Eco-friendly Captain Planet makes a comeback on Internet

captain-planet.jpg

Superheroes never die -- they just come back on the Internet.
So it seems, anyway, for the 1990s eco-warrior Captain Planet and his sidekicks, the Planeteers.
According to publicists, full-length, vintage episodes of the "environmental cult classic" will return -- starting today -- as a Web only series on the newly launched Mother Nature Network, billed as an "Earth-first Web site."
Today's episode is the original show, which introduced the characters and the concept of protecting the earth ecosystem in a cartoon.

Among a dozen Northeast Ohio enviros asked about the show, a handful risked exposing their geekiness.
Kevin Skerl, an ecologist for the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, said he only "checked it out" while in graduate school:
"My initial reaction was that it was an eco-centric combination of the Wonder Twins ( who touched magic rings and said "Wonder Twin powers, activate!" to shapeshift) from the 1970's Super Friends show and the 1980's Voltron (the large robot warrior which was composed of five smaller vehicles that joined together)."
"Captain Planet even had that Superman-like voice quality which exuded authority."
Bill Zawiski of the Ohio EPA's Northeast Ohio District was more succinct: "I have a Captain Planet tee shirt which I still wear to work."

The cartooon -- which some have called environmental edutainment -- was created Ted Turner and Barbara Pyle (the first member of the media to receive a United Nations Environment Prize) and slugged it out on Saturday mornings with other kids fare like "Pee Wee's Playhouse" and "Muppet Babies" -- both also still alive and well in a Youtube world, or with their own Internet site.

The original Captain Planet series ran from September 1990 until December 1992. A sequel -- The New Adventures of Captain Planet -- was back from 1993-'96.
The show had an all-star voice cast, including Martin Sheen as bad guy Sly Sludge and first Whoopi Goldberg and then Margo Kidder as Gaia (Greek earth goddess).
A typical episode summary, found on web site tv.com for the 1996 season, went like this:
Greed Is the Word Aired: Saturday February 24, 1996
Engines are revving up for a giant speedboat race through the Florida waterways. Unfortunately, the race threatens the endangered manatees who live in these backwaters. As usual, the Planeteers try putting to stop the eco-catastrophe. Only, this time they get some unlikely help from Wheeler's favorite TV stars, Danny Dazzleduff and Belinda Bubblebutt from Babe Watch, when they discover that Hoggish Greedly is behind a plan to get rid of the manatees
Some of those episodes are still being shown on TBS, but now "classic episodes" will be released every other Wednesday on the website.

I love Captain Planet but umm..why would you hide the text for this article? And he isn't really BACK back its just some site hosting the original episodes with no new stuff being produced.

I wish the original first series would come to dvd though.

Heh. Belinda Bubblebutt from Babe Watch.

Only the 90's, man.

I didn't hide anything.

why is it written in white lettering?

*lazy*

The article must have had white lettering to begin with. I didn't notice because I use a black background. I changed it to red (which was a bigger pain than you would imagine).

If they made a new show it would suck because you can't beat the original show like many of the 90s shows ,for example BTAS they tried releasing 'The Batman' but we all know it sucked cause not an awesome voice actors ,and awesome score. But you guys know what happens when they try to re boot a classic it is a 5% success rate and 95% fail rate.

"Back"? I've been watching reruns of Captain Planet every night on the Boomerang network.

I liked the show when I was a kid, but I watched it again a couple years ago and thought it was awful.

Watching this show as an adult, I've come to the conclusion that everybody was wrong about Mati. He wasn't the most useless Planeteer. Gi was.

Gi's Water ring wasn't like Wheelers, where he could just create fire from nowhere. Her ring was like Kwame's Earth ring; she could only manipulate her element. The difference is that Kwame had no shortage of land to play with, but Gi needed to find a nearby river or a pond of fresh water. Practically every episode of the show took place on a dry ass savanna, a North American desert, or the inner city. Even if there was water nearby, what the hell did she ever do with it?

At least Mati's Heart ring let him control animals. Some idiot was always trying to trap the Planeteers with a leopard or some other carnivorous wild animal, but Mati needed maybe 5 seconds to turn it into a new pet.

The best episode was the AIDS one ...youtube that...funny stuff.

Wasn't there a villain named Looten Plunder?

Yeah, there was a Lootin Plunder. The villains all had horrible puns for names.
Hoggish Greedly
Dr. Blight
Sly Sludge
Verminous Scum

That last one isn't even subtle.

:funny: I used to have the action figures, the Planeteers came with their own ring that you could wear.

I always thought "Verminous Scum" was the most plausible-sounding name anyway. :oldrazz:

I'll probably watch a few of the old episodes again. It's nice to have them all in one place where they're easily accessible at the drop of a dime.

The only good thing that came out of Captain Planet was the sketch on Robot Chicken.

I hated Captain Planet as a kid. He was just awful.

So in conclusion, **** Captain Planet, he sucks ass. And **** Ted Turner for coming up with this ****.

I remember having the action figures

This thread inspired me to write an article, which I posted on my website a couple of nights ago. I'd post a link, but that'd practically be spam. Instead, I'll direct you all to the link in my signature, while I continue to discuss the topic at hand.

Anyone else remember the episode where Linka and her cousin got addicted to drugs, and her cousin died of an OD and blood loss? Freaking crazy!

Captain Planet wasn't afraid to tackle the hard issues. They kept it real, son.

Except for Wheeler. I mean, really, who the f*** would ever be named "Wheeler"?

I loved this show as a kid but I haven't seen it for many years. I don't know how well it would hold up for me.

Still, I thought Captain Planet was so cool. I even had his color changing action figure.
