Gravity is an original movie. its not based on a book or comicbook. so noones childhood was raped from behind.

Open Watter 2003.
Burried 2010

i dont think we get every month this kind of movies.

It is an "original" script, which is cool- but it's hardly an original premise. Cuaron is an excellent director, I just don't understand what the content of a movie like this is meant to be aside from an overarching feeling of anxiety and a multitude of "oh *****!" moments.

he wanted to have 100% freedom with long takes.

The last shot of the trailer got people laughing the last time I went to the theater. Something about her floating away and asking for help is a bit amusing.

Saw the trailer. Is this seriously the whole movie?

Am I the only one tired of these gimmicky "trapped survival movies" (See: Buried, Open Water, etc... lol). The whole thing is just them struggling and then they either somehow survive or die...the end(?)

And we, the audience are meant to constantly think to ourselves, "That's my worst nightmare!", "Imagine how scary that would be.", etc... so what?

I enjoy these type of films. Open Water was a bit boring. However I thought 127 Hours , Cast Away , and Buried were good.

Has anyone seen Wrecked? I would put that in the same category.

Oh god, I went to the MOS screening that that trailer played. So many chuckles. Personally, I think that part is hilarious. Reminds me of when that minion helplessly floated away into the sky as he screamed in Despicable Me.

If she wasn't doing a cartwheel and just floated it wouldn't seem as funny.

You people must be a riot at plane crashes, factory explosions and other assorted disasters.

Yeah, it's the cartwheel and lack of gravity that makes it funny.

this is what WB and Cuaron decided to show to the public. this is what they decided to show you to get you in the theater. if you dont find this interesting in 2013 than this movie is not for you.

LOL... damn, this is too much. I do agree though... don't see this movie getting a lot of asses in those seats. Seems kinda boring but the effects look great and the acting is on point.

I'm the life of the party at ship wrecks.

Perhaps it will be like To Build A Fire in space portraying the struggle to survive.

It's just unintentionally funny because you expect her next line to be " Aw crap" or something along those lines .

Neither was Indiana Jones.

When was the last time you saw a large budget hollywood movie about people adrift in space?

*crickets*

People have lost track of the meaning or purpose of "original."

i like to use the word original on SHH. i know that someone will always writte me back that its not original. hahaha

yet when a new comic book is out it doesnt matter. hahaha

Yes, but Indiana Jones had moments which ellicited a spectrum of emotions other than anxiety and "oh ****!"

When was the last time I saw a large budget hollywood movie about people trapped in space? How about trapped in the Ocean, trapped underground, etc...I just don't see where the content is. What's the point of watching it other than to see if the two main characters live or die?

Also, since we see Sandra's character drifting off into space, we can assume that she either:

a. Dies
b. Is rescued by a deus ex machina

You can certainly take an old, tired, hackneyed idea and breathe new life into it by doing it in a way that's never been done before. That's as close as we can get to "originality".

Lmao, I can't imagine how Bullock's character will be saved. Maybe I should watch the movie to find out... I mean, I really enjoyed Children of Men but this seems different.

Just watched the trailer again, I chuckled a few times too.

Why would it necessarily be a deus ex machina?
Are anxiety and shock the only emotions people are capable of when facing death, particularly when it becomes certain? Check out the story the Cold Equations some time.

Your conclusions about the inevitable endings are meaningless. Its similar to saying that no sports movies should ever be made because the protagonist either

a. Wins

B. Loses.

As if anything that takes place before the ending has no narrative nor entertainment value.

Don't blame Alfonso Cuarón for your own lack of imagination.

Has anyone noticed across the different trailers that at different times, particularly in the first trailer Bullock is wearing different space suits? Her drifting off into space after being flung off the arm hardly seems like the endpoint.

Lack of imagination. lol.

Anxiety and shock are the only emotions that this trailer tries so obviously and desperately attempts to elicit.

The trailer, which is meant to give you an idea of what the movie is about, the general atmosphere, tone, etc...and this one showcases only panic, distress, and things crashing into each other. It's comes off as gimmicky rather than geniunely thrilling (as it would have liked to).

The sports film parallel might be close (as they are generally dull), but is faulty only because the entire film isn't based around one do-or-die match much as this entire film is based around the wreckage. What counts as a "sports film"? Ali? Rocky? Prefontaine? Rudy? These are dramatic character studies. Maybe "Gravity" is too, but nothing I've seen has led me to believe such a thing.

If there is more to this movie, I won't know because the trailer has done it's damndest to pull as much anxiety out of you and get your adrenaline pumping (it's intentions are obvious) making you ask: "what if I were stuck in space and there was a wreckage", etc... The premise, and the emotions it's meant to elict are to me, weak and uninteresting.

Was it meant to be thrilling though? Perhaps you've assumed the film was going to be something entirely different to what it actually is. This film looks panic inducing which I'm guessing is exactly what it's meant to be.

I really really really want to be excited, but I don't know if I can sit through two hours of this.

I'm still questioning what it's about and how it can go on for this long...

Buried - terrorists outside
Cujo - vicious dog outside
Open Water - sharks outside
Frozen - wolves outside
Gravity - lack of oxygen?

Also for anyone who brings up 127 Hours - I don't remember that being marketed as a survival horror film.

If this is another character piece like that and they're just incorrectly trying to sell it as just a survival horror film - okay, that's one thing - but if it is just a survival horror film the other films I listed had a more intense antagonist.

Regardless of the marketing, how is the content any different?

The trailers give the basic set up and premise which is exactly what trailers are supposed to do.

Regardless of whether not those films are "character studies" it is just as easy to reduce their plot descriptions as you are doing here.
