...I have to say I loved every aspect of it (first graphic novel I read) except for the ending with Adrian...seriously...wth!? What a complete and utter letdown..

Just finished reading it again. I still think it won't be 99% accurately portrayed as most people want to believe. The amount of text and narrative involved is just not possible on film. You've got so much layers on top of layers in the story that I cannot see how that can be implemented into the movie. You've got the book excerpts and articles after each chapter ending that just gives you more insight into the whole character history. You've got the black kid reading the pirate comic overlapping the present day scenes.

The overall story, the way it's structured. The violence. If I was a filmmaker, I can already see how much alterations will be made. How much stuff will be cut out in order to meet the standards of Hollywood and the ratings system.

Reading the book, I feel it's not very 'audience friendly.' It's not so easily accessable to everyone. I can see this being more 'watered down' in order for the general public to get into it.

Yes, I've seen the trailers repeatedly. The more I see it and continue going back to the book, I don't think visually being faithful justifies what most fans are claiming to be 'close to the book.'

I'm pretty certain now, more then ever, that I'll skip this in the theaters.

.....I didn't know this thread was called movie rant.

LOL, exactly. No one says that it'll be 100 % faithful. The Black Freighter story is being taken out to have it's own DVD. And they are also doing something with Under the Hood as well separately. The little articles or whatever at the end that give some insight on the characters at the end of the chapters isn't necessary either. I could read everything except that and still understand the story COMPLETELY.The violence being altered? No. It'll be expanded. If you were to bother to go do some research you'll no that they went full out on the violence and just how graphic it really is. They've even kept most of the dialogue in the Mars sequence also.

IMO although Snyder has cut a number of things, he's also expanding on many too. This is probably the closest thing to being 100 % faithful to Watchmen as you'll get. Just give it a chance and stop being so narrow minded.:o Even if the damn thing fails, I'm still glad Snyder tried his best to keep it as close as he could to the book.

they can do it justice in the dvd, especially with the ability to edit in all the layers we normally got at the end of the chapters.

I just enjoyed the neutrality of it all and where they all stood with everyone and their predicament.

The best part about it is that it inspires conversations which many comics do these days (but for the wrong reason). It also doesn't judge which is nice.

I too just read it for the first time, and I wasn't really impressed. All I heard of it was it's a big deal and it'll blow you away. Not really. I'm not trying to be a jerk, if ya like it that's cool, to each his own. But I didn't see anything that great about it.
SPOILER...

I knew it was going to be Adrian who did it. The only thing I didn't predict was The Comedian being Laurie's Father. Had a nice little Darth Vader moment happening there.

It was good. I wouldn't really say it was a fun read. Just a GN I read that was hyped up way too much and did not live up to the hype for.

Still looking forward to the movie though. Even though they say it's going to be faithful, I'm sure it won't.

It's supposed to be the most faithful Moore adaption so far. We'll see. I doubt it. I mean, I heard about the faithful aspects, then Snyder's like oh but we're not going to Mars, and Blake's not wearing his gimp mask.

Yeesh.

I must say it would be better if you read up on some of the history of the time and more about america and russia's relationship during that time.

I will also say it's a piece of literature that will definitely get better in age, give it a read every couple of years and you will see it mature in you.

I've recently read it at 25 not expecting much but it blows away alot of other comics I have and a large number of other books. There's plenty there if you want it. As you grow you will probably sympathise will the whole spectrum of characters within the book.

it's a heap better than the dark knight returns which gets too much hype, what an awful read.

i totally agree...i bought it because i enjoyed the idea of an old batman...sounded clever...it was mostly a waste...the joker part was good though...

Watchmen is called the Citizen Kane of comic books because of how great and innovative it is. Another reason would be that for some people the book probably could never live up to the expectations.

Because the Gimp mask is REALLY THAT important. And Doc is going to Mars.

Yeesh. :whatever:

Letdown? Be more specific please...

true. the mask seems like simply a way to hide the scar without really needing to entirely reevaluate his costume. a means to an end without any real change

while mars is a great concept with it total baroness and similarities to earth, it isn't really required, a really high, really cold atlantic area would suffice.

Wait, he doesn't go to Mars in the movie? It certainly looks like he's there in the trailer when his magical doohicky rises from the ground (don't remember the specifics, only read Watchmen once, heh)

Anyway, can't wait for the film. Also can't wait to buy the Graphic Novel so I can read it a few more times. It's oh so incredibly awesome.

What doohicky.. artic.. wha?

by not having doc manhatten leave earth early on in the book, it makes his decision to visit the stars that lil bit grander at the end i believe.

He does got to Mars. You see it in the trailer, and all of the screening reports state he is at Mars. Snyder's comment was in response to a question about Green screen, and he said something along the lines of, "We're not going to Mars to film."

I just finished reading it for the first time as well....AND I LOVED IT. I only have one complaint and that's
Rorschach's death

He was my favorite character...and that had to happen. But It made him more of a tragic character, which I liked. I cannot wait for the movie, I'll be there at midnight to see it.

I think it completes his story arc perfectly. I can't think of any other way to end it better.

I think I'm going to re-read it and make sure I didn't miss anything...it was so complex, missing something would have been rather simple. Now I want Watchmen action figures. Like now. lol

Zodiac never came back..

Rorschach had to die. He had too big a death wish.
