Ok, I just bought the vol.1 hardcover for Gotham Central and...this book ROCKS. Seriously this is one of the best kept secrets in comics right now. Brubaker and Rucka write great police drama and mix it well with the fictional aspects of Batman's universe (using Mr. Freeze in the first arc was very bold but worked!).

Anyway just thought i'd make a thread for this book for people to discuss it. I cant wait to buy the next volumes, too bad there were only 40 issues.:csad:

The hardbound version of Volume 2 is already out as well and has Two Face and the Joker in it.

I also wish this series lasted longer, it was like NYPD Blue mixed with Law and Order mixed with the world of Batman/Gotham.

It definitely feels like NYPD Blue, its got more of a New York feel to it than a Gotham feel i think. Why was this series canceled? Sales?

I don't remember why it was canceled but it might have just been intended as a limited run in the first place.

Yeah, i have the first hardcover as well, totally great.

I requested the 2nd collection softcover for Christmas but instead got the 2nd compilation book, that had the Montoya story from vol.1, but also had some issues of Detective comics that showed how Two-Face met and got interested in Montoya in the first place.

Only 40 issues? I thought there would have been a bit more, oh well.
The run Brubaker and Lark did on Daredevil afterwards is amazing. Once you run out of GC you could always have a look at those if you haven't already.

Someone on another message board suggested that GC would be an ideal Batman spin-off tv series. It absolutely would if it were as good as the comics. Just having some fleeting guest appearances by Batman like the books.

While I'm sure sales had something to do with it, it was ultimately Rucka's choice to end it since Brubaker and Lark had left the series to sign exclusives with Marvel.

Don't worry, the series definitely has an ending, and because of that I am very satisfied with 40 issues of the best DC ongoing I've read in years.

There's also Checkmate by Greg Rucka, which is not really related to GC much as it is to OMAC Project, but in terms of quality and its complexity, it was basically the Gotham Central of politics.

And in any case, some of the characters are still around, and Rucka has written quite a few things with them post-GC. Still, not as good as Gotham Central.

Just curious, what issues do Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 hardcovers collect? Considering how much I loved the series, I would definitely consider buying them, but only if they make the hardcovers to collect the entire series.

Vol.1's got issues 1-10 and vol.2 has 11-22 i believe. I cant wait to get vol.2, its got Joker!

Yeah that story is amazing. But I think the one that is 19-22 is a Mad Hatter story that is right up there with Half a Life (the Two-Face one).

Seriously, for a comic book about sideline cop characters, GC did a much better job with Batman's rogue's than regular Batman books were doing at the time.
