Gungrave VR announced for PlayStation VR and other virtual reality devices
Published 38 mins ago. 1 comment.
2002-released shooter coming to virtual reality.

Blueside
has announced Gungrave VR, an Iggymob-developed, virtual reality-exclusive “cinematic action shooting game” based on the Red Entertainment-developed PlayStation 2 title.

It will launch first for PlayStation VR in Japan in 2017, followed later by other virtual reality devices such as Oculus and Vive.

Gungrave VR is a new title developed by optimizing the Gungrave released for PS2 in 2002 for PlayStation VR. The worldview of Gungrave will remain unchanged, and it is being developed with a story that goes beyond the sequel Gungrave: Overdose.

The game’s infinite shooting, object destruction, and “full break action” are being optimized for virtual reality. It will incorporate both the third-person perspective through the aforementioned full break action and first-person perspective through “dynamic shooting.” It promises to inherit the series’ legacy, with members of the original title’s development team joining in on development.

Thanks, 4Gamer.net.

Gungrave VR is currently available for PlayStation VR via the PlayStation Store in Japan. A western release is also planned, but has yet to be dated.

Thanks, Famitsu.

Update 04/25/18 at 12:55 a.m.: Here are a few additional details:
Gungrave VR Complete Edition will launch on August 23 in Japan. Pricing has yet to be announced.

  • “Episode 2” adds side-scrolling stages. Additionally, the amount of objects that can be destroyed at once have been increased to more than 10, and particularly in third-person mode, you can enjoy the best parts of a “Full Break” similar to the original version.
  • The game features completely new opening and ending movies. They are packed with nostalgic scenes for fans of the television anime.
  • Development is 95 percent complete.
The magazine also shares a few new tidbits about Gungrave G.O.R.E., the non-virtual reality, Unreal Engine 4-based Gungrave project currently in development for PlayStation 4. Here are the details:
  • The basic system parts have been settled, but there are still things to be concerned about.
  • The battle system may be a bit difficult to approach for users who want simple combo action. The developers want to find a common ground for future adjustments.
  • Gungrave character designer Yasuhiro Nightow has been involved from the early stages, and has started on a new character design for Grave. He is in close communications with the art director.
Thanks, Hachima Kikou.

XSEED Games and Marvelous Europe are bringing Iggymob-developed virtual reality shooter Gungrave VR to PlayStation VR on PlayStation 4 in North America and Europe both physically and digitally this fall, the companies announced.

Gungrave VR first launched in Japan in December 2017. Gungrave VR Complete Edition, which the newly announced localization is based on, is due out in Japan this summer.

Here is an overview of the game, via Marvelous:
About
Following the battle against the Orgmen—creatures transformed by the mysterious drug, SEED—Mika Asagi has tracked the manufacturing of the narcotic (along with a whole new Orgman infestation) to South City. With the city streets overrun by these newly formed creatures, Mika requests the assistance of Beyond the Grave (Grave, for short), waking him from 14 years of rest after his previous battle. She hopes for him to use his power to help rid the city streets of the Orgman threat and stop the flow of SEED once and for all.
In Gungrave VR, players take control of Grave with his iconic set of dual guns, Cerberus, and will have to master different playstyles to take down the various foes that stand in his way. Levels consist either of free-moving third-person gameplay or first-person action that includes both stationary and mobile sections, offering players a variety of modes to help put them in the shoes of the resurrected Millennion agent himself. With an array of shooting attacks, close-range strikes using Grave’s coffin, Bullet Time, and more, Gungrave VR brings an authentic Gungrave experience to virtual reality for the very first time.
Key Features

    • Multiple Perspectives to Master: Fight through intense levels that are set to either free-moving third-person mode or first-person mode (both stationary and mobile). Each perspective offers new challenges.
    • A Legendary Pedigree: Gungrave VR showcases the return of character designer Yasuhiro Nightow (Trigun), with the original Gungrave designers at Red Entertainment as advisers. Grave and Mika’s designs have been given a thorough upgrade after 14 long years!
