This is a thread to discuss the graphic novel Green Lantern Rebirth. I have read this graphic novel. For the first Green Lantern graphic novel it is one of the best.

A) It's not a graphic novel. It's a trade paperback.
B) If this is the first you've read, it can hardly be the best.
C) I'm pretty sure this would've fit just as well into the other Green Lantern threads.

Either way, I didn't like it much. Thought the Parallax thing was a weak cop-out.

First of all, please forgive me for what I'm about to say....it's been building up since the first time I heard they brought back Hal, and has built up even more when I read the first few issues of the new series....
So for all the Hal Jordan fans (who I am also a fan of) please allow this one moment of ventilation.

* * * *
I'm sorry but man....DC's Green Lantern staff SUCKS!!!! Am I the only one who thinks that DC's revival of Hal Jordan sucks?? Come on....I'm cool with him going form good to bad then redeemed but DC!!!!(LITTLE PRICKS) conviently decides to make an excuse why Hal turned into a bad guy.... what the hell was this?:
"it was revealed that Parallax was actually an ancient demonic parasitic entity dating back to the dawn of time, that actually was the sentient embodiment of fear, and which traveled from world to world, feeding off the fear of sentient beings, and causing entire civilizations to destroy themselves out of paranoia.

It was this creature, yellow in color, which the Guardians of the Universe imprisoned within the central Power Battery on Oa using fear's opposite energy, willpower. Parallax had lain dormant for billions of years, his true nature covered up by the Guardians to prevent anyone from trying to free it, and thus, it had eventually come to be referred to as simply "the yellow impurity." This was the reason why the rings were useless against the color yellow: Parallax weakened its power over the corresponding spectrum, and hence only someone with the willpower to overcome great fear could master the power ring. Thus, when recruiting new Green Lanterns, the Guardians were careful to pick only those with that type of personality. When the renegade Sinestro was later imprisoned in the Power Battery himself, his Qwardian yellow power ring tapped into Parallax's power and awakened it, allowing it to reach out to Hal Jordan through Jordan's own ring when Jordan was at his weakest, spending years influencing him, causing him increasing self-doubt, and even causing his hair to turn white at the temples. Parallax's control over Jordan exploded with Jordan's grief over the destruction of Coast City, and it was Parallax who was responsible for Jordan's subsequent murderous activity, his apparent killing of Sinestro (which was later revealed to be an illusion on Sinestro's part, created as the final stage of Jordan's susceptibility to the impurity in order to break his will), and Jordan's destruction of the Central Battery, which allowed Parallax to graft itself onto Jordan's soul."
I mean LAME!!!! So what we the readers are supposed to believe that Hal could do NO WRONG UNLESS HE'S POSSESSED? Whatever happened to the concept of being human...of learning from our mistakes....the importance of learning from our failures...???
No, we're denied to see that because DC decides its better to create this seperate entitity to possess Jordan and through that we can let him be a villain.
Wouldn't it be better if they left it as is, with Hal donning his role as GL but living with the nightmares of what HE, HIMSELF DID (with no possession angle)???????
To strive to be a better hero then how he was before, by trying to avoid the mistakes of the past??
So, DC is teaching the kids that their heroes are more then human....and if they do something bad, they have an excuse.
What kind of lesson does that teach the kids that they can do wrong and say they were taken over by another entity?
My confidence in DC is suddenly shaken.

Ahhh, thank you I needed to get that off my chest...

I'm good now, thanks!

Go Hal!

Go Hal!

you do know they has a spectre series for hal right?

and i doubt anyone wouldve want 7 years of stories about hal jordan trying to find redemption. becoming all emo, since its the word this board has become so fond of.

even if hal did come back without the parrallx bug and all that retconned stuff. do you honestly think anyone in the DCU universe wouldve just let that go? and just say ok now hal time to go seek redemption now that your back still as parallax?no! they wouldve kept him locked up in some sort of containment field like they did with sbp. so tell me stelth prime how the **** is he gonna become a better hero if he's locked up and has all his rings taken from him and officially depowered? do you foolishly think the guardians would be stupid enough to keep him as a green lantern knowing that he's still parallax?

and lets face it, nothing that hal wouldve done wouldve made up for what he did, NOTHING!!!not even reigniting the sun. the dude killed corp memebers and all the freakin guardians, how the **** was he suppose to become a better hero with nothing to ****in be apart of?!

and lets get this shnit straight hal was not possesed, he was INFLUENCED by the bug. this is heavily implied in the book, if you could've understand a book after you read it, maybe you would've realized this.

so please get your head out of your ass. this was the best way to bring him back and the story was very well told. and intertwined pretty damn well with the green lantern mythology. btw, i suggest you read green lantern OYL, if your going to complain about hal not trying to learn from his mistakes.

and itwas equally lame in the first place to even have hal go bad. because his ****in city was gone? a city which he didnt even live in for years prior? and how come for some ****in odd reason john stewart was never ****in influenced by the bug since he so heloped destroyed a ****in planet?! face it it was just a bumbass editorial decision, other heroes have been in worse disasters, and now hal suddenly makes a big hoopla about it?! the whole thing was just a lame idea in the geico which belongs on the same plate as the clone saga ordeal.

ya, what he said!

I'll take a bad retcon for a bad character job any day of the week.

I'd prefer a good retcon for a bad character job. Of course, I'd prefer nothing at all in Hal's case, since they haven't done a damn thing worth reading with him since he's come back anyway. The best stuff from Hal's resurrection has come from the fallout: the excellent Green Lantern Corps series, Crispus Allen's becoming the new Spectre, and the badass Ion mini-series.

hahaha! someone got it! i think lots of people thought my name was seth lol

lol...I can't believe they killed
Marissa
, though. Apparently Seth has his own comic book store next season.

Ok Hal Jordan proves a lot of people wrong when they are counting him out. The best Green Lantern comes back takes and defeats Sinestro. He also takes on Parallax with the other group of Green Lanterns and gets revenge on what corrupted him in the first place not even the Parallax tring to make him give up but Hal Jordan's light and courage that lives off of and perseverance were just to much. After reading this mini series I am really convinced Hal Jordan is the best Green Lantern. I give it 5 out of 5 stars.

I'm meaning to dog on you GhostRider, but how much Green Lantern have you read? You just stated this was your first foray into Green Lantern.

he never stated that, he said this was the first graphic novel for a green lantern series( and yes GL rebirth is not a graphic novel).

Ah, that's another interpretation. I'm not sure, so I'll see what GR says.

I thought it was a nice read but when he hit batman I was rather pissed and not happy.

The book is hardly one of Johns best, but easily his greatest GL story to date. All in all, its one giant cop-out. And a really weak excuse to bring Sinestro back.

First, periods, use them. Second, there was nothing to ****ing fight. Hal was parallax and that whole yellow fear moster was the silliest ****ing cop-out in the history of comics.

Hey, its cool GAH, we all know you have horrible taste.

In other news, I actually enjoyed most of the mini, other than that cop-out and the Hal punching Batman scene.

I don't give a damn :) my money is still going to support the GL series. crack all the jokes you can about my taste, in the end im supporting a book i like. you cant stop that nor can anyone else can. jokes on you buddy. :)

I have a question. Why would he still be Paralax? I know he'd have to work really really hard to regain everyone's trust, but why would they lock him up?

What do you mean "be apart of"? The corps was well under reconstruction when Hal was resurected. And The Gaurdians are not what I would consider vengeful people. If they no longer felt that Jordan was a threat, they'd let him back into the corps. Not everyone would like it, but then they'd have no say since what the Gaurdians say goes within the corps.

It was the worst way to bring him back. They took away his responsibility. The best character arc he could have afterwards, trying to regain everyone's trust, was ruined.

The city that he grew up in. The city where all of his friends and family were. The city he said he would defend with his life.

GoldenAgeHero said:

He didn't help destroy a planet. He just failed to save it. And John wasn't from that planet. His friends and family didn't live there. It didn't have the same personal impact.

I really can't recall anyone facing worse personal tragedies than having almost everyone you knew and cared about getting vaporised while you were away. And, not everyone is the same. Not everyone copes with tragidy the same way. Some people just snap.

garbage i say. They should've skipped rebirth and just did recharge and with the fall out of magic during the IC maybe just maybe Hal could've came back but, not as a lantern or anything but, as a pilot or something. I think even if he was infected by the fear bug, i still wouldn't give him the most powerful weapon in the universe back. Thats just a bad call especially for beings as intelligent as the guardians. I mean damn. It would've been more interesting having him as a support character in the GL ongoing than the main GL. Just a bad call.
