Gotham City Impostors was just announced by Warner Bros. Interactive. The game will be a downloadable first-person shooter where players will battle for control over Gotham City. Gamers will play as "impostors" inspired by DC Comics characters like Batman and The Joker. Gotham City Impostors promises a level of customization similar to DC Universe Online where gamers can create their own heroes. It will be available for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.

From the official press release:

“Gotham City Impostors blows apart expectations for superhero games with an exaggerated take on first person shooters, set in a part of the DC Universe players have never seen before,” said Samantha Ryan, Senior Vice President, Production and Development, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. “Monolith is creating a game that turns Gotham City upside down and we think fans are going to have a blast with this creative twist on multiplayer heroism and anti-heroism as they play up the classic rivalry between Batman and The Joker.”

The game will feature modes and maps inspired by DC Comic's Batman series.

The core of the idea strikes a chord with me, but the FPS and impostor angle throws me for a bit of a loop. It could really go either way (stunning commentary, I know).

It's been well over an hour since I came across this and I still have no clue what to make of it. I keep envisioning playing Doom as Hugo Strange in a Batsuit, confronted by the Jokerz from Batman Beyond.

I'm just going to stop thinking about it.

If the plot sounds familiar to you, you may have already read Detective Comics 867 through 870. The four-issue story Batman: Impostors features a plot inspired by an early concept for the upcoming game.

Concept image of Gotham City Impostors clarifies a bit

So, that Gotham City Impostors game which was announced yesterday sounds a bit strange. This bit of concept art helps to solidify that first impression a bit. I love the idea of these little armies of misfits -- that probably neither Batman nor Joker would want to be associated with -- wreaking havoc in the streets of Gotham.

And we all make Batman costumes out of stuff lying around the house. That's just part of being a healthy twenty-something, right? So the character customization options suggested by this image should be instantly recognizable and beloved by all.

It just bums me out that it's a first-person shooter. I would think that, what with the focus on character customization, a third-person shooter would be fun. If I'm going to spend a bunch of time tricking out a character, I want to be able to look at it. Something in the vein of a Monday Night Combat, could have been brilliant. Still, I'm eager to know more and I'm hopeful that it winds up being as much fun as the concept sounds.

This seems like a really, really stupid use of the Batman license. I mean do we really need this? I mean it really wasnt that long ago that Batman Forever and Batman and Robin almost destroyed the franchise. More 'Dark Knight', less everything else.
