Godzilla is one of the few monsters that regardless of where in the world you're that can be recognized. He has brought terror and laughter into hearts for 50+ years. I've been a fan for years, catching the movies whenever they are on TV. I picked up Final Wars and watched it. It reminded me how awesome these movies really are. I know there are other fans. So lets talk Godzilla.

I love Godzilla, and giant monsters in general. My goal is to collect all the original Godzilla films from the '60s onward, because they've left such an impact on me. They're some of the most entertaining movies I've ever seen.

One of Godzilla is the king of all Monsters. In a real fight he would have fried that big Ape. But obviously they needed Kong to win in that film

I've just started collecting the DVDs. I mostly have them taped off of tv when they where on. I have Final Wars and ordered Gojira last night. So that leaves 27 more to go ;-)

Just saw Final Wars. :up::up:

Saw this quote in another Godzilla thread and thought that it was an interesting idea for possible future movies:
I was thinking today, it would be cool if Godzilla got a reboot that was made in Japan, but produced by a Western producer, similar to how Cloverfield and District 9 had big producers attached to them. This would not be another "American" Godzilla movie-- it would be very much a Japanese production (with a Japanese director), but with a budget of around 50 million dollars (which for a Japanese Godzilla production is VERY big) and a US producer to make sure that it's being spent in the right places.

The plot would probably be a little more international with one or two Western actors to provide a culture bridge. The special effects would be VERY high production value for a Japanese Godzilla film, but it would still use actors in suits w/ some minor CG enhancements (such as composting from blue screen onto real-life / CG enhanced backgrounds) and stuff like that. Basically, the charm of good ol' rubber suits, but with some of the added believability of CG, all for a low-risk budget.

It would be marketed as an event film like any other blockbuster these days with a decent sized promotion campaign, so it wouldn't just be a foreign production getting a US release. Like I said, this would have to be a big pet project like District 9 was, and it would also be an opportunity to give a lesser known foreign director some exposure in the Western market. It would be a REAL Godzilla movie, but it would also be a well-polished, "big budget" (or big budget looking) release.

Maybe Peter Jackson and/or Richard Taylor would be interested in getting involved with such a project?
I'd be perfectly fine if they stuck with his regular rubber suit, with some updates here and there as they always give him, but if they want to give the big guy an updated look while maintaining the feel of the original (as long as they don't take a complete departure, ala the 1998 Zilla), something like this would be cool. Maybe change the head to something more traditional, but the body itself has the aesthetic of the old suits while also looking like it's pretty athletic and capable of some quickness and agility:

That's an awesome Godzilla design

That is an amazing sculpture. It would be a great new look.

Wow, that would be amazing design for a new movie.

I need to find it but I remember reading that they where eying another American take on Godzilla. This design I think would be a big improvement over Zilla.

I was just watching the '98 American Godzilla film and thinking about it in context to the Toho films. I mean it isn't by any means a bad movie but it seems not to be a true Godzilla film. They made him to much of a real animal and not something that causes real terror and can't be stopped. At the same time though I feel bad that the fight between him and Godzilla in Final Wars was so short.

I have seen most of the Godzilla films. I personally favor watching them in Japanese w/ subtitles. The dubbing in films like Godzilla vs Biollante is horrible, and throws off the fact that the movie is ACTUALLY good. But, it is hard to find the films like that anymore. I've had to settle in some cases, though I hate only having the dubbed version of Godzilla vs Destroyer :down

Gojira I think is the best monster film of all-time. Great movie, and very strongly written. The destruction of Tokyo looks great in that film too. Ending is phenominal also.

I, of course, enjoy the fun ones too. But, I HATED Final Wars. The film felt like it took 2 scripts and combined them into 1 film and THEN added Godzilla to it. Godzilla's fights are all brief, and the scenes he is in make it seem more like a fan fic than an actual movie. I hated it. I did love the two recent Mechagodzilla films, though. I still need to see Megaguirius and rewatch Godzilla 2000 (without dubbing this time).

Double post!

I'll add that the Broderick movie was awful.

I have to agree Spider-Fan that the movies are much better subed then dubbed.

The problem I have with the series is all the different reboots they did or changing the origin then changing it back two movies later.

Continuity was never the series' strong point. Only really the Godzilla 85/Return of Godzilla - Godzilla vs Destroyer films had strong continuity. All the others pick and chose what they liked and disliked. Especially in the millenium films.

You are right continuity isn't the strongest part of the series. I liked the more horror based though the fun lighthearted family ones where good too.

There is one good thing that came from the '98 movie though I think and that is the animated series. It was very well done I thought and made up for the movie a little bit.

The actual movie aside, I had always preferred the American Godzilla's sleeker look and design over the traditional clumsy rubber suit design of the Japanese Godzilla. I know I was actually looking forward to a sequel where the new Godzilla would fight another monster, especially as I wanted to see how they would "redesign" some of the other monsters.

That being said............that design above is pure ******* bad***!!!

I would love to see that on the big screen!!! :wow:

^AMAZING DESIGN!!!

That makes me want a Godzilla reboot right now.

I'd be cool with that redesign. It's an actual monster and looks like a mutant Tyrannosaur, not a big iguana.

And just a new Godzilla movie would be fine. As stated already, continuity isn't a big deal in his movies, so let's just leave the "reboot" label off of it, please?

How long was Godzilla retired for? Isn't TOHO rebooting Godzilla in a couple of years?

They said Final Wars was the final Godzilla film but I don't believe them. I can't see them putting the big guy on ice. Though I would love to see an up date of Godzilla vs King Kong with the new designs.

I think I read somewhere that Final Wars was a temporary last movie and he'll get a new film after a few years. His 60th anniversary is in 2014, so I'd say that is a good time to put out a new Godzilla film.

I hope so. I don't mind another American go at the big green one. After all while not a true Godzilla film the '98 was a good cheesy monster movie.

Just picked up Godzilla Unleashed for the Wii and have to say I'm enjoying it. The controls take a little getting used to but if you have a wii I recommend it.

That is an awesome design.

I've been watching Godzilla since I was four. I was so pumped when the Zilla came out (I was like nine) and even to this day I don't think it's any better or worse than the other Godzilla movies. It's not like they weren't cheesy either.

Anyone remember this video?

I have been watching the crap out of Godzilla the Series, based off of the '98 American movie, and it has me thinking why don't we get a decent movie with Godzilla vs Zilla action. Have it based off of the cartoon and have Zilla Jr. fight the real Godzilla but then team up and fightsomething even nastier.
