For all the racers out there! Gran Turismo is back! This time, the race will be on the PS5, hopefully without a bumpy ride.

Shame but I guess delays are expected with all this going on. Absolutely no surprise on God of War though.

Gran Turismo 7
88 on metacritic so far. Looks like it’s going to be a good one!

Crazy user score (2.2). I think that’s down to the nature of the micro-transactions rather than the quality of the game.

There's also the "always online" DRM.

Not sure why games have to have these. Better if they had a proper single player option too. Also when the servers are down or the player's internet is down they're stuffed.

I mean, yes, but those are all features from the perspective of way too many studios, not flaws. An always-online, always-multiplayer ecosystem gives maximum power and maximum marketing options to the studio. Piracy and used game sales? Almost impossible. Microtransactions? Impossible to avoid. A new upcoming sequel? Shut down the old servers, now they *can't* play the prior game.

Needless to say, this is why I refuse to play any game that uses an always-online structure, unless it actually is an MMO ( and is marketed and priced as such ).

Seeing a Sony flagship like this stoop to such hideous monetization makes me concerned for future exclusives. They were one of the few remaining places where games could release without excessive greed.

The massive live service plans seem to be a bit worrying too. Although games that are outside of that should be fine.

Frankly I think making racing games live service and online is the logical direction in our social media era. Gran T has always had tracks from all over the world and international vehicles so allowing a community of gamers from all over the world log in and race each other makes a lot of sense.

Its only a problem when predatory sales tactics are used against gamers to pressure them into buying micro transaction, and when publishers abuse the game and the player. Which is to say live services will always be a problem. Publishers just can't help themselves in our capitalist world when every possible dollar must be made and every quarter profit line must be better than the last. They will always risk the franchise and the fanbase to make as much money as possible as quickly as possible.

I also think it’s a natural model for many driving games, but would be great if you also had an offline mode too. Could always sync progress when internet back on or servers back up.

I am fine with online games. You want to build your racing game around an online model, sure, go ahead. However:

1. You'd better *market* it as an online "Racing MMO", rather than pretend its a singe player game. A single player game can be played without any internet at all, if it requires constant connection it is not single player. Period.

2. You'd better *price* it as an online game, and not as a single purchase product. True MMOs can get away with both a purchase price and MTX, but they also have *faaar* more content than the average video game, delivered continuously. If your Online Racing Game doesn't have at least most the same amount and flow of content as an MMO, then you'd better pick one, either box price or MTX.

The problem here is that Sony wants to pick and choose. They want to make what is effectively a single player game, and make you pay for it as a single player game. . . but also render it unusable without keeping the game online and interacting with a heavily monetized MTX ecosystem. To which the correct response should be "Screw you, I'm going to go play Forza instead."
