Bryan Singer(Say what you want but X1, X2, Apt. Pupil, and The Usual Suspects are great films.)

The greatest director to have never have directed a feature film.

Yup! Longest he has done thats in the the public is 6mins! (12mins if it were 100% how he wanted it!)

but hey never say never he might do one soon! ;)

This all really depends on what you think a director should do, doesn't it? I mean a film may, in your, be superior to another but that doesn't always mean that the director has done a better job or is better full stop.

Someone posted a while back that he liked Michael Bay, and he seemed kind of ashamed of it, because of the kind of film that he makes. But as a director he is fantastic, he has a vision of the film he wants to make and is able to create that vision better than most, now that vision may not be your particular taste but the fact remains that he was able to direct the departments and people under to make the film he wanted made.

I'm not sure who my favourite director is, Martin Scorsese films speak to my heart and mind because the area I grew up in is not that much different that his neighbourhood.

Oh and guys is there any chance of people staying why they like a director rather than just making a list?

i think he's a better cinematographer than he is a director. his movies are like slide shows of pretty images, but he doesn't tell a story particularly well, and he doesn't get good work from his actors.

My favorite and I think the greatest is Stanley Kubrick.

Second best is Francis Ford Coppolla

Best current directors are Ridley Scott, Martin Scorsese, David Fincher, Paul Thomas Anderson (not Paul W.S. Anderson) and the Coen brothers.

Glad to know all the greatest directors are from America and have made films in the last 20 years, damn we must be entering in another golden age of cinema /sarcasm

I am kind of lazy right now so I suppose sarcasm will have to do but to just name a few outside of the box...

Harmony Korine
Fritz Lang
Sergei Eisenstein
Lars von Trier
Ingmar Bergman
John Ford
Sam Peckinpah

Just off the top of my head...

What about John Carpenter, Wes Craven, Clive Barker

Jim Jarmusch
Tim Burton
Terry Gilliam
John Carpenter
Guillermo del Toro

My Top 10:

Bernado Belluci
Vittorio De Sica
Federico Fellini
Luis Brunel
Orson Welles
David Lean
Fritz Lang
Spike Jonze
John Frankenheimer
John Carpenter

Nice list.

Stanley Kubrick
Kryztoff Kieslowski
Vittorio De Sica
Federico Fellini
Luis Brunel
Orson Welles
Francois Truffaut
Roman Polinski
Michealangilo Antonioni
Martin Scorsese
Ingmar Bergman
Andrei Tarkovsky

I'll have to say:
James Cameron - might be a jerk in real life, but can't argue with results
Ridley Scott
Darron Arronofsky - say what you want, but I love his films, even The Fountain
Chris Nolan - I won't say TDk is the greatest movie ever, cause it isn't
John McTiernan - the man knows what kind of movies he does best, ACTION.
Guillermo del Toro
Spielberg - Not my favorite director, but definitely worthy of this title.

I guess I should say these are some of my favorite directors. Obviously there are some other directors with more talent that should be on this list.

Some *****e is totally gonna' say Chris Nolan.

Calm down. In two decades, he may actually rank among the best. I feel the same about Aronofsky and a few others.
____________________________________________

As of right now, the usual suspects:

Kubrick
Hitchcock
Spielberg
Scorcese
Coppola
Cameron
and out of childhood pity: George Lucas

oh, maybe Clint Eastwood also.

Pi is excellent.

I have yet to see "Pi." I hear it's very good. Requiem for a Dream is just depressing, even reading about it is depressing. But it still is a great movie.

I'd like to add that I though Hugh Jackman and Clint Mansell totally got jipped by the Academy.

I'll even give Michael Bay a nod. Not for greatest director of all time, but perhaps one of the best action directors out there. Gotta love "The Rock" "Armageddon" (Fun movie) and "Transformers".

When I heard Michael Bay was directing "Transformers," I really had no feelings bout it one way or the other. I felt bad for the guy when I heard he received death threats.

There's guys I like such as Chris Nolan, Bryan Singer, Sam Raimi but they're no where near the greatest.

The legends:

Sergio Leone
Martin Scorsese
Steven Speilberg
Ridley Scott

Christopher Nolan although i dont mark out for him like alot of people do, I do really like his style of direction and i think he is in a totally different league than Sam Raimi and Bryan Singer. Zach Snyder is an awesome director as well

Ridley Scott, Martin Scorsese, The Coen Brothers, James Cameron, and Chris Nolan(:o).

That is all.
