*And first 3 films of an ongoing series count too*

So what are people's favorite trilogies and what do you consider the greatest one? There are many great ones too. Here are my top 5, which is a combination of my favorites and their impact:

1) Star Wars Trilogy
2) Man With No Name Trilogy
3) Toy Story Trilogy
4) First 3 Rocky Films
5) First 3 James Bond Films

Toy Story might be the only one in which each film was better than the last. You could say Lord of the Rings, but that's more like one ludicrously long narrative to me.

Scream Trilogy. Sure, Scream 3 took a bit of a nose dive from Scream 1 and 2, but it still felt pretty well rounded and closed off enough to be considered a good trilogy.

SW trilogy
Man with No Name trilogy
First 3 Universal Frankenstein fillms
First 3 Val Lewton Horror films
First 3 Romero Dead films
First 3 Hammer Dracula films (Brides of Dracula was still good even w/e Lee)

Seems like a lot of trilogies or series are messed up by the third movie: Superman III, Alien 3, Godfather III, Spider-Man 3, etc. X-Men I refuse to count because I disliked the entire series intensely.

you have to add the LOTR trilogy

No Back To The Future in 5 posts, for shame Hype.

My personal top five (in no particular order)

The Dollars Trilogy
Back To The Future
The Lord Of The Rings
The Mariachi Trilogy
Evil Dead

Honourable mention to Indiana Jones, Die Hard and Star Wars, but they aren't trilogies anymore.

Star Wars (o.t.)
Lord of the Rings
Bourne
Back to the future
Toy Story
The Matrix
The Jurassic Park films

I believe if a film series has a fourth part it becomes quadrilogy and disqualifies Scream, F&F , Rocky , etc.

I think Scream still counts as Scream 4 is the start of a new trilogy centered around Jill.

The original trilogy Scream 1-3 is about Sidney, who just happens to be present strongly in the first installment of Jill's trilogy.

If the focus is more on Jill then I can see that. They'll have to shift the focus off Sidney .

top story for me is the only movie series where each movie is better than the last movie. amazing consistancy

How did you get Top Story? The 'P' is no where near the 'Y' on the keyboard.

Just being a Dick.

1. Lord of the Rings Extended Trilogy (a masterpiece)
2. Toy Story (another masterpiece)
3. Star Wars (original)
4. Bourne
5. Pirates (even though they are making a 4th)

Bourne is not better than BTTF, no offense, I just do not see that.

Bourne is one long chase sequence. Matrix was a horrid trilogy, but the first was amazing. Jurassic Park was a great movie, sequels not so great. Haven't seen BTTF in a long time to tell you the truth.

Same here, all I really remember much is the original.

1. LOTR
2. Star Wars (O.T.)
3. Indiana Jones

Don't you love when a trilogy is like great, then someone makes a fourth one that completely sucks, and you're like WHAT? My perfect trilogy is ruined by their ugly fat younger brother!

For me, BTTF went downhill with each movie

The only one that really improved with each movie was LOTR (but i havent seen toy story)

Toy Story 3 was an Amazing film. Then I saw the first one... brilliant. The second one, just as brilliant. Toy Story and Lord of the Rings are the most consistently perfected movies I had ever seen. I'm not even a huge fan of Toy Story, but you have to admit it's greatness.

Agreed with all of the films you listed.

Honourable mention to Indiana Jones, Die Hard and Star Wars, but they aren't trilogies anymore.

I did say the first 3 films or the intention of a trilogy (as in Star Wars Case with 2 trilogies) counts.

Haha Top Story. :funny:

Agreed.

I think young people nowadays lump Toy Story with all the Shrek and Ice Age, they do not realise how far superior Toy Story is...

what I think is interesting about trilogies or at least the ones of the past 10 years or so are how they are often linked by common actors.

Bruce Spence played two different characters in the Mad Max Trilogy, but recently has had small parts in The Star Wars Prequel Trilogy (as the scary looking official from utapau that obiwan talks to) in The Matrix Trilogy as The Train Man, and The Mouth of Sauran in the Extend Lord of the Rings Trilogy.

Christopher Lee of course played Count Duku in star wars and Sauruman (sp?) in the lord of the rings.

Hugo Weaving plays Agent Smith in the matrix and Elrond in Lord of the rings.

Sir Ian Mckellan plays Gandalf in lotr and Magneto in the 3 X-men films.

Its all rather arbitrary and probably just has more to do with good actors who are open to doing genre movies, but I think it's interesting.
