it does bank on the name do you honestly think i am legend would of made 585 million WW w/o will smith?
but Will Smith is a true hollywood star who brings millions with hes name.

the question is if other actors or Jolie can do that.

GRAVITY, despite the money WB have put into it, is a female driven sci-fi flick which isn’t action/adventure oriented in the vein of AVATAR or to a lesser extent INCEPTION and as narrow minded as it may be to many film buffs here and elsewhere the studio want a return on their investment.

I’m frustrated, on the one hand, as ,assuming it does get shelved, it’s an example of the studios failing to give more actresses (up and comers as well as the established likes of Bullock) opportunities to actually headline tentpole movies that aren’t romantic comedies or glorified Lifetime specials.

Then again they might as well end up changing the lead's sex if they can't trust any actress aside from Jolie to deliver. It has form as when THE BLIND SIDE (of all movies) was accepted by the studio the movie's director John Lee Hancock approached both Julia Roberts and Sandra Bullock who turned it down. Hancock claims the studio wanted the lead character's sex changed(despite it being based on a true story) if they couldn't get either actress so in desperation, as they're doing with Angie, he approached Bullock again...and the rest is history. And btw if they do end up doing that it's pretty much a slap in the face to every other actress in town aside from Jolie.

I don't say this flippently, because it isn't as easy as pie, but the script needs to be rewriten into a lower budget movie and then they need to find another actress. Yes Jolie is the top action chick but her boxoffice record (like all actors) is pretty f**king spotty outside of her tough chick roles and this doesn't sound like it would be a tough, sexy ass kicking chick role so even with her I doubt that the movie could support that 80mil budget.

Ditto.
Even though i had considered her as a possible candidate , i always dismiss because she doesn't do blockbusters. Post Mummy she really started from the ground up with indie flicks with the only "big" movie being Constantine.
But yeah IMO a great choice

With the budget trimmed Weisz certainly makes sense.

Natalie Portman offered lead in Alfonso Cuaron’s ‘Gravity’

As Darren Aronofsky's psychological thriller rallied audiences at the Venice and Telluride film festivals last week, Portman has fielded an offer from Warner Bros. to star in the drama "Gravity." The lead in the epic survival story, co-written by Alfonso and Jonas Cuaron, has been a highly sought role for months, with Angelina Jolie pulling out of it recently.

The $80 million 3D survival story, which Alfonso Cuaron will direct, centers on a woman stranded on a space station after satellite debris slams into it and wipes out the rest of the crew. Robert Downey Jr. already has committed to a supporting role, but much of the picture is devoted to the female character, who must survive a solitary ordeal much in the way Tom Hanks did in "Cast Away" or James Franco does in "127 Hours," another Telluride sneak screening.

In the wake of "Swan" notices, Cuaron finally got the green light from the studio to relay the offer to Portman without requiring a screen test. Portman, who couldn't make it to Telluride's "Swan" screenings Sunday, is expected to read the latest version of the script this week and make her decision shortly.

Although Cuaron, Downey and the studio have juggled multiple potential stars, including Scarlett Johansson and Blake Lively, none has come up all cherries. But the role now is Portman's if she feels up for it. As an added benefit to the studio, even with a nice raise, her salary would only come in at about half of Jolie's.

When you're looking at all the actresses linked to this project , i'm starting to think that the studio ( and maybe Cuaron) are looking for a female lead that needs to be quite famous with the general audience ( and act well).
Now with Portman potentially being nominated ( and winning) the Best Actress Oscar , it does make sense that WB is offering her this role.

Studios like to follow the buzz. Portman might not even be nominated for an Oscar, but the fact there is 'early buzz' about it potentially happening means they will jump on it.

I'd prefer Portman over all those other actresses named.

Given the concept and the money being spent on it that isn't a suprise. What will be refreshing is a rare big sci-fi movie headlined by a female. Assuming SHE's the one and also assuming that Cuaron is allowed to keep his $80m budget it's going to be Portman's biggest challenge whether or not she's nominated/wins the lead Oscar next year for BLACK SWAN.

Natty P would be a good choice but they still need to get that budget down.

WOuld have loved Weisz to be in it, but Portman is a wonderful choice.

I'd prefer Weisz, but I don't mind Portman. And if they wanted to keep the budget down, they wouldn't have offered it to her. She must be in their price range.

I'm just shocked that a movie like this is being made. Bravo Curaon and WB!

I do hope this gets made. I have a feeling this actress thing will hold the film back and make it delayed.

well, they need to get Portman ASAP because Downey will be a busy man.

He has the Avengers coming in January, and I don't even know when he's going to film Sherlock Holmes. What this October? There's zero news on that one, heh!

I'm thinking they're going to film his scenes as early as possible, maybe during the fall, during or after Sherlock 2.
