I'm more a marvel fan but most recently i started reading the teen titans graphic novel. Not too bad.

Anyone have any suggestions for some good DC graphic novels I should look out for based on storyline and realism.

Any of the Grant Morisson, Mark Waid JLA trades are great .... You get evrything from White Martians to Orion and Aquaman throwing handbags at each other.

Although its very unpopular i recomend Identity Crisis, although you do need a bit of past knowledge to understand it.

The Day of Vegence trade is great, especially the Supes, Captain Marvel fight at the beginning.

Alan Moores tales of D.C. is great for anyone getting into D.C., as you need little prior knowldge, except maybe some expierence of the JLA cartoon.

Kngdom Come is one of the best written stories ever (Although its hard for Novices to understand)

Superman Secret Identity is also a great read, as is Mark Waids Superman Birthright.

:)

Robin Year One is a great read and you should also check out green lantern: rebirth. that book is just one long rollercoaster. i knew bugger all about the gl's before that and now im hooked.

Based on realism? It'll be hard to find a good DC Comic with a lot realisim in it. There are some, but not many. Gotham Central comes to mind. But even stuff like Green Arrow and Batman have very unrealistic stories like demons, coming back to life, mutation, ect. Even some of the best Vertigo stuff is very otherworldly. SO yeah, you want realism? Get out of comics because comics are inherently unrealistic. They deal with people that have fantastic powers and put on costumes to fight evil. And most of the the Vertigo books are just trippy and weird, though extremely well written. There are other mediums that will cater to you. But I recomend cracking open a non realistic comic once in a while. It won't kill ya.

'Identity Crisis' would be a good jumping on point if you prepare yourself with a little knowledge of the characters before you dive into the book. It's about as real as it gets with super hero books.

'JLA: Earth 2' is great if you like evil mirror versions of heroes from a parallel dimension.

'Kingdom Come' words can't do it justice, just pick it up.

'Batman: Year One' if you liked Batman Begins, you'll love this.

'Watchmen' no pre-established characters, no continuity to keep track of, just one of the best graphic novels ever created.

'Superman/Batman: Public Enemies' Superman and Batman hunted down after President Lex Luthor blames Superman for a kryptonite meteor coming towards Earth. Great interaction between the two main characters and guest stars galore.

No, they're not. No medium is inherently anything. There are many stories with varrying degrees of realism.

if you liked titans, you could try young justice it has robin, superboy, kid flash and wondergirl before they joined the titans.
if a shapchanger, cyborg and super fast teen from the 35th century are realistic enough for you you should be able to enjoy stuff like jla, jsa, outsiders, day of vengance, omac project and villains united. the last 3 books are also tie ins to infinite crisis

what kind of marvel comics do you read ?

ultimate x-men, ultimate spiderman and the ultimates. Fantastic four is ok but i just never really liked them too much. Ultimate marvel universe is what really interests me.
Recently i was also into astonishing xmen, runaways and xmen academy X

for me what i like about a good graphic novel is mainly storyline and artwork. I've loved batman since i was little kid but i didn't know there where good comic books about him. All i've read is arkham asylum and the Mark miller version of him.
Young justice was too anime and i didnt like it. I like the suggestions so far so I'll find them out. Charchter depth, is a good factor for me when i read graphic novels.
For me, it was a year ago when i read sin city...then the whole superhero thing hit me so now I'm a major nerd looking for all sorts of good reading. Cause i wanna get ideas for writing. Thanks for the suggestions.

Try Batman: Year One, Batman: The long Holloween, and Batman: Dark Victory. Some of the best Batman stories ever written and essintial reading.

Also, go to the thread Benny boy over here posted. It will have pretty much everything and all things you might want to read from not just DC or Marvel but all over.

As a compilation in book form, I really liked Quiver, a fairly recent story about Green Arrow that will catch you up on a lot of his life. As an interesting character, I like him more than Hawkeye. And I am more a Marvel fan than a DC fan. So I don't know what DC fans thought of Quiver But I liked it, and it sounds like you might, too.

Quick question that fits topic...

I was going ot get Superman: For Tomorrow
BUT only Vol 1 is out in paperback form...I dont need to spend $10 more (on Vol1 and Vol2) for hardcover editions when I prefer the ease of reading paperback when laying in bed...

When the hell is Vol 2 gonna come out in paperback form? I checked DC site and I didnt find it.

Also, I am picking up Superman: Healing Factor

Sandman = my brain exploding in amazement. That series owns all.

agreed. check out Morrison's JLA Vol. 1 - New World Order which collects issues 1 - 4 from his run and has one of the best Batman moments in comics. Waid's JLA: Year One was also a fun read.

I havent read much DC either, but I loved Batman: Dark Knight returns. I didnt have much knowledge of the character, but its a great enclosed story.

As I always do when someone asks for a recommendation, I have to mention "It's a Bird!" It's a Vertigo TPB and it's amazing...especially if you want a realistic story. It's a story that takes place in the real world, about "real" people, and over the course of the book, it evaluates the history and relevance of Superman. It's really heavy and it exemplifies how Superman, a fictional character, can impact a person in the real world. It's awesome. It's not a "superhero" tale per se, but it's something different...which I like.

Dont waste your cash.Go vertigo and top cow.

I do like Sandman. And while you're at it, Sandman: Mystery Theatre is pretty good as well.

Probably my top pick, my biggest reccomendation, is Dark Knight Returns. I don't know if it's good for beginners, but it was good for me.

Any batman works besides Frank Millers stuff?
Frankly, I can't stand the mans material, I'd much rather read Hush or the Long Halloween than DKR or Year One. Heck, I couldn't even finish DKR, the art, the story, the writing style, it was all so terrible for me I couldn't even finish reading it...

So lemme put this another way, Are there any good tpb's by Dennis O'neill or someone comparable out there?
I like a heroic, confident, self-assured Batman. Not a man who screams at little kids, or doubts his own abilities.
