had infinitely better, more memorable performances than him...Affleck is mesmerizing as Bob Ford.

If you really think RDJ was better than either, well then i guess this thread has lost all sense of reality.

The same thing goes for Gary Oldman...find one role of his that was the best performance of the year,i asked that question earlier and not surprisingly no one has answered it yet.

Gary Oldman hasn't won a single critics award in his life...he has only one Bafta nomination 22 years ago and one SAG nomination The Contender and that's it.

There are no roles that have been criminally ignored by the oscars as if they have something against him. There have been snubs for other actors in the past but they usually have received great buzz/awards elsewhere like Sally Hawkins, justifying the objection people have with the snub.

Oldman has played his parts admirably,he's great in Dracula, the batman franchise,Leon,The Potter franchise,as Sid Vicious...but none of these roles are award worthy by themselves, none of these are the performance of the year.

But considering people think RDJ should have won for Kiss Kiss Bang Bang i'm not surprised how this poll has gone.
